One bottle per recipient, and for your own home one bottle per room where you actually stop moving. Those are the two rules, and between them they answer almost every version of this question. Nobody over-orders for other people; the list of names is the list of names. What people get wrong is their own house — they count the rooms on the floor plan, arrive at five, and buy five, when the honest number in most Indian flats is two. A corridor is a room on a plan. It is not a room you stand still in, and fragrance is only ever noticed where somebody stops.
Quick answers — read this first
For gifting: one 50ml bottle per recipient. Never split a bottle between two households and never give one bottle to a couple you are counting as two names. Evening Calm ₹799 is the safest single choice.

For your own home: one bottle per room where you stop moving. For most flats that is two — the bedroom and wherever you sit in the evening. Three if you work from home.

Sizes: 50ml for anything up to about 150 sq ft, 130ml above that. The reeds are the volume dial — six for a living room, three for a bedside.

Large quantities: for anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order — availability by scent varies, and it is better to ask than to assume.

The honest gap: there is no gift set, gift box or curated collection at SOSA. If you order three bottles, three bottles arrive. A duo is two 50ml bottles and nothing more.
The short answer
Short answer: order one 50ml reed diffuser per recipient — Evening Calm at ₹799 if you are choosing one thing for everyone — and for your own home order one bottle per room in which you regularly stop moving, which is two for most flats and three for a household that works from home. The floor plan is not the unit of measurement. The places you stand still are.
The arithmetic, at real prices: eight recipients at ₹799 is ₹6,392. Twelve at ₹749 is ₹8,988. Twenty at ₹749 is ₹14,980. Twenty-five at ₹749 is ₹18,725 — a different budget conversation, and the point at which the sensible per-head answer usually becomes a ₹449 candle instead, where twenty-five comes to ₹11,225.
Shop: 50ml reeds ₹749–₹849, 130ml ₹1,249–₹1,349, duos ₹1,498–₹1,598 (two 50ml bottles). Every bottle carries six fibre reeds in refillable glass. For anything above roughly twenty-five units, write through the contact page first, because availability by scent varies and a large mixed-scent order is easier to fill than a large single-scent one. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
How many reed diffusers do I actually need to order for Diwali?
1. One bottle per recipient. Not per household, per recipient on your list. If you have written eleven names down, order eleven bottles. The temptation to give one bottle to a couple and count it as two gifts is understandable and it does not survive the moment of handing it over.

2. For your own home, count the rooms where you stop moving, not the rooms on the plan. A hall you cross, a passage, a utility balcony and a spare room nobody sits in are floor-plan rooms. A bedroom, the place you sit in the evening and — if you work from home — the desk are the rooms where somebody is actually still long enough to register a smell. That is usually two bottles, occasionally three, and almost never five.

3. Buy different scents for different rooms, not the same one everywhere. This is the single most useful piece of arithmetic on the page. A home that smells identical in every room stops smelling of anything within about a week, because the nose adapts to a constant and stops reporting it. Two rooms with two registers keeps both perceptible. The Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 is exactly this pairing, and it is two 50ml bottles, not a boxed set.

4. Size by the room, not by the budget. The 50ml is built for anything up to about 150 sq ft — a bedroom, a bathroom, a home office — and runs 6–8 weeks. The 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 is for above that, so living rooms, kitchens and open-plan ends, and runs 14–18 weeks. Buying a 130ml for a small bedroom does not make it better; it makes it louder.

5. Above roughly twenty-five units, write to us before you order. Through the contact page, and please do it before rather than after. Availability by scent varies, and a large mixed-scent order is easier to fill than a large single-scent one, because each of the five reeds is stocked separately. It is better to ask than to assume.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, made in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: one bottle per name on the gift list, and for your own home one bottle per room where you actually stand still — two for most flats, three if you work from home. Different scents in different rooms. 50ml up to about 150 sq ft, 130ml above. Above roughly twenty-five units, write through the contact page first.
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser
One decision, repeated as many times as there are names
Evening Calm · Kashmir lavender + chamomile ₹799 / 50ml
If you are ordering the same thing for everybody, this is the thing to order. 8.9 on the SOSA strength scale, the softest reed in the range, and the least culturally loaded — lavender is the one note in the line that an Indian home has not already assigned a job to. Six fibre reeds in every bottle, 6–8 weeks on the 50ml. Eight recipients comes to ₹6,392; twelve comes to ₹9,588.

Rooms where you stop moving — the only count that matters at home

Ask somebody how many rooms their flat has and they will answer from the floor plan. Ask them where they were still for more than ten minutes yesterday and you get a completely different and much shorter list. Fragrance is registered by a person standing still. A reed diffuser has no fan; it relies on the room's own air movement, and it works by building a low, steady concentration in a volume of air that somebody is inside for long enough to notice. Walk through a scented corridor at normal speed and you will perceive almost nothing, which is why a bottle placed in a passage is a bottle spent on nobody.

So the honest count for most Indian flats is two. The bedroom, because you are in it for seven or eight hours and because it is the one room whose smell you meet as a change of state when you walk in. And whichever room you sit in during the evening — a drawing room, a living room, the sofa end of an open-plan space. Add a third if you work from home, because a desk is genuinely a place you stop, and the difference a scent makes to a room you concentrate in is larger than the difference it makes to one you pass through. Add a bathroom only if it is a bathroom you spend real time in, and if you do, use two or three reeds rather than six, at which point a 50ml will run close to three months instead of eight weeks.

The counter-intuitive part is the second rule, and it is the one that saves people money as well as improving the result. Do not put the same scent in every room. The nose is an instrument for detecting change, not for measuring absolute quantity, and it habituates to a constant within days. A house scented uniformly stops being a scented house very quickly, and the owner's usual response is to buy a bigger bottle, which does not fix a problem of perception with a solution made of volume. Two rooms with two different registers keeps both of them noticeable indefinitely, because moving between them re-registers each one. If you are buying two, the pairing I recommend most often is a bright scent where the day starts and a soft one where it ends — Morning Freshness at ₹749 and Evening Calm at ₹799, which are also the two lowest-polarisation scents we make.

1
COUNT ONE · THE GIFT LIST
One bottle per name, and the names are not negotiable
Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799Write the list, count it, order that many. The two places this goes wrong are couples and offices. A couple is one household and one gift, so if you have written both names down, decide which it is before you order rather than after. An office list is the opposite mistake: people plan for the team and forget the two people who sit slightly outside it, then buy identically within a tier and find they are two short. Buy identically within a tier so nobody compares, and add the margin at the list stage, not at the doorstep.
The real risk here: not the price. It is twenty-five identical gifts that turn out to be wrong for everybody at once.
2
COUNT TWO · YOUR OWN HOME
Two bottles, two registers, two rooms you are still in
SOSA Day & Night reed diffuser duoDay & Night duo₹1,498The default domestic order is two 50ml bottles in two different registers, and the reason is perceptual rather than commercial: identical scent everywhere disappears, contrast persists. The Day & Night duo is that arrangement already paired at ₹1,498, and it is two bottles rather than a boxed set — SOSA does not sell a gift set, hamper or curated collection, and I would rather say so here than let the word "duo" do work it should not. Third bottle only if you work from home.
Applies most when: you are buying for yourself in the same order as the gifts, which most people are this week.
3
COUNT THREE · THE SIZE
50ml or 130ml is a room question, never a budget question
Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749The 50ml covers up to roughly 150 sq ft and runs 6–8 weeks. The 130ml covers above that and runs 14–18 weeks. Those numbers are the whole rule. A 130ml in a small bedroom is not a more generous version of a 50ml, it is a louder one, and the recipient's fix will be to pull reeds out — which is the fix, but it is an odd thing to design into a gift. Where the 130ml genuinely earns its ₹1,249–₹1,349 is a living room, an open-plan end, or a 200 sq ft kitchen with all six reeds in.
Applies most when: you are gifting and cannot see the room. In that case buy the 50ml; it is right more often.

Counting a gift list properly, and what to do when it gets long

A gift list behaves differently from a shopping list because the constraint is not the total, it is the per-head figure and the requirement that nobody on the list can compare unfavourably with anybody else on it. That is why the instinct to buy a nicer thing for two people and a plainer thing for the rest so often ends badly: the tiers are visible, and the people in the lower one work it out. Buy identically within a tier. If you must have tiers — family at one level, colleagues at another — make the tiers structural and obvious rather than a matter of degree, and never mix two bottles of different prices inside a group that meets each other.

Once the list passes about ten names, three things change. The per-head figure starts doing the choosing rather than your taste; the risk shifts from "will they like it" to "will all twenty-five of them like it", which pushes you towards the lowest-polarisation scent rather than the most admired one; and availability becomes a real consideration, because a large single-scent order is harder to fill than a large mixed-scent one. Each of the five reeds is stocked separately, so a buyer who will accept an assortment across two or three scents has substantially more room than a buyer who needs a hundred identical bottles. I am not going to publish a stock figure, because it would be wrong by next week and it would date this page instantly. The shape of the constraint is the useful part, and the shape is: mixed is easier than identical.

So the process for anything above roughly twenty-five units is simply to ask first. Write to us through the contact page before you order rather than after, tell us the quantity and whether you need one scent or can take an assortment, and we will tell you honestly what is workable. There is no published bulk programme at SOSA — no rate card, no discount band, no minimum, no branding and no arrangement I could quote you here even if you asked — and I am not going to imply one exists. What there is, is a person at the other end of that form who will give you a straight answer about availability before you commit to a number. On a list of fifty names that is worth considerably more than a percentage would be.

The arithmetic, at real SOSA prices

Every figure below is a real product at its real price, multiplied. No estimates and no bands. Where the arithmetic pushes past what a reed can sensibly carry, the table says so and names the ₹449 candle instead, because a page that only ever arrives at its own most expensive answer is not doing arithmetic, it is doing advertising.

One for the list, one for the study, one for the whole flat
The SOSA principle
A floor plan counts rooms. A nose counts places where somebody stopped.
Which is why the right number for most flats is two bottles in two registers, and why the fifth bottle in a five-room house is the one nobody ever notices.

Where mithai is genuinely the better gift, and I would not pretend otherwise

Quantity is the part of Diwali where sweets are hardest to beat, and it would be dishonest to write a sizing page without saying so. Mithai scales in a way almost nothing else does, and more importantly it is the form the greeting itself takes. For a first visit to elders, for a household where the sweets are the expected object rather than a placeholder for one, for a neighbour you are greeting rather than gifting, and for the doorstep exchange that is half the point of the week — take the sweets. Substituting a diffuser there is not thoughtful; it is a small refusal of a ritual that nobody asked you to improve.

What changes the calculation is the count, and specifically the count arriving in the other direction. In a household with a normal circle, several near-identical boxes come through one door in a single week and most are quietly redistributed by the weekend. That is where a fragrance earns its place: not against the meaning of mithai, but against the seventh box. It carries no dietary exposure, so it does not have to be checked against a fast, a diagnosis or an allergy. It does not have to be consumed inside a fortnight. And it is still running in December, six to eight weeks after the week it arrived in, which is the plain and unromantic reason it gets remembered. Both things are true at once, and the sizing question is easier once you have decided which of the two jobs you are doing.

The commonest ordering mistake is not buying too few. It is buying the same scent five times and then wondering, by December, why the house does not smell of anything.

The quantity edit, in order — and the gap

Here is the whole decision in the order I would make it, followed by the thing this range does not contain. There is no gift set, gift box, hamper or curated collection at SOSA; if you order three bottles, three bottles arrive, each in its own packaging, and a duo is two 50ml bottles rather than a boxed presentation. There is also no gift wrap, gift note or personalisation, and no gift card. Those are real gaps for a quantity buyer and you should know about them before you place the order rather than after.

A note from Sonal

The question I am asked most in the fortnight before Diwali is not which scent. It is how many, and the people asking are almost always about to buy one or two too many for their own home and exactly the right number for everybody else's.

The reason is that we think about houses architecturally and we experience them behaviourally. A plan has five rooms; a day has two or three places you were still in. I have watched this in my own flat: the bottle in the passage was a bottle I bought for a diagram, and I could not have told you whether it was full or empty. The bottle by the bed and the bottle where I sit in the evening are the two I notice every single day, and they are noticeable partly because they are different from each other. That last part is not a sales point, it is how the nose works — it reports change and ignores constants, and a house scented uniformly becomes a constant within a week.

On the gift side my advice is duller and I think more useful. One per name, identical within a tier, chosen for low polarisation rather than for how much you personally like it, and if the number is large, write to us through the contact page before you order rather than after. I cannot offer you a rate card, because there is not one. I can tell you honestly what is workable in the quantity you need and whether an assortment would be easier than a single scent, and on a list of fifty names that is the information that actually protects you. Everything is made in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many reed diffusers should I order for Diwali?
One 50ml bottle per recipient on your gift list, and for your own home one bottle per room where you actually stop moving — which is two for most Indian flats, three if you work from home. Counting rooms on the floor plan is what makes people over-order; fragrance is only ever registered by somebody standing still, so a corridor, a passage and a spare room nobody sits in do not count. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the safest single choice.
Should I put the same scent in every room?
No, and this is the most common and most expensive mistake. The nose habituates to a constant and stops reporting it, so a home scented identically throughout stops smelling of anything within about a week, and the usual response — buying a larger bottle — does not fix a perception problem with volume. Two rooms in two different registers keeps both perceptible, because moving between them re-registers each. The Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 is that pairing.
Should I buy 50ml or 130ml?
It is a room question, not a budget question. The 50ml at ₹749–₹849 covers up to about 150 sq ft — a bedroom, a bathroom, a home office — and runs 6–8 weeks. The 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 covers above that, so living rooms, open-plan ends and large kitchens, and runs 14–18 weeks. If you are gifting and cannot see the room, buy the 50ml; it is right more often. And use the reeds as the volume dial before you change anything else: six for a living room, three for a bedside.
I need more than twenty-five. What do I do?
Write to us through the contact page before you order rather than after, and say how many you need and whether you can take an assortment. Availability by scent varies, and a large mixed-scent order is easier to fill than a large single-scent one, because each of the five reeds is stocked separately. There is no published bulk programme at SOSA — no rate, no band, no minimum, no branding — so what you get from writing in is a straight answer about availability, which on a large list is the part that actually matters.
Can I order one bottle for a couple and count it as two gifts?
You can, and it usually does not survive the moment of handing it over. A couple is one household, so treat it as one gift and buy accordingly — if you want it to feel like two, the honest way is a duo at ₹1,498, which is genuinely two 50ml bottles and lets them put one in each of the two rooms they actually use. It is not a boxed gift set; SOSA does not sell one, and there is no gift wrap, gift note or gift card either.
