It is a tidy piece of arithmetic and it is wrong in most homes — because fragrance does not pass through a closed door. The studio flat is the one home where the sum happens to work, and it is worth understanding exactly why before you scale the logic up to anything bigger.

Why the division sum is wrong everywhere except here

The standard advice is to take your carpet area, divide by a machine's coverage rating, and buy that many. It sounds rigorous. It is the single most expensive mistake in home fragrance, because it treats a flat as though it were one continuous body of air. It is not. A closed door stops fragrance almost completely — not reduces it, stops it. Scent molecules move by diffusion and by whatever air currents exist, and a shut bedroom door removes both. This is why someone with a 1,200 sq ft flat and four diffusers can still have a bedroom that smells of nothing: they bought for area, not for rooms.

The studio is the exception that proves it. There are no internal doors, so the whole flat genuinely is one body of air, and for once the arithmetic holds — one machine rated at 300 sq ft really does cover a 350 sq ft studio. I get asked this more than any other question, and the honest answer disappoints people: you need fewer machines than you think, and you need to move the one you have. There is no commercial incentive for me to say that, which is exactly why it is worth saying.

The division sum that circulates online — area over coverage — comes from commercial scenting, where you are working with open retail floors and ducted air. Homes have doors.
