How Do I Reduce the Cardboard and Shoe-Box Smell in a Footwear Store?

By holding less board, storing it better, keeping it drier and moving it faster - in that order, and none of it involves fragrance. First, understand what you are smelling. It is not really shoes. Corrugated and folding kraft board carries the smell of its own pulping and drying; the outside of a branded box carries print inks and coatings; the box itself is glued; and inside there is tissue, sometimes a printed insert, sometimes a silica sachet. Any one box is unremarkable. What you have is several hundred, and the smell scales with the total surface area of board sitting in your building. That is why the stockroom is always worse than the shop floor and why a wall of displayed boxes changes a room. Second, damp multiplies it. Cardboard is hygroscopic - it takes up moisture from humid air - and damp board smells distinctly stronger and mustier than dry board. This is the reason a stockroom that is fine in February becomes heavy in July, and the reason the worst-smelling boxes in any store are the ones stacked directly on the floor, pressed against an external wall, or sitting under a window that sweats. So the fixes are storage fixes. Reduce the count: hold less depth on site where your supply chain allows, because every carton you are not storing is one that is not contributing. Get everything off the floor and off external walls onto racking, with room for air to move between runs rather than solid stacked blocks. Keep the room as dry as you reasonably can and ventilated - and do not add moisture to it, which is one honest reason I would not put a water-based ultrasonic diffuser in a box-heavy stockroom. Remove outer shipping cartons the day they arrive instead of flattening them into a corner where they sit for a fortnight releasing their own smell. And rotate: stock that moves does not sit long enough to become a problem, which is why a well-turning store is usually a quiet-smelling one.
