Quick answers — read this first
How do I know if a home has been over-scented? Not by smelling it after you have been there a while. Judge in the first ten seconds after arriving from outside, and treat any remark from a visitor as proof it is above the line.

Why can nobody in the house tell? Because everybody adapts to a steady olfactory background within about an hour, so the household cannot detect their own house at all, whatever the level.

What is the clearest single sign? If a guest can name the fragrance. A correctly set home reads as clean and considered without anybody being able to say why.
The short answer
Short answer: Judge in the first ten seconds from outside; any guest remark means it is above the line.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the flagship delivery gift; volume gifts from ₹299; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for your own premises.

Customer gifting that compounds - the SOSA method at a glanceStep 1 - gift the moment: delivery day, possession, checkout, milestone purchaseStep 2 - set the per-unit band: ₹299 to ₹3,999 by customer valueStep 3 - brand the gesture: your card, your story, our fragranceStep 4 - pilot small, then scale to 50, 100, 500 unitsWhatsApp the bulk desk for volume pricing
A customer gift works when it survives the drive home - sweets vanish in a day and keychains join a drawer, but a fragrance is used daily in the customer's own car or living room, replaying your brand at every use. The method: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, brand the gesture with your card, pilot and scale. This guide walks the exact play, with real SOSA options at every band.
Straight answer
How do I know if a home has been over-scented?
Not with your nose, if you have been in the house more than a few minutes. Everybody adapts to a steady background within about an hour, so the household cannot detect their own house at all - and neither can you, twenty minutes in. Use observable signs instead. One: judge only in the first ten seconds, arriving from outside air. That is the only accurate reading anybody gets, and it is why you must form the judgement before you sit down. Two: has anybody ever remarked on it? Commenting on somebody's home smelling strong is not a thing people do - so a single remark, however polite, means it is well above the line. Three: has the level been raised more than once? If yes, it has climbed, because the input to that decision is a sensation that always fades - turn it up, stop noticing, turn it up again. Four: can a guest name the register? If they can, it is too high. A correctly set home reads as clean and considered with nobody able to say why. The fix is almost never the scent - lower the output, lengthen the schedule, and move the source off the soft furnishing. Garden Bloom and other reeds from ₹749, Hotel Collection from ₹299. Quick answer: not by smelling it. Judge in the first ten seconds, and treat any remark as proof.

You cannot use your own nose. Use these instead

The instrument everybody reaches for is the one that cannot measure this. Everybody adapts to a steady olfactory background within about an hour, which means the household cannot detect their own house at all regardless of how strong it is, and a designer who has been in the building for twenty minutes has largely stopped reading it too. So the question has to be answered with observable signs rather than with a sensation. There are four, and they are reliable. The first is the arrival test, and it is the only accurate reading anybody gets. Judge the house in the first ten seconds after coming in from outside air, and form the judgement before you sit down, because after that your nose is no longer an instrument. This is also why a designer visiting a completed project should make the assessment on the doorstep rather than at the end of the visit, and why a regional manager auditing a commercial site should do it in the first minute of arrival. If it is possible to leave the building for an hour and come back, that works too - your own nose resets. The second is the remark test, and it is the most useful of the four because it requires nothing. Has anybody ever commented on the fragrance? Commenting on somebody's home smelling strong is not a thing people do - it is socially expensive, and guests will absorb a considerable amount rather than mention it. So a single remark, however polite and however positively framed, means the level is well above the line rather than slightly above it. That is why the correction rule we give clients is exactly this: leave the level alone, and adjust only if a visitor remarks on it. A remark is not feedback to be balanced against other information; it is proof. The third is the history test. Has the level been raised more than once since installation? If it has, it has climbed, and it is almost certainly too high. The mechanism is the same one that makes the first test necessary: somebody notices they can no longer smell the fragrance, turns it up, gets a week of detecting it again, stops noticing, and turns it up again. The input to the decision is a sensation that always fades, so the system only ever climbs. Asking a client whether they have adjusted it, and how many times, is a more accurate diagnostic than smelling the room. The fourth is the naming test. Can a guest name the fragrance, or describe it specifically? If they can, it is too high, whatever the register is. A correctly set home reads as clean and considered, and a visitor cannot say why - the moment somebody can identify the scent, it has become a thing in the room rather than a quality of it. There is a related version for a designer: if you can identify the register from the doorway of a home you did not specify, it is set above where it should be. There are also two physical signs worth checking, because they indicate a distribution problem rather than a level one and get misdiagnosed constantly. If a room is noticeably stronger in one area and weaker in another, the source is probably beside a large absorbent piece - a velvet sofa, heavy curtains, a wool or jute rug - which takes fragrance up while a system runs and releases it slowly, so that corner has loaded over days while the setting has not changed. Moving the source onto hard surface, in the path of general air movement and away from the largest soft piece, fixes what turning it down cannot. And if the house reads much stronger in the afternoon than in the evening, that is solar gain in a glazed room driving a convection current, or a stone floor and warm air above it moving fragrance upward - the answer is scheduling rather than a permanent reduction. When a home is over-scented, the fix is almost never the register, and changing it first makes things worse in a textile-heavy home, because the old one continues to be released by upholstery and curtains for weeks and the new one arrives layered over it. Work in order: lower the output and lengthen the schedule, so the system runs low and continuously rather than in strong bursts, because bursts read as fragrance being applied to a room while a low continuous output reads as the room simply being a certain way. Then check placement. Then check whether an unaddressed source is combining with it - drifted cooking, damp, a musty rug, a dry trap, curing materials - because fragrance does not mask those, it combines with them, and what the client is smelling may be the combination rather than the fragrance. Only after all three should the register move, and then sideways rather than dramatically: Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, or White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, are the two quietest registers we make and the usual destination. A rich or sweet original specification is the one case where the register genuinely may be at fault, because those profiles turn most reliably over long exposure, particularly in humidity. On products: the seven Hotel Collection registers are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, used in machines at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage a machine. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is waterless with no tank, coverage up to 1,000 square metres or roughly 10,700 square feet, with Bluetooth app and timer control, which is the easiest way to hold a genuinely low continuous setting; the Megh is Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank, the Sukoon Rs 1,799 and the Boond Rs 799. Reeds are Rs 749 to Rs 849, three to four months a bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. And check the consent question while you are there, because sometimes the person who finds it too strong is not the person who chose it: anybody who shares a home and cannot leave a room they did not choose the scent for should have a low neutral register and a physical off switch, not an app-only one, that they never have to justify using. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand, and we make no claim that fragrance affects mood, focus, sleep, stress or wellbeing. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against the specification on WhatsApp.

Why this works
How to tell without your nose
1 Judge only in the first ten seconds after arriving from outside 2 If anybody has ever remarked on it, it is above the line 3 If the level has been raised more than once, it has climbed 4 And if a guest can name the register, it is too high
The flagship delivery gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Per-unit gifts from ₹299; volume pricing on WhatsApp.
01
Your nose is not the instrument
Ten seconds, from outside air
The household cannot detect their own house at any level, and a designer twenty minutes into a visit has largely stopped reading it. Form the judgement on the doorstep, before sitting down.
Tip: Or leave for an hour and come back.
02
A remark is proof, not feedback
Because guests do not mention this
Commenting on somebody's home smelling strong is socially expensive, so visitors absorb a great deal rather than say anything. One polite remark means well above the line.
03
Two history questions
Has it been raised, and can they name it
More than one increase means it has climbed, because the input is a sensation that always fades. And if a guest can name the register, it is too high whatever the register is.
Tip: The fix is level and placement, almost never the scent.
The SOSA principle
Guests absorb a great deal rather than say anything. One polite remark means well above the line.
It is proof, not a data point to weigh.

Observable signs, not sensations

The instrument everybody reaches for cannot measure this: everybody adapts to a steady background within about an hour, so the household cannot detect their own house at any level, and a designer twenty minutes into a visit has largely stopped reading it. Use observable signs. The arrival test is the only accurate reading anybody gets - judge in the first ten seconds after coming in from outside, and form the judgement before sitting down, which is why an assessment should be made on the doorstep and a commercial audit in the first minute; leaving for an hour and returning also resets your nose. The remark test requires nothing: commenting on somebody's home smelling strong is socially expensive, so guests absorb a great deal rather than say anything, and a single polite remark means well above the line rather than slightly - which is why the correction rule we give clients is to adjust only on a visitor's remark, treating it as proof rather than as feedback to be weighed. The history test: has the level been raised more than once? If so it has climbed, because somebody stops detecting it, turns it up, gets a week, and turns it up again - the input is a sensation that always fades, so asking how many times it has been adjusted is more accurate than smelling the room. The naming test: if a guest can name the register it is too high, whatever the register is, because a correctly set home reads as clean and considered with nobody able to say why. Two physical signs indicate distribution rather than level: stronger in one area than another usually means the source sits beside a velvet sofa, heavy curtains or a wool rug that has loaded over days while the setting has not changed, and moving it to hard surface in general air movement fixes what turning it down cannot; and much stronger in the afternoon than the evening is solar gain in a glazed room, which wants scheduling rather than a permanent reduction. The fix is almost never the register, and changing it first makes a textile-heavy home worse, because the old one keeps being released for weeks. Work in order: lower the output and lengthen the schedule, since bursts read as fragrance applied while low continuous output reads as the room simply being a certain way; then placement; then whether an unaddressed source is combining with it. Only then move the register, sideways - Quiet Luxury or White Tea Serenity are the quietest we make. Hotel Collection from Rs 299, three to six drops per tank, never reed oil. SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999 with app and timer control for holding a low setting, SOSA Megh Rs 3,499, SOSA Sukoon Rs 1,799, SOSA Boond Rs 799, reeds from Rs 749. Check the consent question too, because the person who finds it strong may not be the one who chose it. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards. The SOSA business gifting edit

Whatever your business gifts, the logic is the same: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, keep the register gentle and crowd-safe, and brand the gesture with your card rather than your logo on the product. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so every customer gift quietly gives twice. Here is the full business range by per-unit band.

Honest notes for business gifters: customer taste varies, so volume programmes should run gentle, crowd-tested registers - fresh, clean and lightly floral scents are received well across every profile, and space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) avoid the personal-taste risk of skin perfume entirely. Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing, pilot batches, branded cards and custom hamper builds are quoted on WhatsApp - and signature-scent development for your brand is a consultation with our perfumer, not an off-the-shelf item, so timelines are discussed case by case. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. All personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant. WhatsApp bulk desk: +91 96192 18531. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.

And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a home has been over-scented?
Judge in the first ten seconds after arriving from outside, and treat any remark from a visitor as proof it is above the line. Your nose is useless after twenty minutes in the building.
Why can nobody in the house tell?
Because everybody adapts to a steady olfactory background within about an hour, so the household cannot detect their own house at all, whatever the level.
Is a polite comment from a guest significant?
Very. Commenting on somebody's home smelling strong is socially expensive, so a single remark means the level is well above the line rather than slightly above it.
What if the room is strong in one place and weak in another?
That is placement rather than level. The source is probably beside upholstery, curtains or a rug, which have loaded over days while the setting has not changed.
What should be changed first?
The output and the schedule, then the placement, then any unaddressed source. The register comes last and changing it first makes things worse. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the customer-gifting advice applies whatever your business finally buys.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer). Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing and branding are quoted on WhatsApp. The Hotel Collection and hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel or perfume house named for comparison.
