The shape of the problem
Raising a front source scales the imbalance instead of correcting it
It helps to picture the gradient rather than the average. A hanging bottle releases fragrance continuously at one location, and the cabin's own air movement carries it outward while the concentration falls away with distance. So at any given moment there is a slope through the car: highest at the mirror, high in the front seats, moderate in the second row, lowest in the third. That slope is a property of having one source in one place. Now consider what loosening the adjustable stopper does. It increases the amount being released at the top of the slope. Every position in the car goes up proportionally - which means the driver's seat, already the strongest, gains the most in absolute terms, and the third row, already the weakest, gains the least. You can double the output and still find that the back row has moved from barely noticeable to slightly noticeable while the front has moved from pleasant to too much. This is the trap almost everyone falls into, and in a closed heated winter cabin it springs faster, because there is almost no air exchange and the front of the car accumulates. The test
Get out, wait, come back in - because you cannot smell your own car
Every part of this falls apart without one habit, and it is the habit almost nobody has. You go nose-blind to an ambient smell within a few minutes of being in it. That is normal physiology and it applies to everybody, but its consequences in a car are specific and expensive: the person calibrating the fragrance is the person who cannot perceive it accurately, and the error always runs the same direction. The car stops seeming scented, so another spray goes in, or the stopper gets loosened, and over a few weeks the level climbs without anyone ever deciding to make the car stronger. Then a passenger gets in and finds it a great deal. So build the test in. After you spray, get out of the car, spend three or four minutes away from it - genuinely away, not standing by the open door - and then open a door and get in as if you had just arrived. That approximates a passenger's fresh nose about as well as anything available to you, and it will frequently tell you that one spray was enough when your instinct in the driver's seat said it was not. Better still, ask somebody. A passenger who has just got in will give you an accurate answer if you ask plainly and make it clear that too strong is a perfectly normal thing to say. And there is one signal that needs no interpretation: if anybody in the car is uncomfortable, or says a fragrance is giving them a headache, that is an instruction to reduce the dose, air the car or change the scent. A sedan holds only a few cubic metres of air, which is a fraction of any room, so under-dosing is the sensible default and one spray is usually a decision rather than a starting point. Winter changes the dose, not the scent. Closed windows and a running heater mean almost no air exchange and warmer air lifting fragrance faster off any source, so the same bottle reads considerably stronger in January than in October - tighten the stopper or use fewer sprays rather than changing what you own. Placement matters for safety before it matters for fragrance. A hanging bottle must never sit where it obstructs your view of the road; hang it so it is secure and out of your sightline, and never spray while driving or towards the windscreen. Keep any bottle from resting directly against leather, fabric or dashboard plastics. Cars are shared. A car is the smallest space any of us scents, and the one we sit closest to. Two or three cubic metres of air, a metre from your face, with the windows up and the heater on for four months of the year. I say this to customers constantly and it still surprises people: almost every car fragrance problem I am sent is a dose problem, not a scent problem. The bottle is not weak and the oil is not wrong. The cabin simply gives fragrance nowhere to go, and winter takes away the little ventilation that was rescuing you in October.
That is why we sell the hanging bottle and the spray at the same price. They are the same oil. One gives you a mild level that is always there and asks nothing of you; the other gives you a strong level the moment you decide you want one. Neither is the better product, and pricing them differently would only push people toward whichever we wanted to sell. Choose by how you drive: a long daily commute is a hanging car, a car that matters most when somebody else gets into it is a spray car, and plenty of people quite sensibly run both.

Where exactly should I aim the spray in an SUV?
Low, into the air of the rear footwells, with a rear door open and nobody in the car. Not at the seats, not at the headlining, and never directly onto leather, upholstery or dashboard plastics - that is SOSA's own instruction and it is also how you avoid marking a surface. The reason low and into the air works is that the cabin's own circulation lifts fragrance from the footwell area through the rear rows, whereas anything sprayed onto a surface stays a strong local patch rather than becoming an ambient level. If you have a third row, one spray into the second-row footwell and, if you genuinely need it, a second into the boot-side footwell, is a more even result than two sprays in the same place. Then close up and leave it 15 to 30 minutes before anyone gets in.
Can I just hang two bottles instead, one at the front and one at the back?
You can, and it is a legitimate approach to the same geometry problem - two point sources spread through a long cabin rather than one. The constraints are practical. The front one must be small, secure and completely clear of the driver's view of the road, which is not negotiable, and neither bottle should rest against leather, fabric or dashboard plastics. The second one needs somewhere it can hang free and safe in a moving car. Run the same scent in both, because two different registers in one cabin collide rather than layer, and set both lower than you would set a single bottle, since you now have two sources accumulating in a closed heated cabin. Why does spraying just before people arrive feel so obvious?
Because they are meeting the peak. A spray releases its whole dose in an instant, and the concentration in the air is at its highest in the first minute or two, after which it distributes through the cabin and settles to a much lower steady level. If the door opens during that first phase, what a passenger walks into is a cloud, and human noses are extremely good at recognising the difference between a space that smells of something and a space where something has just been sprayed. Fifteen to thirty minutes is enough for it to settle in a closed cabin, and cracking the windows for the first minute takes the sharpest edge off. It is entirely a timing problem rather than a dose problem, which is why using fewer sprays at the wrong moment does not fix it.
Does the third row of an SUV ever really smell of the fragrance?
Yes, but not from a single bottle at the mirror, and we would rather say that plainly than promise even coverage that no hanging format can deliver. What reaches the third row reliably is fragrance placed near the third row - a spray into the rear footwells before a journey, or a device positioned back there. What reaches it from the mirror is whatever the cabin's circulation carries two and a half metres against a falling concentration gradient, which in practice is a trace. If the third row is regularly occupied and you want it to smell of something, treat it as its own zone: one spray before people get in, or the SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 sitting in a rear cup holder on a one, two or three hour timer. Do not try to buy it with a looser stopper at the front.
Should I run the fan to spread the fragrance through the car?
Air movement genuinely does distribute fragrance more evenly, and if the fan is already running there is no reason not to let it help. What we will not tell you to do is manipulate the ventilation for fragrance reasons in the other direction - never set the car to recirculate, or keep the windows shut, in order to make a scent last longer or feel stronger. Fresh air in a car with people in it is not a setting to economise on, and that holds all year. The winter version of this matters too: with the windows closed and the heater running there is already almost no air exchange, so the same setup reads considerably stronger in January than in October, and the correct response is to tighten the stopper or use one spray fewer rather than to look for ways to hold more fragrance in.
