This is a fair question, because the internet oversells these machines badly. So let me answer it as the perfumer who makes them, not as a salesperson. Yes, ultrasonic diffusers work - they really do scent a room and add humidity. But they do not do half the magical things you have been told, and I would rather you knew exactly what you are buying.
Quick answers — read this first
Do ultrasonic diffusers actually work? Yes. They vibrate a plate thousands of times a second to atomise water into a fine, cool mist that carries scent through the room and adds a little humidity. That part is real and it works well.

Do they purify the air? No. A diffuser scents and lightly humidifies a room. It does not clean, purify or disinfect the air. Scent is not air purification, and I will not pretend otherwise.

What do I put in one? Clean, room-temperature water and a few drops of SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Not raw essential oils - they are too thick and can clog the misting plate.
The short answer
The honest yes: they atomise water into a cool mist that carries scent and adds humidity - a real, useful effect that works.
The honest no: they do NOT purify or disinfect air. A diffuser scents a room; it does not clean it.
How to run one: clean, room-temperature water plus a few drops of SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Cool mist, no heat.
Where to start: the Boond (₹799) for a desk or the Sukoon (₹1799) for a bedroom.
Why water-based fragrance, not raw oils (illustrative)SOSA water-based fragrance — mists cleanly, made for the plateRaw essential / carrier oils — thick, can clog & damage the unit
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Straight answer
Do ultrasonic diffusers actually work?
Yes, they work - they atomise water into a fine, cool mist that carries scent through a room and adds a little humidity, and that effect is real and reliable. Inside is a small ceramic plate that vibrates at ultrasonic frequency, thousands of times a second, shaking the water surface into a micro-mist that rises and disperses. A few drops of water-based fragrance ride along on it, so the whole room smells lovely within minutes. Where I have to be honest is the limit: a diffuser scents and humidifies, but it does not purify, disinfect or clean the air. If you want scent and a touch of comfort in dry air, yes, it works beautifully. If you want an air purifier, that is a different machine.
Short version: yes, they scent a room and add humidity - that part works. No, they do not purify air.

How they actually work

Let me open the machine up, so to speak, because once you understand the mechanism the honest yes makes sense.

What "ultrasonic" means here
A tiny ceramic disc sits under the water and vibrates at a frequency above what we can hear - around 2.4 MHz in the SOSA Sukoon. Those vibrations shake the surface of the water into a fine, cool fog of micro-droplets. There is no heat and no boiling; the mist is at room temperature.

Because the mist is mostly water, it does two useful things at once. It carries the scent you have added, spreading it evenly through the room rather than letting it sit in one corner. And it releases a little moisture into the air, which is the humidifying effect - a real bonus in an air-conditioned or winter-dry Indian room.

This is why I always say pour water first and add a few drops of fragrance second. The water is the vehicle. A few drops of SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection is all the scent it needs, because the mist does the work of spreading it.
Cool mist, no heating element. There is no hot water, no steam and no burn risk - the plate vibrates the water rather than boiling it.
Even, room-filling scent. The mist distributes fragrance far better than a jar sitting on a shelf, which is the whole point of an active diffuser.
A little added humidity. Useful comfort in dry AC or winter air, which is why our units double as small humidifiers.

What they do not do

Here is where I part ways with the marketing you may have read. An ultrasonic diffuser is lovely at scent and humidity - and nothing beyond that.

The myth: "An ultrasonic diffuser cleans and purifies your air."
The reality: it does not. It disperses a fine mist of water carrying fragrance. It does not filter dust, remove pollutants, kill germs or treat any condition. Scent is not air purification. For clean air you need an air purifier, which is a different appliance entirely.

I also want to be plain that a diffuser is not aromatherapy medicine. It can make a room feel calmer and smell wonderful, and that is worth a great deal - but it does not treat, cure or prevent anything. I make fragrance, not medicine, and I keep that line clear.

What it does What it does not do
Scents a room evenly Purify or clean the air
Adds a little humidity Filter dust or allergens
Sets a calm ambience Treat or cure any condition

One rule keeps a diffuser working well for years: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the ultrasonic misting plate and damage the unit. Use clean, room-temperature water - filtered or RO in hard-water cities - and never hot water.

They work exactly as far as physics allows and not one inch further. Scent and humidity, yes. Clean air, no. That honesty is the most useful thing I can give you.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Do ultrasonic diffusers really work, or is it hype?
The core function is real - they atomise water into a cool mist that carries scent and adds humidity, and that works reliably. The hype is the extra claims about purifying air, which they do not do.
Will I actually smell the fragrance across the room?
Yes. The mist spreads scent far more evenly than a passive jar. A few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance in the tank scents a whole room within minutes.
Does it clean or purify the air?
No. It scents and lightly humidifies. It does not filter, clean, purify or disinfect the air. For that you need an air purifier.
Can I use my own essential oils to make it work better?
Please do not. Raw essential oils are thick and can clog the misting plate. Use SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, which is made to mist cleanly.
Which SOSA diffuser should I start with?
Boond (₹799) for a desk, Sukoon (₹1799) for a bedroom with remote and timers, or Megh (₹3499, 6L) for a large room. Each ships with three water-based fragrances.
