Placement, dose and schedule
Placement first, because it costs nothing. The living-area machine wants to be about a metre off the floor — a console, a sideboard, a shelf — at the far end from the hob, with a foot of clear space around it so the mist disperses rather than condensing on a wall. Keep it out of the direct line of a ceiling fan or a split AC: moving air does not distribute fragrance evenly, it pushes it against one surface and holds it there. The rule specific to a one-bedroom flat is the doorway one — keep that machine at least six feet from the bedroom door, or every time the door opens you push a concentrated stream into a room that has its own machine and its own, lighter dose. The 16 to 18 hour runtime describes what a 500ml tank can do, not what a room wants. Start the bedroom machine about forty-five minutes before you get into bed and let it stop rather than running it all night. On cooking nights, sequence instead of competing: extractor on, window open, diffuser afterwards — no machine beats an active tadka. Use filtered water in hard-water cities, rinse the tank between scents, and never substitute raw essential or carrier oils.

I have had long correspondence with people about square footage and coverage ratings that could have been settled by asking whether their bedroom door is shut at night.
