The logic here is exactly the same as it is for furniture, so I will give you the same honest answer. A diffuser can affect a wall only if you point its mist straight at that wall for hours on end - because then you are gently, repeatedly wetting one patch of paint. Placed sensibly, it will not touch your walls. Let me show you where the line is.
Quick answers — read this first
Can an ultrasonic diffuser damage walls? Only if you aim the mist directly at a wall for long periods. Constantly dampening one patch of paint can, over time, mark it or leave mineral dust. Placed centrally with the mist into open air, it will not.

Why would it mark the paint? Persistent moisture on one spot, plus hard-water minerals drying as dust. Both come from placement and water quality, not from the fragrance.

How do I avoid it? Place the diffuser away from walls - ideally central - aim the mist into the room, use filtered or RO water, and keep the mist moderate rather than blasting.
The short answer
The honest answer: only if the mist is aimed straight at a wall for hours - that can dampen paint or leave dust. Placed well, no.
The cause: persistent moisture on one patch plus hard-water minerals. Not the fragrance.
Prevent it: place centrally, not against a wall; aim the mist into open air; use filtered/RO water; keep the mist moderate.
Fragrance rule: SOSA water-based Hotel Collection only - it mists cleanly. Raw oils can leave a film and clog the plate.
Why water-based fragrance, not raw oils (illustrative)SOSA water-based fragrance — mists cleanly, made for the plateRaw essential / carrier oils — thick, can clog & damage the unit
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Straight answer
Can ultrasonic diffusers damage walls?
Honestly, they can only mark a wall if you set them up to do it - by aiming the mist directly at that wall, close up, for hours at a time. The mist is water carrying a little fragrance, and if the same patch of paint is dampened continuously, over weeks that persistent moisture can affect the finish, and hard-water minerals can dry into a faint dusty film. Place the diffuser sensibly and none of that happens. Keep it away from walls - ideally somewhere central like a console or table - aim the mist outlet into the open room rather than at a surface, use filtered or RO water, and keep the mist on a moderate setting rather than the maximum. Do that and your walls are completely unaffected.
Short version: only mist aimed at a wall for hours risks it. Place it centrally, aim into open air, use filtered water - and walls are fine.

Where the wall risk comes from

As with furniture, the honest culprit is not the scent - it is moisture and minerals landing repeatedly on one spot. Let me name the two ways that happens.

Concentrated moisture on paint
Point a mist outlet at a wall a few centimetres away and that patch of paint never fully dries. Sustained over weeks, persistent damp can soften or mark some paint finishes, particularly cheaper emulsion. It is the same principle as any wall that stays wet.
Mineral dust film
Hard tap water leaves minerals behind as the mist dries. Aimed at a wall, that can build into a faint dusty film on the paint over time. Filtered or RO water largely removes this cause.
The myth: "Diffuser fragrance discolours or damages wall paint."
The reality: the fragrance is a few water-based drops. The wall risk is concentrated moisture and hard-water minerals hitting one spot - both fixed by placement and filtered water. Raw oils would risk a film; use SOSA's water-based fragrance only.

Placement that keeps walls safe

The whole fix is where you stand it and how you aim it. These are the habits I would follow.

Place it centrally, not against a wall. A console, table or shelf with open space around it lets the mist disperse into the air rather than onto plaster.
Aim the mist into open space. Point the outlet up and out towards the middle of the room, never a few centimetres from a wall.
Use filtered or RO water. This removes most of the mineral dust that could ever settle on a wall in a hard-water city.
Keep the mist moderate. You do not need the maximum setting to scent a room. A moderate mist disperses fully into the air and reaches no surface wet.
Think of it this way: a diffuser is meant to add scent and a whisper of humidity to the whole room's air. If mist is visibly landing on a wall, it is set too high or placed too close - move it out and turn it down, and it does its job better anyway.
Risky setup Safe setup
Outlet aimed at a wall, close up Central placement, mist into open air
Maximum mist, hard tap water Moderate mist, filtered water

The standing tank rule applies to walls too: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, which disperses cleanly. Raw essential oils and carrier oils are thick, can leave residue and can clog the plate. Use clean, room-temperature water - filtered or RO in hard-water cities - and never hot water.

A wall only gets damp if you insist on misting it. Place the diffuser to scent the air, not a surface, and paint is never part of the conversation.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Will a diffuser stain or mark my wall paint?
Only if you aim the mist directly at a wall for long periods. Placed centrally with the mist into open air and filtered water in the tank, it will not affect your walls at all.
How far from a wall should I keep a diffuser?
Give it clear open space - ideally place it centrally on a table or console rather than tucked against a wall, and point the mist into the room, not at plaster.
Is the fragrance what damages the wall?
No. The fragrance is a few water-based drops. Any wall risk is concentrated moisture and hard-water minerals on one spot, both prevented by placement and filtered water.
Does mist setting matter for walls?
Yes. A blasting maximum mist close to a surface is the risky combination. A moderate mist placed in open space disperses fully into the air and reaches no wall wet.
What water protects my walls best?
Filtered or RO water, especially in hard-water cities. It leaves far fewer minerals, so there is little to settle on any nearby surface.
