Let me be precise about the mechanism, because vague fear is not useful. Two things, both avoidable, are behind any furniture marks people report.
Settled moisture
If a diffuser over-mists and the plume lands on the same patch of wood hour after hour, that spot stays slightly damp. Over time, persistent damp can dull a varnish or mark an unsealed surface. It is the same as leaving a wet glass on wood - moisture, not fragrance.
White dust
Hard tap water carries dissolved minerals. When the mist dries, those minerals are left behind as a fine white powder that can settle on nearby surfaces. It looks alarming but wipes off, and it comes from the water, not the scent.

How to prevent it completely
None of this needs to happen. A few habits make a diffuser completely furniture-safe, and I follow them myself.
Stand it on a tray or coaster. A small ceramic or glass tray catches any settled moisture or dust and protects the surface underneath entirely.
Keep it 30-50 cm from surfaces. Give the mist room to disperse into the air before it can reach wood. Do not tuck the outlet right against a wall or shelf.
Aim into open space. Point the mist outlet towards the middle of the room, not down at a table or up under a shelf.
Use filtered or RO water. In hard-water cities this all but eliminates the white dust, because there are far fewer minerals to leave behind.
Wipe spills and empty between uses. If water splashes when you fill it, wipe it. Empty and dry the tank between sessions so nothing sits.
My own setup: the diffuser sits on a small tray in the centre of a console, mist pointing up and out, filled with RO water. In months of daily use there is nothing to wipe - because the mist disperses into the air, which is exactly what it is meant to do.
