Why is perfume bad for a diffuser? Two reasons. Its oily or alcohol-and-solvent base is not made to be atomised from water, so residue can build up on the plate, and the scent is tuned for skin, not for filling a room from a mist.

Why perfume damages the machine
It helps to understand what a perfume actually is, because that is exactly why it is wrong for a water-based diffuser.
When you put that into an ultrasonic diffuser, the oily or solvent-heavy base does not blend into the water and atomise cleanly. Instead it tends to coat the plate, and over time that film can clog it and damage the machine, the same failure raw essential oils cause.
The claim: "It is just fragrance, so it should work in any diffuser." It is fragrance in the wrong carrier for this machine. The diffuser does not care how nice the perfume smells; it cares whether what you poured in will atomise from water without leaving a film. Perfume will not, and the plate pays for it.
My honest view as a perfumer: I would never decant one of my own attars or sprays into a diffuser. They are made for skin. It would waste the perfume and risk the machine.
