Scheduling reads as an abstract feature until you sit down with a household’s actual week, at which point it becomes a series of small, concrete decisions. Take an ordinary large residence: a family that leaves in the morning, returns in the evening, is at home properly at weekends, and travels for a fortnight twice a year. The person who has just walked in is a better instrument than the person who installed it.
One practical caution about how many windows a day you plan for. Intensity is the second dial, and it is the first one to move
Once the hours are right, the intensity is the only remaining adjustment, and it is the one most often set wrongly and in the same direction. Almost nobody under-doses a scented interior. Everybody over-doses one, and the mechanism is not carelessness but physiology: the person doing the setting has been in the room for twenty minutes, their receptors have already adapted to whatever is in the air, and so the level that reads as correct to them is the level that reads as too much to the next person through the door. You are supposed to notice a scented room on arrival and at transitions, not continuously. A fragrance you can smell every minute of an evening is set too strong for the volume, and the fix costs nothing.
So the commissioning rule is to begin at the lowest useful setting and move up only if a genuinely fresh nose reports nothing. Set it, leave for a quarter of an hour, walk back in through the front door at normal pace and make the judgement in the first three seconds. If the household includes someone who arrives home later, ask them the next day before touching anything. And then key-lock it. The key-lock is not a security feature so much as a stability feature: a setting that anybody can nudge will be nudged upward over a fortnight by people who have stopped smelling it, and a locked machine is how a considered level survives contact with the people who live or work around it.
Ceiling height belongs in this decision as well, because intensity is being spent into a volume rather than across a floor.
