A reed diffuser is beautifully low-tech. No flame, no electricity, no batteries. The scented oil sits in the bottle; the reeds — typically made from rattan or a porous fibre — draw that oil upward through millions of microscopic internal channels by capillary action. Think of a rattan reed under a microscope: it looks like a bundle of tiny hollow straws. The oil climbs those channels, reaches the exposed tips, and then evaporates slowly into the surrounding air. Temperature matters. A warmer room speeds evaporation, which means a stronger throw but faster oil use. An air-conditioned room running at 20°C will slow evaporation considerably — your diffuser will last longer but you may want to use more reeds or flip them more often to compensate. This is different from a car fragrance, where a sealed cabin can hit 45-70°C and volatility is a very different challenge. At home, the variables are gentler but still worth understanding.

Always flip the reeds over a paper towel or cloth, and wipe any drips from the bottle neck promptly. Put the bottle on a ceramic dish or a small tray.

Keep it out of reach. Children and pets should not have access to the diffuser or the oil. Cats in particular may be sensitive to some aromatic compounds — place the diffuser on a high shelf they cannot reach, and if your pet has any known respiratory sensitivities, consult your vet before running any home diffuser.
