Founder Diaries · The SOSA Gift Guides
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles9 min readUpdated August 2026
Retail fragrance is usually discussed as something done to customers. The people actually living in it are the staff, who are on that floor for nine hours and cannot step outside when it becomes too much.
Quick answers — read this first
How should a showroom be scented? At a level set for the staff rather than for customers. Staff stand in the space for nine hours and cannot leave, while customers experience it for a few minutes, so a level comfortable for staff will be more than enough for a visitor arriving with an unadapted nose.
Does scenting a store increase sales? SOSA makes no claims about footfall, dwell time, conversion, sales or achieved price. What scenting does is present a clean, well-kept space consistently. Any claim beyond that is not one we will make.
Which parts of a store should not be scented? Stock rooms, staff rooms and back offices, which are working areas belonging to the people who use them. Fitting rooms should be kept very low, since customers are enclosed there with no ventilation and no way to leave quickly.
The short answer
Short answer: Set the level for staff, who are there nine hours, not customers, who are there nine minutes. No footfall, dwell or conversion claims.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the signature gift; attars from ₹379; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for milestone gifts.

A fragrance gift works because it is used daily and noticed daily - in the car, in the living room, on the wrist. The method is simple: let the relationship set the category, let their lifestyle set the product, let the budget set the size. This guide walks the exact decision for this occasion, with real SOSA options at every price.
At a level set for the staff, not the customers. This is the inversion that most retail scenting advice misses. A customer experiences the space for nine minutes and arrives with an unadapted nose, so they perceive whatever is there clearly and at full strength. Staff are on that floor for nine hours, adapt within the first, and cannot step outside when it becomes too much. Set the level for the person who is comfortable at hour seven and it will still be entirely sufficient for somebody walking in, because the arriving nose is far more sensitive than the resident one. Getting this backwards produces stores that visitors find heavy and staff quietly resent. Placement follows the same logic. The entrance and main floor are appropriate. Stock rooms, staff rooms and back offices get nothing imposed, because they are working areas belonging to the people who use them. Fitting rooms should be very low or nothing, since a customer is enclosed there with poor ventilation. Capacity is the practical question: the SOSA Megh at ₹3,499 with a 6L tank for a single-room store, or the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a large showroom - waterless with no tank to fill, up to 1,000 m², with timer control so it runs during trading hours only. Reeds from ₹749 suit a small boutique or a consultation room. What we will not claim: any effect on footfall, dwell time, conversion, achieved price or sales. Volume pricing is quoted against the specification on WhatsApp. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Quick answer: set it for the staff, not the customer. Nothing in stock rooms or staff rooms. Megh Rs 3,499, Vaayu Rs 11,999.
The gift most readers of this guide choose: the SOSA Safar - rechargeable waterless car and travel diffuser, three hotel-inspired scents in the box, used every single day - at ₹3,999. Smaller gestures from ₹299; attars from ₹379. Or WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 and we will pick with you.

The people who cannot leave the floor work there
Almost everything written about scenting retail is written from the customer's side, which is understandable and produces a consistent error. The customer is a visitor. They arrive with a nose that has been outside, they are in the space for a few minutes, and they perceive whatever is there vividly because it is new to them. That vividness is exactly why owners tend to over-dose: standing in their own store, adapted, they cannot smell what they have set, so they raise it, and the person who arrives an hour later walks into something considerably stronger than intended. The people who actually live in a retail fragrance are the staff. They are on the floor for eight or nine hours, they adapt within the first, and they have no ability to leave when it becomes uncomfortable. That combination - continuous exposure and no exit - is the same situation that makes shared-home fragrance a consent question, and it applies with more force here because it is somebody's job. The practical rule that follows is simple and slightly counter-intuitive: set the level for staff comfort and it will still be more than sufficient for customers. An unadapted nose is dramatically more sensitive than an adapted one, so a level that is unobtrusive at hour seven of a shift will be clearly perceptible to somebody who has just come through the door. There is no need to choose between the two audiences, provided you set it in the right order. Placement is where the boundaries get drawn. The entrance and the main floor are appropriate and are where the value is: an entrance is the one part of the visit every customer experiences identically. Stock rooms, staff rooms and back offices are not appropriate. They are working areas that belong to the people using them, and imposing a register there is the retail equivalent of scenting somebody's desk. Fitting rooms deserve a specific mention: they are small, enclosed, poorly ventilated, and occupied by a customer who is already in a slightly vulnerable position, so the correct setting there is very low or nothing. And a store with a food counter should not be scented near it, for the same reason a dining room is not scented: taste is largely smell, and the food should win. Two more practical points. Textiles absorb, so a store full of soft stock - a clothing boutique, a furnishing showroom - will absorb noticeably more than a hard-surfaced one, which is a capacity question rather than a dose question. And consistency is worth more than intensity: a store that smells the same on a Tuesday morning and a Saturday evening reads as well-run, while one that is strong some days and absent others reads as careless, which is an argument for timer-controlled machines and scheduled refills rather than somebody topping something up when they remember. Finally, the claim we do not make. Retail scenting is frequently sold on footfall, dwell time, conversion and basket size. SOSA makes no claims about any of those, nor about achieved price or sales. What a properly specified system does is present a clean, well-kept space consistently to everybody who enters it. That is a real benefit and it is the only one we will state.
Why this works
The retail rules
The signature gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Gifts from ₹299.
An unadapted nose is far more sensitive than an adapted one, so a level that is unobtrusive at hour seven of a shift is still clearly perceptible to somebody walking in. Setting it the other way round produces heavy stores and quietly resentful teams.
Tip: The owner, standing in it, is adapted too.
02
Working areas are not yours to scent
Stock rooms, staff rooms, back offices
These belong to the people who use them, and imposing a register there is the retail equivalent of scenting somebody's desk. Fitting rooms should be very low or nothing, being small, enclosed and occupied by somebody who cannot leave quickly.
03
Consistency beats intensity
The same on Tuesday morning and Saturday evening
A store that smells the same every day reads as well-run. One that is strong some days and absent others reads as careless. That argues for timer-controlled machines and scheduled refills rather than somebody topping up when they remember.
Tip: No footfall, dwell or conversion claims. Ever.
The SOSA principle
The customer is in it for nine minutes. The staff are in it for nine hours and cannot go outside. Set it for them.
Entrance and floor yes. Stock rooms and staff rooms never.

The SOSA retail set. Single-room store: the SOSA Megh at Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank. Small boutique or consultation room: reed diffusers from Rs 749 through to Rs 849, silent and unattended, three to four months per bottle. Small spaces: the SOSA Boond at Rs 799. Honest notes for gift-givers: fragrance taste is personal, so when you do not know theirs, fresh, clean and gentle scents are received well far more reliably than bold ones - and a trio or a diffuser (where the scent perfumes a space, not their skin) is the safest format of all. A fragrance gift is a gesture, not a message about how anyone smells; give it with that lightness. All SOSA personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant - kind to skin and appropriate to gift across ages. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. WhatsApp gift help: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
I have watched hundreds of people choose gifts on our store, and the pattern never changes: the wallet, the watch and the chocolates get bought in five minutes and forgotten in a week. The fragrance gift takes fifteen minutes to choose - because you have to think about the person - and that thinking is exactly what the receiver feels when they open it. A fragrance gift is proof you considered them. That is the entire secret.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - alcohol-free attars that layer on skin without stinging, car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon. When you gift SOSA you are not gifting a logo; you are gifting something they will use every day and associate with you. If you are stuck between two options, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me who it is for and I will help you choose. I answer the gifting questions myself; they are my favourite kind.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains association with the giver in a way single-use gifts do not; gift-research consistently finds receivers value thoughtfulness and usefulness over price. Fragrance preference is personal: when the receiver's taste is unknown, gentle fresh and floral profiles are the reliably safe choice, and multi-scent sets or room fragrance formats reduce the risk further. SOSA range: car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; Beast solid perfume Rs 549; perfumes Tabac Noir, Zaffran, Samundar and Bahaar from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
