The air in a shared home is not yours to decide

Remote work is usually described as an individual arrangement, and in Indian homes it very rarely is. The person working from home is almost always doing so inside a household that is also doing other things: a parent watching television at two in the afternoon, a partner on a different shift trying to sleep, a flatmate on their own calls, children back from school at four, and household staff who spend hours in the same rooms. All of them share the air. None of them was asked. Most of them cannot simply go somewhere else for eight hours. That combination is what makes home fragrance a different subject in a shared home than in a home somebody occupies alone, and it is a subject where the polite answer and the correct answer happen to be the same. Start with scale. A machine sized to fill a flat will fill a flat, which means one person's choice becomes seven rooms of everybody's experience. There is very little reason for this. The person working needs the corner they are sitting in to be pleasant, and treating one corner is cheaper, less contentious and, because of adaptation, indistinguishable to them from treating the whole house. Small formats are therefore not a compromise here; they are the correct specification. Then register. Then the switch. Anybody who shares the space should be able to turn it off without explaining themselves, without asking, and without it becoming a conversation. If the off switch is inconvenient or the machine is the working person's prized possession, that condition is not met, and the fragrance has become something people put up with. Two absolutes close this out. Children's rooms, nurseries, creches and play areas get no fragrance, and that is not a dose question. And the kitchen is never the place to add fragrance: cooking smell is aerosolised oil that travels and settles on soft furnishings in other rooms, so the honest fix is extraction, ventilation and cleaning the surfaces it has landed on. Fragrance layered over it gives you both smells at once, which is worse than either.
