A let should smell of nothing, and then very slightly of something

Short-let hosting attracts a lot of fragrance advice and most of it is borrowed from hotels without noticing that the two situations differ in one decisive way. A hotel lobby is a space people pass through, so a distinctive register there is experienced briefly and by choice, in the sense that nobody is required to stay in it. A short let is somebody's home for four nights. They sleep in it, eat in it, work in it and cannot go anywhere else, and if they dislike the smell there is no remedy available to them beyond opening a window and hoping. That asymmetry should govern everything. Start with the order of operations, because it is where most hosts go wrong and it costs nothing to correct. Fragrance is a finishing touch on a clean property, never a substitute for one. A flat that has been shut for ten days develops a specific closed smell, and it has identifiable causes: still air, soft furnishings holding whatever was last cooked, damp in a bathroom that never fully dried, and dry drain traps, which are the most overlooked of the four. A trap that has evaporated stops sealing the drain and lets sewer air into the room, and no fragrance in existence will cover that convincingly. The fixes are unglamorous and effective: open two openings rather than one so air actually crosses the flat, launder or air the soft furnishings, deal with the bathroom, and pour a mug of water down every drain including the ones nobody uses. Do that first, and the property is already most of the way there. Then, and only then, add a small amount of fragrance. The register should be plain. Something clean and green or a light woody note reads as a well-kept property; something sweet, heavy or distinctive reads as a host's personal taste imposed on a stranger, and it also tends to be the thing a guest mentions when they mention anything. Dose low. Adaptation means the host, who visits between stays, is the worst possible judge of level, since they arrive with a fresh nose and calibrate for the first thirty seconds rather than for four days. Placement should favour the entrance and living areas, and bedrooms should get the least or nothing at all, because a person sleeping for eight hours has the least ability to escape and the least reason to want a fragrance they did not select. Format matters for a practical reason too. A short let is a property operated remotely and used by people who did not buy anything in it, so anything with a switch will be switched, anything with a tank will be run dry, and anything breakable will eventually break. Reeds have no switch, no power and no tank, hold a fixed low output, and run three to four months, which is why they are the right specification here even before considering how they smell. Two firm exclusions. Do not leave candles for guests to use: open flame in a property you are not present in, used by people unfamiliar with the space, is a risk no host should accept, and it should be kept well away from curtains, paper and anything flammable in any case.
