Why is this position tricky? Because you have professional information only, and you are in a room full of family and old friends who have known her for decades. A gift needing personal knowledge will show that you lack it.
How much should a colleague spend? Usually Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 individually, or Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 pooled. Going far above the table is uncomfortable for everybody, including her.
You know her job, not her house
It is worth naming the actual situation, because it is genuinely different from every other shower guest's. You are a colleague. You know her competently and pleasantly for about nine hours a week in a professional setting. You probably do not know what her flat looks like, what she does at weekends, what she wears outside an office, whether she cooks, whether she has a car, or what her taste in anything personal is. And you will be standing in her living room, among her mother, her sisters, her cousins and friends she has had since school, while your parcel is opened in front of all of them. That combination - lowest information, full visibility - is what makes this gift feel harder than it should. The solution is not to try to close the information gap. It is to choose from the category of gift that does not require the information in the first place. Some gifts need to know a person: anything worn on the body, anything that reflects a taste, anything referencing a habit. Some gifts need to know a home: anything that occupies a permanent place, anything that has to match something. And some gifts need neither, because they are addressed to a space in a completely generic way, and those are the ones that belong in your hands. Three rules follow from the position. First, nothing on her body. A personal fragrance is a lovely gift in the right relationship, and this is not that relationship, and a living room full of her family is not the room for it. Second, nothing that comments on her physical state - no foot soaks, no products for tired legs, nothing referencing how she looks or feels. Kindly meant, and it is a public observation made by somebody from her office. Third, nothing that needs explaining. A gift table moves at roughly ninety seconds a parcel, and if yours requires a sentence about why you chose it, you will be delivering that sentence to twenty strangers. So, what works. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is the most reliable colleague gift in existence, and its reliability comes from being completely legible. Everybody understands a candle on sight, it is obviously well made, it opens nicely in a room, and it is addressed to a house without assuming anything about that house. It is also consumed rather than placed, which quietly matters - her flat is losing free surface weekly to a cot, a pram in the hall and thirty parcels from that very afternoon, and a gift that takes a surface temporarily and then gives it back is doing her a favour she will never consciously notice. Lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours. Misty Mornings is Nilgiri orchid and sun-ripened nectarine, Bookshop is cedarwood, sage and lemon, Evening Walks is frankincense and tonka, Cozy Corner is spiced pear and golden honey. If you happen to know the household would rather not have a flame, wax melts at four hundred and seventy-four rupees are the flame-free version and need a ceramic burner, five hundred and sixty-nine if they do not have one. A hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees is the other strong individual choice and has one advantage nothing else here has: it is useful immediately rather than eventually. There is a great deal of driving to appointments in these months, and afterwards the car becomes one of the very few places either parent is ever alone. It requires no taste, occupies no house space at all, and is about as neutral an object as exists. Jasmine is four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint four hundred and eighty-nine, Lemon four hundred and ninety-nine, Vetiver, Sea Breeze and Oud five hundred and nine. It also belongs to whoever drives, which quietly includes her husband - a man who at a baby shower typically receives nothing whatsoever and spends the afternoon at the edge of the room. Nobody else will have thought of that. If several of you are going in together, which is common and sensible, the amount goes up and the temptation is to buy more items. Resist it: a hamper of five small things reads as a budget being spent rather than a decision being made, and at a gift table that difference is visible. One good object is better. A reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees is the correct shape for a pooled colleague gift - substantial, obviously for the home, no upkeep at all, and it runs for two or three months. Morning Freshness is seven hundred and forty-nine, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm seven hundred and ninety-nine, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew eight hundred and forty-nine. It uses its own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action, and it belongs at an entrance or in a living room. Not a nursery. To be plain: SOSA makes no products for babies or children, and nothing in this range is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a baby's belongings. A word on amount, since it causes more anxiety than it should. Individually, five hundred to a thousand rupees is comfortable and correct. Pooled across a team, one thousand to two thousand. The instinct to go higher should be resisted, and not for reasons of thrift: a gift far above the level of the rest of the table is awkward for everybody in the room, including her, because it invites comparison with the gifts of people who have known her for thirty years. Being appropriate is the whole job here, and appropriate has an upper bound as well as a lower one. Two last notes. Write the card about her rather than about the baby or about her upcoming leave, since the second of those is what colleagues usually default to and it reads, faintly, as being about the office rather than about her. And if the shower is at work rather than at home - a desk or a meeting room - the same rules apply but tighten: keep it small, keep it addressed to a space, and hand it over without organising a ceremony around it.

Versailles
When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.
That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.
One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
