Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. Households include children, elderly parents, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than any visitor does, which is why gentle dosing is the default at home and why the settings we suggest are lower than the machine can run. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

Frequently asked questions
Is there any diffuser powerful enough to scent a lawn or courtyard?
No, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of power. A scenting machine works by building an even concentration inside a bounded volume of air, which is what a coverage rating in cubic metres describes. Outdoors there is no bound: a courtyard has walls but no ceiling, a lawn has neither, warm air rises out of the space all day, and even a light breeze replaces the air over your seating continuously. Increasing the output does not solve that, it just wastes more fragrance faster and produces a strong smell within a metre of the unit and nothing beyond it. This is true of every scenting machine ever built, from every brand, at every price, which is why no honest manufacturer publishes an outdoor coverage figure. What is genuinely worth your money is the indoor arrival and the rooms guests pass through, where a bounded volume exists and a machine does exactly what it says. What about scenting the marquee or the shamiana?
It depends entirely on how enclosed it actually is, and the honest test is simple: if the sides are open, it is outdoor air with a roof on it and the answer is still no. A marquee with genuinely closed walls, a sealed roof and its own air-conditioning starts to behave like a room, and in that case you can size it the same way you would size a room - floor area times height gives cubic feet, divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres, so a 1,200 sq ft enclosed marquee at a 10 ft height is 12,000 cubic feet or about 340 cubic metres. But most home functions use an open-sided shamiana over a courtyard or lawn, and that is not a volume, it is shade. Air passes through it freely in every direction and there is nothing to hold a scent level. If it is open-sided, put your fragrance indoors and your flowers along the route people walk.
We are spending a lot on this function. What is the best use of the fragrance budget?
The indoor arrival, without hesitation, because that is where the impression is actually formed. Guests come in through the house, leave bags and footwear somewhere, use a washroom, and retreat indoors when the sun gets high, and each of those is a moment where somebody steps out of open air into an enclosed room with a completely fresh nose. Do outdoor sprays, incense or fragrance torches work in a garden?
They work only in the sense that anything strong works within a metre or two of itself, which is the same limit that applies to a machine, and some of them bring problems of their own. A spray is momentary and gone within minutes in moving air. Incense and any burning product is a flame, and this whole section has one absolute safety rule about flame at Indian functions: keep fire well away from fabric, drapes, garlands, dupattas and children, and never place any fragrance product near a lamp or diya. There is also the guest question, which matters more than people admit. An outdoor function often has a hundred people at it, including pregnant women, elderly relatives, small children and at least one person prone to migraine, none of whom chose the fragrance and none of whom can move away if it is placed in the seating. Fresh flowers are the better answer on every count: they are strong exactly where you put them, harmless everywhere else, and nobody has ever objected to a mogra garland. If the machine cannot do the garden, is it still worth buying for a wedding at home?
Often yes, but for the indoor volume across the whole season rather than for one afternoon outside, and that distinction is the honest way to make the decision. A house hosting a wedding usually hosts several functions over weeks or months, plus a stream of relatives staying and visiting, and through all of that the connected indoor volume of entrance, hall, living, dining and passage is being walked through constantly.
