It travels in the only two ways anything airborne can, and both of them work against you over the width of a room. 1. Molecular diffusion, which is real but very slow. It is a source, and a source is not a delivery system
Be precise about what a reed diffuser actually produces, because the precision is what makes everything else obvious. It produces a small, steady, continuous supply of fragrance molecules at the surface of a few porous sticks. That is genuinely valuable and it is the reason the effect near the bottle is so pleasant and so reliable: there is always something being released, hour after hour, day after day, with no attention from you at all. But a source is not a delivery system. Think of a candle flame in a dark room. It is a real source of light and it lights its own corner beautifully; it does not become a floodlight because you want it to. Or think of a tap running gently into a basin. It supplies water perfectly well, and it has no ability to send that water to the far side of the kitchen. The reed is the tap. Once the fragrance has left the surface of the stick, the object has done everything it can do and has no further influence over where any of it goes. Once fragrance is airborne there are exactly two ways it can get anywhere, and it is worth understanding both because they fail for opposite reasons. Your nose responds to concentration, not to total quantity present, so the fragrance can be genuinely spread throughout the room and still be below the level at which you notice it. Slow and directionless, or fast and diluting. Neither is a courier.

When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. Frequently asked questions
Would putting my reed diffuser near an air conditioner help push the scent around?
It is one of the most common ideas and it usually backfires. An AC vent does move air with real force, so in principle it could carry evaporated fragrance outward. In practice three things happen. The moving air strips scent off the reeds faster, so the bottle empties sooner. The scent that leaves is immediately mixed into the whole volume of the room, which lowers concentration everywhere rather than concentrating it where you sit. And air conditioning dries and cools, and cooler air means slower evaporation from the reeds in the first place, so the supply falls at the same moment the removal rises. Almost everyone who tries this reports the diffuser seeming weaker. Keep a reed out of direct airflow, in a warmer and stiller spot at roughly seated nose height, and accept that its reach is local.
Does a heavier or richer fragrance travel further than a light one?
Different fragrance characters behave differently in a room, and it is fair to say that a warm ambery register with woods in it tends to read as more present than an airy white tea one, which is a perceptual observation rather than a measurement. What it is not is a solution to distance. Nothing about the character of an oil provides transport, so a richer scent is still being handed to the air at the surface of a reed and still has nothing carrying it across the room. We do not rank the seven Hotel Collection registers by throw or intensity, because there is no published data to support that and we will not invent it. What actually decides throw in practice is the machine, the setting and the volume of the room, which is another way of saying that this is a mechanism question rather than a fragrance question.
Why can I smell someone's perfume from across a room but not my reed diffuser?
Because a person is doing several things a bottle cannot. A perfume is sprayed, which is a genuine burst of force that throws droplets outward at speed. It is then applied to warm skin, and warmth accelerates evaporation considerably. Most importantly the person moves, walking through the room and stirring air as they go, which is transport in the most literal sense: the source physically relocates and drags a plume with it. A reed diffuser does none of that. It sits still on a table at room temperature, releasing gently and continuously with no burst, no warmth and no movement. It is also worth noticing that the perfume moment is brief and vivid while the diffuser is meant to be steady and unobtrusive, so they are not really trying to do the same thing at all.
If I open the door between two rooms, will the fragrance move into the second room?
A little will, and it will be fainter in both. Opening a door does not add fragrance; it adds volume. The same modest amount of evaporated scent now has two rooms to spread through instead of one, so the concentration drops in the room that had it and rises only slightly in the room that did not. This is exactly the problem with open-plan homes, where the living room flows into the dining area and the kitchen with no door in the chain and the true volume being scented is far larger than the floor plan suggests. If your goal is one fragrance held across connected spaces, that is a machine-scale question rather than a bottle-scale one, and it is the situation the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 was built for. Is there any placement trick that genuinely extends a reed diffuser's reach?
There is no trick that extends reach, and anyone promising one is not being straight with you. What good placement does is put more of the reach you already have where you actually are, which is worth real effort because it costs nothing. Move the bottle into the part of the room you occupy rather than the part that photographs well. Raise it to roughly seated or lying nose height instead of the floor. Keep it out of direct draughts from fans, vents, doorways and windows so the scent is not stripped away as fast as it forms. Choose the warmer and stiller side of the room. Flip the reeds weekly. Do all five and most people find the diffuser noticeably better than it was. The far corner will still be quiet, because you have optimised a passive system rather than replaced it with an active one.
