Regular diffuser cleaning matters because mineral scale, stagnant water and residue build up on the plate, cut your mist output and can start to smell. I am Sonal Sahani, an ISIPCA-trained perfumer, and a five-minute routine keeps a diffuser misting strong and smelling clean for years.
Quick answers — read this first
Why clean it so often? Scale and residue coat the ultrasonic plate and weaken the mist, and standing water grows a musty biofilm. A quick, regular clean prevents both before they start.
How often, exactly? Rinse the tank every couple of days, and descale weekly with diluted white vinegar. Empty it after use rather than leaving water to sit.
Does water quality matter? Yes. Filtered or RO water leaves far less scale than hard tap water, so the plate stays clean longer. Pair it with SOSA water-based fragrance.
The short answer
Why: scale, stagnant water and residue cut mist output and can smell.
Every couple of days: rinse the tank and wipe it dry.
Weekly: descale the plate with diluted white vinegar, then rinse.
Always: filtered water and SOSA water-based fragrance; empty after use.
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Because three things build up if you let them, and all three ruin the experience. Mineral scale from hard water crusts on the ultrasonic plate and steadily weakens the mist until it stops. Stagnant water left sitting grows a musty biofilm that the mist then carries into the room. And fragrance residue films the tank and plate over time. None of this is dramatic on any single day, which is exactly why people skip cleaning - and then wonder why the mist is feeble and the room smells faintly off. A five-minute routine prevents all of it and keeps the unit working like new.
One line: scale and standing water weaken the mist and cause smells - clean little and often.
Filtered water plus SOSA water-based fragrance keeps cleaning quick and the plate clean.
Skipping cleaning does not break a diffuser overnight. It degrades it quietly, and here is exactly how.
Scale weakens the mist. Hard water leaves a chalky mineral crust on the ultrasonic plate. That crust dampens the vibration, so the mist thins day by day. Left long enough, it stops the mist entirely - and people assume the machine has died when it just needs a descale.
Stagnant water smells. Water left standing in a warm tank grows a thin biofilm within a day or two. That film smells musty, and the mist carries it out into the room. Emptying the tank after use prevents it completely.
Residue builds up. Even water-based fragrance leaves a little residue over many fills, and hard water adds to it. Regular rinsing clears it before it can film the plate and dull the output.
Neglect shortens the unit's life. A plate that is always fighting through scale and film works harder and lasts less long. A clean plate mists effortlessly and keeps going for years. Cleaning is not fussiness; it is what makes the diffuser last.

The five-minute care routine
This is the whole thing. It takes minutes and it is the difference between a diffuser that lasts years and one that disappoints in months.
Empty after each use. Do not leave water sitting overnight. Tip it out and the biofilm never forms.
Rinse every couple of days. A quick rinse with clean water and a wipe of the inside with a soft cloth clears any residue starting to build.
Descale weekly with white vinegar. Diluted white vinegar - about one part vinegar to two parts water - left a few minutes, then a gentle wipe of the plate and a thorough rinse. This lifts scale and any film in one go.
Use filtered water and water-based fragrance. Filtered or RO water leaves far less scale, and SOSA water-based fragrance mists cleanly without an oily film. Never hot water, never raw oils.
Why white vinegar is the right descaler
Mineral scale is alkaline, and mild acid dissolves it. Diluted white vinegar is gentle, food-safe, cheap and effective - it lifts scale and light oily residue without harsh chemicals that could damage the plate or linger in the mist. Always rinse well afterwards so no vinegar smell carries over.
Five minutes a week keeps the mist strong and the scent clean. Skip it and the diffuser slowly stops being the thing you loved.
The SOSA range
SOSA makes three cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers for different rooms, each arriving with three of our water-based Hotel Collection fragrances so you can scent from day one. Prices and headline specs below are live from the SOSA store. Whichever you choose, use only the SOSA water-based fragrance - raw essential or carrier oils can clog the misting plate.
SOSA range
3 ultrasonic diffusers + the water-based Hotel Collection refill
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.
They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.
One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it important to clean my diffuser regularly?
Because mineral scale, stagnant water and fragrance residue build up on the plate and in the tank, weakening the mist and causing a musty smell. Regular cleaning keeps the mist strong, the scent clean, and extends the life of the unit.
How often should I clean my ultrasonic diffuser?
Empty it after each use, rinse the tank every couple of days, and descale weekly with diluted white vinegar. Using filtered water and SOSA water-based fragrance keeps that routine quick and the plate clean.
How do I descale my diffuser with white vinegar?
Empty the tank, add diluted white vinegar (about one part vinegar to two parts water), leave it a few minutes, then gently wipe the plate with a soft cloth or cotton bud and rinse thoroughly so no vinegar smell carries over.
Does using filtered water reduce cleaning?
Yes. Filtered or RO water leaves far less mineral scale than hard tap water, so the plate stays clean longer and descaling is easier. It is one of the simplest ways to keep a diffuser misting strongly.
What happens if I never clean my diffuser?
Scale builds on the plate and the mist weakens then stops; stagnant water grows a biofilm and the room smells musty; and residue films the plate. Neglect makes the unit work harder and shortens its life. A five-minute weekly routine prevents all of it.
