What is a room actually doing to a fragrance that makes two rooms disagree so completely?
Six things, in descending order of importance. 1. Volume. Floor area times ceiling height. A 100 sq ft room at 10 ft holds 1,000 cubic feet, about 28m³; a 200 sq ft room holds 2,000 cubic feet, about 57m³. The same evaporation, halved. 2. Air exchange. A shut door lets hours of quiet evaporation accumulate; a ceiling fan, an AC, an open window or a busy doorway removes scented air continuously, and a passive bottle cannot speed up to compensate. 3. Temperature. Evaporation is temperature-driven, so a warm room draws more oil off the reeds than an air-conditioned one, which is also why the same diffuser is livelier in May than in December. 4. These two do most of the work and everything else is a footnote to them. Volume is simply how much air the fragrance has to disperse through, and the honest unit is floor area multiplied by ceiling height rather than square feet: a 100 sq ft room under a 10 ft ceiling holds 1,000 cubic feet, about 28 cubic metres once divided by 35.3, while a 200 sq ft room holds 2,000 cubic feet, about 57 cubic metres. Identical evaporation into twice the air gives roughly half the concentration, before anything else happens. Air exchange then decides whether the fragrance is allowed to accumulate at all. A reed releases slowly and continuously, so in a room that holds its air the releases stack up over hours into something you notice on walking in. In a room where a ceiling fan turns all evening, an AC circulates and a door stands open, scented air is exported as fast as it is made, and the level never climbs. Two rooms of the same size can differ enormously on this second point alone.

Warmth, damp and everything soft in the room
The next three are smaller but real, and together they explain most of the leftover mystery. Temperature comes first: evaporation from the reeds is driven by heat, so a warm room pulls more oil into the air than a cool one, which is why the same bottle feels livelier in a Mumbai May than a Delhi December, and quieter in an air-conditioned bedroom than in the bathroom next door. Humidity works on what happens after evaporation: in damp air, scent tends to linger rather than settling out quickly, while very dry air lets it fall away sooner. Then there is everything soft in the room. Curtains, rugs, upholstery, bedding and cushions present an enormous surface area and absorb fragrance out of the air, so a heavily furnished bedroom reads noticeably quieter than a bare one of identical size. The consolation is that those same fabrics release scent slowly afterwards, which is why a well-dressed room holds a gentle background for longer once it has genuinely been scented.

Where you sit, and how quickly your nose stops noticing
The last variable is not in the room at all. A passive diffuser produces a gradient that is strongest at the bottle, so the single biggest thing you control for free is the distance between the reeds and the chair, desk or bed you actually occupy. A bottle on a far shelf and a bottle on your bedside table are the same product having entirely different careers. Height matters too: put it near seated or lying nose height rather than on the floor, and out of the fan's direct path so it is not being thinned away. Then there is adaptation, which catches everybody. Your nose pushes a continuous smell into the background within minutes, so your own home always seems less fragrant to you than to a visitor, and chasing a level you can still notice is how people end up with rooms that feel heavy to guests. Trust visitors over your own nose, keep dosing gentle in a house with children, elderly relatives or pets, and treat any headache as a signal to turn things down. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Evaporation from the reeds is temperature-driven, so a warm room pulls more oil into the air than a cool one, and the same diffuser that felt generous through a hot May can feel quiet in an air-conditioned July or a cold December. Air conditioning does two things at once: it lowers the temperature, which slows evaporation, and it circulates and dries the air, which carries scent away and lets it settle out faster. So the same bottle in the same room can genuinely behave differently across a year with nothing wrong at all. Judge a diffuser over a couple of weeks in stable conditions rather than on a single unusual day, and remember that a SOSA reed runs about six to ten weeks in total, softening gently towards the end.
Why does my bedroom feel quieter than my guest room, which is the same size?
Almost always air exchange and soft furnishing. Your bedroom is lived in: the fan runs, the AC runs, the door opens dozens of times, the window is used. The guest room sits with the door shut and the fan off for days at a stretch, so whatever evaporates simply accumulates, which is exactly the bathroom effect in a larger room. On top of that, a bedroom in daily use usually carries more fabric - bedding that changes, curtains that are drawn, clothes, cushions, a rug - and fabric absorbs fragrance from the air. Try this as a test: close your bedroom door and switch the fan off for a full day while you are out, then walk in fresh. If it smells markedly better, air exchange was your answer, and an active diffuser is the way to get that result without keeping a bedroom shut.
Should I buy different fragrances for different rooms?
By character, yes, and it is one of the pleasures of home fragrance. What we would avoid is choosing by imagined strength, because there is no honest ranking of throw between our fragrances and what you perceive is decided by the room and the machine far more than by the blend. Choose by mood instead: something bright like Morning Freshness at Rs 749 for a bathroom you use in the morning, something restful like Evening Calm at Rs 799 for a bedside, something green like Mountain Breeze at Rs 849 for a study. One practical caution: fragrances that meet in a passage or an open-plan area will mix, and two strong characters colliding rarely flatters either. Keep neighbouring open spaces in the same family and save the contrast for rooms with doors between them.
Do open-plan homes make all of this worse?
They change the question rather than making it worse, but yes, they make a passive reed's job much harder. In an open plan the fragrance is not filling the room you measured; it is dispersing into every connected space with no door in between. Add a living room at 252 sq ft, a dining area at 120 sq ft and a passage at 48 sq ft and you have 420 sq ft of connected floor, which at a 10 ft ceiling is 4,200 cubic feet or about 119 cubic metres - seven times a small bathroom. No passive bottle addresses a volume like that, and no number of bottles does either, because each simply creates its own local zone. For a single closed room it would be far too much machine, and we would tell you so.
Is it a problem if I cannot smell my own diffuser any more?
It is usually adaptation rather than a spent bottle, and it happens to everyone. Live with a continuous scent and your nose files it as background within minutes, which is why you can walk into your own home and notice nothing while a visitor comments at the door. Two checks separate adaptation from a genuinely finished diffuser. First, ask someone who does not live there. Second, leave the house for a few hours and pay attention to the first breath when you return, before your nose settles again. If it is still there, nothing is wrong. If the bottle is also low and it has been running eight or nine weeks, it is simply approaching the end of its six to ten week life. What you should not do is add sticks to chase a level your own nose has stopped registering, because guests will find it heavy.
