You choose an ultrasonic over a reed diffuser when you want an adjustable, humidifying, stronger scent throw and are happy to give it power and a weekly clean; you choose a reed when you want flame-free, no-power, quieter and gentler scent. I am Sonal Sahani, an ISIPCA-trained perfumer - SOSA makes both, so I will help you pick, not push one.
Quick answers — read this first
Which is stronger? Ultrasonic. It actively mists fragrance into the room and you can turn it up. A reed relies on passive evaporation up the sticks, so it is gentler and steadier.
Which is lower-maintenance? A reed. No power, no cleaning, no plate - just flip the reeds now and then. An ultrasonic needs power, filtered water and a weekly descale.
Which should I buy? It depends on the need. Strong, adjustable, humidifying scent for a big or dry room - ultrasonic. Set-and-forget, flame-free, quiet scent for a small space - reed. SOSA makes both.
The short answer
Ultrasonic: adjustable, humidifies, stronger throw; needs power and weekly cleaning.
Reed: flame-free, no power, quieter, gentler; steady but not adjustable.
Honest: neither is better overall - they suit different rooms and needs.
SOSA: makes both, so pick by the room, not by loyalty to a format.
You choose an ultrasonic when you want more control and more presence: it actively mists fragrance so the throw is stronger, you can turn it up or down, and it adds a little humidity to dry air - useful in a bigger room or an AC-parched one. The trade is that it needs power and a weekly clean. A reed asks for none of that - it is flame-free, silent, needs no electricity and just sits there working - but it is gentler and you cannot dial it up. So it is truly a needs question, and I will not pretend the reed is the poor cousin. SOSA makes both because both are right, for different rooms.
One line: ultrasonic for adjustable, humidifying, stronger scent; reed for flame-free, no-power calm.
Prefer flame-free and hands-off? SOSA reed diffusers are here too.
I make and sell both, so I have no reason to talk one down. Here is the straight comparison, strengths and trade-offs on each side.
Ultrasonic diffuser
Reed diffuser
Scent throw
Stronger, active mist
Gentler, passive evaporation
Adjustable
Yes - turn it up or down
No - steady output
Humidity
Adds a little cool mist
None
Power
Needs mains or USB
None - fully passive
Noise
Very quiet hum
Silent
Maintenance
Weekly descale, filtered water
Flip reeds occasionally
Flame
None - cool mist
None - flame-free
Best for
Bigger or dry rooms, control
Small spaces, set and forget
The honest summary: the ultrasonic wins on strength, control and humidity; the reed wins on simplicity, silence and zero maintenance. Both are flame-free. Neither is the better diffuser in the abstract - they are better at different things.
Myth: reed diffusers are the cheap, weak option. They are not weak, they are gentle and steady by design, and that is exactly what you want in a small, always-on space like a bathroom or entryway. A reed asks nothing of you and never quits at midnight.
How to choose for your room
Forget which format is fashionable. Choose by the room and how you want to live with it.
Choose an ultrasonic if: the room is medium to large or AC-dry, you want a stronger scent you can adjust, you like a soft mist and a little humidity, and you do not mind a weekly rinse and descale. Boond for a desk, Sukoon for a bedroom, Megh for a living room.
Choose a reed if: the space is small, you want zero effort and zero power, you value silence, or you want scent somewhere a device would be awkward - a guest bathroom, a hallway, a shelf. Flip the reeds now and then and it just works.
Or have both. Honestly, this is what I do - an ultrasonic in the living room and bedroom for presence and humidity, reeds in the bathroom and entrance for effortless, always-on freshness. They complement each other.
One thing only the ultrasonic asks of you
An ultrasonic diffuser needs SOSA water-based fragrance and filtered water, and a weekly descale with diluted white vinegar to keep the plate misting. A reed asks for none of that - but it also cannot be turned up or add humidity. That trade is the whole decision.
This is not ultrasonic versus reed. It is which one fits which room. I built both because both are right - just not for the same job.
The SOSA range
SOSA makes three cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers for different rooms, each arriving with three of our water-based Hotel Collection fragrances so you can scent from day one. Prices and headline specs below are live from the SOSA store. Whichever you choose, use only the SOSA water-based fragrance - raw essential or carrier oils can clog the misting plate.
SOSA range
3 ultrasonic diffusers + the water-based Hotel Collection refill
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.
They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.
One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.
Frequently asked questions
Is an ultrasonic diffuser better than a reed diffuser?
Neither is better overall - they suit different needs. An ultrasonic gives an adjustable, stronger scent throw plus a little humidity but needs power and weekly cleaning. A reed is flame-free, silent, needs no power and no maintenance, but is gentler and cannot be adjusted.
Which diffuser has a stronger scent, ultrasonic or reed?
The ultrasonic. It actively mists fragrance into the room and you can turn the output up. A reed relies on passive evaporation up the sticks, which is gentler and steadier by design - ideal for small, always-on spaces.
Which diffuser is lower maintenance?
The reed. It needs no power and no cleaning - you just flip the reeds occasionally. An ultrasonic needs mains or USB power, filtered water, SOSA water-based fragrance, and a weekly descale to keep the plate misting.
Does SOSA make both ultrasonic and reed diffusers?
Yes. SOSA makes cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers (Boond, Sukoon and Megh) and alcohol-free, flame-free reed diffusers. The right choice depends on the room and how much you want to interact with it - not on loyalty to one format.
Can I use both an ultrasonic and a reed diffuser at home?
Absolutely, and many people do. An ultrasonic in living rooms and bedrooms gives presence and humidity; reeds in bathrooms and hallways give effortless, always-on, flame-free scent. They complement each other well.
