Founder Diaries · Commercial Scent Marketing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
In most commercial spaces placement is a question of coverage: where does the output land, and does the far corner get the same air as the doorway. In an aesthetic clinic that is the second question. The first is which side of the building the machine is allowed to influence at all, because everything behind the treatment corridor is a zone you have already decided never to scent. Get the zoning right and the position almost chooses itself.
Quick answers — read this first
Where should a scent machine go in an aesthetic clinic? In the reception and waiting area, and nowhere else. Within that space, set it back a few metres from the entrance, above seated head height, and out of the immediate air of the waiting chairs rather than beside or above them. Keep it off the reception counter, where patients stand at close range at check-in and where your front-desk team sit unmasked all day. Keep it away from the mouth of the corridor that feeds the treatment rooms, away from sterile storage, consumables shelving and the medication fridge, and away from the supply grille of any air-conditioning that serves the treatment side. Then lock the setting so nobody adjusts it by hand.

Why should the machine not go in the corridor to the treatment rooms? Because that corridor is a door that opens forty times a day into rooms you have decided will never be scented. Every time a cabin door opens, corridor air walks in with the patient and the clinician, and a machine placed there is quietly putting fragrance into treatment rooms by the back route. That corridor is also usually where the linen trolley, the consumables shelving and the dressing trolley live, which is the second reason to keep a diffuser out of it. Corridor air in a skin clinic is a ventilation and door-discipline job. It is not a place to add anything.

Should the diffuser sit on the reception counter? It is the most convenient spot and the worst one. A patient at the counter is at arm's length for check-in and payment, often already carrying topical anaesthetic under occlusion and waiting for it to work, and in no position to step back from a strong point source. Your front-desk team sit in that exact air for a full shift with no mask on, which the clinicians moving between cabins do not. And a unit on a counter is the unit everybody handles: turned up on a slow morning, turned down when a patient winces, moved to make room for a card machine. Put it on a shelf or a high ledge, set back into the room.
The short answer
Short answer: Place an aesthetic clinic scent machine in the reception and waiting area only: set back from the entrance, above seated head height, out of the immediate air of the waiting chairs, off the reception counter, away from the corridor that feeds the treatment rooms, and away from sterile storage, consumables and the medication fridge. Lock the intensity so nobody adjusts it by hand, and keep the off switch one tap away at the front desk. Never place a unit in a treatment room, a laser room, an injectable room or a room where a patient is undergoing a procedure. Vaayu Rs 11,999, Megh Rs 3,499, Sukoon Rs 1,899, registers from Rs 299. Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Where exactly does the scent machine go in an aesthetic clinic, and where must it never go?
Five placement rules, and the first one is absolute. 1. One side of the building only. Reception and waiting. Never a treatment or procedure room, never a laser room, never an injectable room, never anywhere sterile supplies or medication are stored, and never a room where a patient is undergoing a procedure. Placement is a zoning decision first and a position second. 2. Out of the immediate air of the waiting chairs. Set the unit back a few metres from the entrance, above seated head height, and never beside, above or behind a chair. Your waiting seats hold people who are pre-procedure with numbing cream on, and people who came out of a cabin ten minutes ago and were told not to touch their face. Whoever draws the seat nearest a point source should not have a different experience from the person opposite. 3. Off the counter. The patient is at arm's length at check-in and the front desk sits there unmasked all day. A shelf or a high ledge set back into the room is better in every respect. 4. Never the treatment corridor. That corridor opens into rooms you have decided never to scent, and it usually carries the linen and consumables trolleys as well. It needs ventilation and closed doors, not a diffuser. Keep the unit away from the mouth of it and away from any air-conditioning supply that feeds the treatment side. 5. Lock the level, keep the off switch close. Set intensity and schedule once on a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, Bluetooth app and timer) or fix the drop count and fill routine on a Sukoon (₹1,899) or Megh (₹3,499), running a dry register from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) - the Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar, or the Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar. These are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand. Locked does not mean unreachable: the front desk must be able to switch it off in one move, that day, for any patient who asks. Your clinician's judgement overrides every line of this page. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floor plan. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: reception and waiting only, set back and above seated head height, out of the chairs' air, off the counter, never the treatment corridor, locked setting with a one-tap off. Vaayu ₹11,999, Sukoon ₹1,899, registers from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Placement here is a zoning decision before it is a position

Three things decide placement in a skin clinic: which zone the machine is allowed to influence, who is sitting closest to it, and who is allowed to touch it.

Why this works
Placing it correctly in a clinic where most rooms are off the list
1Reception and waiting only - the treatment side of the clinic gets nothing2Set back, above seated head height, out of the waiting chairs' own air3Never the corridor feeding treatment rooms, never near sterile storage4Locked setting, one-tap off at the desk - Vaayu Rs 11,999 gives you both
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The zone
Draw the line on the floor plan before you look for a socket
Take a plan of the clinic and put a pencil line across it at the point where the waiting area stops and the treatment side begins - usually the doorway or archway into the corridor. Everything on the far side of that line is out of scope permanently: the treatment and procedure cabins, the laser room, the room where injectables are given, the store where sterile consumables and dressings sit, the medication fridge, the dirty utility and the autoclave point. That is not a preference, it is the specification, and it removes most of the building from the placement conversation before you have thought about coverage at all. What is left is a single connected volume of reception and waiting, which in a mid-sized aesthetic clinic is typically 400 to 700 square feet. Take 500 square feet under a nine-foot false ceiling: 4,500 cubic feet, divided by 35.3, or about 127 cubic metres. Take 700 square feet at ten feet: 7,000 cubic feet, about 198 cubic metres. Both sit far inside what any machine on the SOSA ladder handles, which is the useful part - at that volume you are not choosing a position to win coverage, you are choosing a position that keeps the output away from the things and the people it should stay away from.
Tip: draw the line at the corridor doorway first - everything beyond it is out of scope, permanently.
2
The chairs
Who is sitting in the seat nearest the machine
A waiting area in a skin clinic is not a lobby with people in it. On a normal afternoon it holds someone who arrived forty minutes early because their topical anaesthetic has to sit under occlusion before a laser or a microneedling appointment, someone who came out of a cabin ten minutes ago with a cold pack and instructions not to touch their face for the rest of the day, someone mid-course on an oral retinoid, and someone here for a first consultation who is quietly self-conscious about being seen. Every one of them is seated, still, and staying put. That is the reason the machine goes above seated head height and set back rather than beside a chair: a point source next to seat four gives whoever sits there a materially different room from the person opposite, and in this waiting area that difference is not theoretical. The practical test is a walk. Sit in every chair for two minutes on a normal working morning and see whether any of them feels different from the others. If one does, move the machine rather than dropping the setting, because dropping the setting to protect one seat leaves the rest of the room reading as nothing at all.
3
The lock
Locked intensity, and an off switch the front desk can reach
Two requirements sit in tension here and both matter. The first is that nobody adjusts the level by hand. Clinic air drifts louder over months because the people who work in it stop noticing it, conclude the machine has stopped, and turn it up - and then repeat that from the new baseline six weeks later. A unit on an open counter with a physical dial invites exactly that. Set the intensity and the schedule once through the app on a Vaayu (₹11,999), or write the drop count and fill routine on a card taped to a Sukoon (₹1,899), and put one named person in charge of the specification. The second requirement is the opposite in spirit and non-negotiable in a clinic: switching the whole thing off must take one move, be available to whoever is at the front desk, and require no permission. A patient who says the fragrance is a problem for them today gets it turned off today, without a discussion and without anyone explaining the calibration to them. Locked means locked against drift, not locked against a patient. Position the unit so that both are true: out of casual reach, within immediate reach of the person who needs to switch it off.
Tip: locked against drift, never locked against a patient - the front desk must be able to switch it off in one move.
The SOSA principle
Placement in a skin clinic is not about where the output lands. It is about which half of the building the machine is allowed to influence - and then, inside that half, who is sitting closest.
Reception and waiting, set back and high, out of the chairs' air, away from the corridor and the stores, locked against drift and one tap from off.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Can the machine go in the consultation room if no procedures happen there?
Only if you are certain that is true, and in most aesthetic clinics it is not. A room described as a consultation room usually turns out to host a skin analysis, a patch of numbing cream, a quick extraction, a swab or a dressing check, and the moment any of that happens it is a room where a patient is undergoing a procedure and it comes off the list. Even where it is genuinely a desk, two chairs and a screen, the safer default in a small clinic is to leave it unscented and let the reception register reach it when the door is open, which is usually enough for the patient to read the practice as one consistent space. Your clinician decides that, not a floor plan, and if there is any doubt the answer is to leave the room alone.
Our reception has a retail display of skincare. Does that change the placement?
It is worth thinking about, for a reason that is commercial rather than clinical. A dispensing shelf of active skincare is a display your patients are being asked to trust, and a diffuser placed directly over it puts an ambient fragrance into the air immediately around products that are frequently chosen for being fragrance-free. That is a presentation problem rather than a product one, but it is a real one. Keep the machine on the other side of the room from the display, set back and high as everywhere else, and keep the level where nobody could describe the shelf as smelling of anything. If your clinician would rather the retail area were out of the scented zone entirely, that is a reasonable position and it costs you nothing to honour it.
Where should the machine go if reception and waiting are two separate rooms?
In the one where patients actually spend time, which is the waiting area rather than the counter. A patient stands at reception for two or three minutes and sits in the waiting area for twenty to forty, and in a clinic that runs pre-procedure numbing appointments it can be considerably longer than that. If the two rooms share air through an open doorway, one correctly placed unit covers both and a second machine would only give you two settings that drift apart. If they are separated by a door that stays closed, treat them as two volumes and ask honestly whether the reception needs anything at all - often it does not, because nobody is in it long enough to form an impression from the air.
Does it matter which way the air-conditioning throws?
It matters more here than the position on the shelf does, and it takes ten minutes to work out. Find the cassettes or split units in the front of house, watch which way they throw, and find the return path. Place the machine so the room's own circulation picks the output up and spreads it, rather than firing across a supply grille or straight at the entrance door. The specific thing to check in a clinic is whether any front-of-house unit shares ducting or an open path with the treatment side; if it does, you are one grille away from putting fragrance into a room that is supposed to have none. Most Indian clinics run individual units per room and the question resolves quickly, but check rather than assume, and send us the layout on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 if it is not obvious.
Should the machine be hidden inside a cabinet so it is out of sight?
No. A closed cabinet collects the output instead of releasing it into the room, somebody eventually turns the setting up to compensate, and you end up with a strongly scented cupboard and a waiting area that reads as nothing. It also hides whether the unit is running, which matters in a building where the ability to switch it off quickly is part of the specification. Discreet is the goal rather than concealed: a well-made unit on a high shelf, behind a plant, on a ledge above the seating line, in open air. Patients should not be able to point at where the smell comes from, and your front desk should be able to see at a glance that it is on.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
