Placement in a listing is decided by three things in a strict order, and the order surprises people. First, where there is a working socket - the machine is mains powered, so this is a constraint before it is a preference. Second, where the property's air actually moves, because a machine in a dead corner scents that corner and nothing else. Third, where the buyer will not see it, because a visible diffuser at the entrance tells them in one glance that the smell is a device. Most brokers reverse that order, choose the prettiest spot, and get a flat with one scented pocket and a machine in the photographs.
Quick answers — read this first
Where should you put a diffuser in a property you are showing? On a console table, shelf or sideboard at roughly waist to chest height, one room in from the front door, in the path the property's air actually takes - typically the junction where the entrance passage, the living room and the bedroom corridor meet. It needs a live socket, because the SOSA Vaayu is mains powered at DC 12V and 5W rather than battery, and it should be out of the buyer's direct sightline: behind a plant, on a lower shelf, on the far side of a console. What it must never do is sit at the front door blowing towards it. That produces the strongest concentration at exactly the point where the buyer takes their first and most attentive breath.

Can a Vaayu be used freestanding in a property, or does it need installing? Freestanding. SOSA's own installation note for the Vaayu is freestanding, laid flat, or wall and HVAC mounted, which is precisely what makes it usable for a listing rather than only for a permanent space - it stands on a console table or a shelf, runs, and is carried out again. The wall and HVAC mounting options are for permanent installations such as your own office or a developer's sales gallery, not for a flat you will be out of in six weeks. The only fixed requirement is a working socket within reach, and in a vacant property that is worth confirming on a day that is not viewing day.

Should the machine be near the entrance of a property? Near it, not at it. The entrance is where the buyer's attention is highest and their nose is freshest, so it is the last place you want the raw output of a machine. Put it one room in, so what reaches the doorway is scent that has already travelled, mixed and evened out. A useful test: stand where the buyer will stand when the door opens and see whether you can locate the machine by smell. If you can, move it further in and drop the setting. If the entrance is genuinely the only place with a live socket, run it earlier and lower and switch it off well before the appointment.
The short answer
Short answer: Place the machine on a console table or shelf at waist to chest height, one room in from the front door, in the property's natural airflow path, and out of the buyer's sightline. The SOSA Vaayu is freestanding (lay flat) or wall and HVAC mounted, and it is mains powered - DC 12V, 1A, 5W - so a live socket is a hard constraint, particularly in a vacant flat. Never point it at the front door and never leave it in a dead corner. Keep cables off open floor. Vaayu Rs 11,999, reeds from Rs 749 for rooms with no power. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Commercial scent marketing - at a glanceStep 1 - customers judge your premises in the first breath, before a wordStep 2 - one signature = premium feel, longer visits, brand recallStep 3 - size the system: Vaayu ₹11,999 covers most commercial floorsSingle rooms - reeds ₹749 · large premises - HVAC to ₹38,500Scheduled, hands-off · WhatsApp consult available
Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Where exactly should I stand a scent machine in a property I am showing?
Five decisions, in this order. 1. The socket decides first. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is mains powered at DC 12V, 1A and 5W. Low draw, but not a battery, so it goes where there is a live point. In an occupied flat that is a footnote; in a vacant one, walk the property with a phone charger on a non-viewing day and find out which points actually work. 2. Then the airflow. Put it in the line the air already takes - near an air conditioning return, in the passage that joins the entrance to the living room, on the axis between the balcony door and the front door. SOSA's own coverage note for the Vaayu is one unit for 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft evenly, using the room's natural airflow: the machine works with the property's air, so a dead corner behind a door defeats it entirely. 3. Then the height. A console table, a sideboard or a shelf, roughly waist to chest, so the output enters moving air rather than pooling at floor level. It is freestanding and lies flat, which is what makes a console table a legitimate answer rather than a compromise. 4. Then the sightline. One room in from the entrance, behind a plant, on the far end of a console, not on the shoe cabinet by the door and not in the frame of the photograph the buyer takes of the living room. 5. Then the cable. In an empty flat with hard floors a trailing wire across marble is both a trip hazard and visually the opposite of the impression you are building - route it along the skirting, or move the machine. Never: pointed at the front door, in a bathroom, in the kitchen, next to the bin, on the floor of a dusty vacant flat, or beside the chair the buyer will sit in. Three constraints, in the order they actually bind

Power, airflow and sightline, in that order - and a short list of the placements that look sensible and are not.

Why this works
The placement order that actually holds
1Live socket first - the Vaayu is mains powered at DC 12V, 5W, not battery2Then airflow: the AC return, the entrance passage, the balcony-to-door axis3Then height and sightline: console or shelf, waist to chest, one room in from the door4Never pointed at the front door, never in a dead corner, never a cable across marble
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
Power
The constraint that decides the answer before taste gets a vote
The Vaayu runs on DC 12V at 1A - about 5W. That is a genuinely small draw and it means the machine can run for hours in a listing without anyone thinking about the electricity bill. What it also means is that this is a mains machine, not a cordless one, and placement is bounded by where a live point exists. In an occupied flat you have a choice of a dozen sockets and the question is aesthetic. In a vacant listing it very often is not. Resale units come with the supply account closed; builder flats sit on temporary connections that feed some circuits and not others; a property that has been empty for a year may have a tripped main that nobody has reset. The practical move is to audit the sockets on a day that is not viewing day, with a phone charger, and write the working ones on the same sheet as the key handover notes. Two live points in the living room and nothing in the passage is a common finding and it changes the placement plan completely. If the answer comes back that there is no supply at all, the machine is simply the wrong tool for that property and reed diffusers from ₹749 are the right one - they need no power, no timing and no switching off, and honesty about that is worth more to you than a sale we would rather not make.
Tip: audit the live sockets before viewing day - in a vacant flat the answer is often two points in one room.
2
Airflow
A machine in still air scents a bubble, not a property
SOSA's coverage figure for the Vaayu is one unit across 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft evenly, using the room's natural airflow, and that last clause carries the weight. The machine distributes into air that is already moving; it does not push scent through a closed flat by force. So the placement question is really a question about where the property's air goes. In most Indian apartments there are three usable answers. Near an air conditioning return, if the system is running, because that is a point where air is being drawn from the whole connected space and returned to it. In the passage that joins the entrance to the living area, because that is the pipe every other room is connected through. Or on the axis between the balcony door and the front door, which is the property's own cross-ventilation route and the strongest air movement in the flat. The failures are all versions of the same mistake: a machine tucked behind a door leaf, in an alcove, in a corner of a bedroom with the door half shut, or under a console with a solid back and sides. Each of those scents a bubble of a few cubic metres beautifully and leaves the rest of the property untouched, which is what a broker is describing when they say the machine seemed to work in one room and do nothing anywhere else. In a vacant flat, where the air is genuinely still, this matters more than anywhere - put the ceiling fans on low for the scenting window and the same machine in the same place performs completely differently.
3
Sightline
A buyer who sees the machine stops experiencing the air and starts assessing it
There is an asymmetry worth being clear about. A pleasant, unnameable smell in a property is experienced as a property that is cared for. The same smell with a visible diffuser attached to it is experienced as a technique, and the buyer's next thought is about what the technique is for. That is not a reason to be secretive - nobody is deceived by a machine, and any buyer who asks should get a straight answer - but it is a good reason not to put it in their line of sight at the moment they form their first impression. In practice: one room in from the entrance rather than on the console by the door, on the lower shelf rather than the eye-level one, behind a plant, on the far end of a sideboard, and never on the shoe cabinet or the hall table where it becomes the first object in the flat. The same logic applies to the listing photographs, which most brokers forget: a small black box on the console in the hero shot of the living room is a detail buyers notice and read exactly the way you would expect. The wall and HVAC mounting options are worth mentioning here, because they solve this problem properly - but they solve it for a permanent space such as your own office or a developer's gallery, not for a flat you will hand back in six weeks. In a listing, freestanding and out of sight is the honest answer.
Tip: if it appears in the listing photographs, it is in the wrong place - check the hero shot before viewing day.
The SOSA principle
Placement is a power question, then an airflow question, then a design question - and the number of brokers who solve it in the reverse order is the reason most listings have one scented room.
One room in from the door, in the air the property already moves, at console height, out of the frame.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an extension lead to get the machine where I want it?
Electrically it is not an issue - at 5W the machine draws almost nothing and any working extension will carry it. Visually and practically it usually is. A cable running across a marble or wooden floor in an otherwise empty premium flat is a trip hazard in a property where people are walking backwards to look at ceilings, and it is exactly the kind of untidy detail that undercuts the impression you are spending money to build. If an extension is unavoidable, route it hard against the skirting, tape it down at any crossing, and put the machine at the far end rather than leaving loops of slack visible. The better answer is usually to move the machine to the socket rather than the socket to the machine, and to accept a slightly worse placement in exchange for no cable at all.
Does the machine need to be in the middle of the property?
Not geometrically in the middle, but functionally near the junction. The point you want is where the property's circulation meets - typically where the entrance passage opens into the living area and the bedroom corridor branches off - because that is the point connected to the largest number of rooms by moving air. In many flats that is not the physical centre of the floor plate at all, and in a long linear apartment it may be well towards one end. The way to find it without guessing is to open the flat up, stand in the passage, and notice where you can feel air moving between the balcony and the front door. That line is the property's own distribution system and the machine belongs on it.
Should I move the machine between rooms during a long open house?
No, and the instinct to do it is worth resisting. Moving a machine mid-viewing produces exactly the patchiness you are trying to avoid: a room that was scented an hour ago and is fading, a room that is being scented right now and is briefly strong, and a buyer walking between the two. It also means somebody is handling the machine in front of visitors. One placement, held for the whole session at a low setting, produces a more even result than any amount of repositioning. If a single placement genuinely cannot reach the whole property - a duplex, a villa, a flat with a long closed corridor - that is a zoning question rather than a movement question, and the answer is a second unit or a reed diffuser in the outlying room, not a machine on the move.
Where should it not go, specifically?
Pointed at the front door, which puts the highest concentration exactly where the buyer takes their most attentive breath. In a bathroom, where the extract fan removes it and where a scented bathroom in a property viewing invites the wrong question. In the kitchen or anywhere near a bin, where it mixes with food and waste smells into something worse than either. On the floor of a vacant flat, where it sits in still air and collects dust from a property nobody is cleaning daily. In a bedroom with the door mostly shut, which scents a room the buyer spends ninety seconds in and nothing else. And beside the seat where a buyer will sit down to talk numbers with you, because that is the one place in the property where someone is stationary long enough for a low ambient level to stop being low.
Is wall mounting worth it if I always show the same building?
It can be, and that is a genuinely different situation from a normal listing. A broker with a permanent presence in one project - a site office, a display unit you control, your own premises - is looking at a permanent installation, and there the wall or HVAC mounting options make sense: nothing on the furniture, no cable, no set-up before each appointment, and a machine that cannot be knocked over or walked off with. For a listing you have on your books for a few weeks or months, mounting anything to somebody else's wall is a conversation with the owner that is rarely worth having, and freestanding on a console does the same job. If you are scenting your own office rather than a listing, that is a permanent job with different rules - WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531 and we will size it as one.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
