Founder Diaries · Affordable Gifting · When You Don’t Know What to Buy
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
Give something that gets used up. "They have everything" is a statement about storage, not about taste — the constraint is a full house, so the category-correct answer is a consumable rather than a cleverer object. A reed diffuser occupies a corner of a surface, works every day for weeks, and then finishes. The 50ml is ₹749–₹849 and runs 6–8 weeks; the 130ml is ₹1,249–₹1,349 and runs 14–18.
Quick answers — read this first
The reframe: a shelf problem, not a taste problem. Searching harder for a stranger object solves the wrong thing and produces the worst gifts of the year — obscure things that take up exactly as much shelf as the ordinary ones.

The default: Mountain Breeze 130ml at ₹1,349 — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, 14–18 weeks, and the driest, least gendered thing we make. The 50ml at ₹849 is the standard size.

If you want the gift to hedge itself: a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 — two 50ml bottles in two registers, so they keep the one they prefer.

If they already own a diffuser: a 12ml attar ₹1,149–₹1,199, or the Sukoon ultrasonic machine ₹1,899 — though a machine is a kept object, which is the whole thing this page argues against.

The honest gap: there is no SOSA gift card, no hamper and no curated gift set, so the "let them pick" escape is unavailable. There is also no reed diffuser below ₹749 and no machine below ₹899.
The short answer
Short answer: give a consumable. Somebody who has everything does not have unusual taste — they have a full house, and every additional permanent object arrives with a storage cost they pay and you never see. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹849 runs 6–8 weeks and then vacates the surface entirely; the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks and is the substantial version of the same argument.
What a kept gift actually costs them: a place on a shelf, three decisions on the day it arrives — where it goes, what moves to make room, and whether it is displayed when you visit — and a disposal taboo, because a gift cannot be given away while the giver is still in your life. None of these is visible to the person giving it. All of them are paid by the person receiving it.
Why home fragrance in particular: it is the category people enjoy and never get round to buying, because it is pleasant rather than necessary. Somebody who has everything has everything they decided on. This is a thing they never decided on. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
What do you gift someone who already has everything?
1. Read the phrase correctly. "Has everything" describes a house, not a personality. It means the shelves are full, the drawers are full, and the decision about what leaves has already been postponed several times. Nothing in that sentence is about what they like, which is why searching for a more unusual object — the standard instinct — solves a problem they do not have and adds to one they do.

2. Therefore give something that is consumed. This is the whole answer. A consumable is exempt from the storage economy entirely: it is used, it finishes, and the house returns to exactly the state it was in. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 takes a saucer's worth of surface for 6–8 weeks; the 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 does the same for 14–18 weeks and reads as a considerably more substantial gift.

3. Default to Mountain Breeze — ₹849 for 50ml, ₹1,349 for 130ml. Himalayan pine, real sage and Indian cedar, 9.4 on our strength scale and the driest, least sweet, least gendered composition in the range. It is the bottle we see gifted most often to people other gifts have failed, and one buyer's father — whom she describes as the hardest person to buy fragrance for — asked her for a second one.

4. If you want the gift to hedge itself, buy a duo. Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 or Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 are two 50ml bottles in two different registers. The recipient keeps the one that suits their room and you never have to find out which — the best-value shape in the range for a person you cannot read.

5. Accept that they might already own one. If so, change format rather than repeating yourself. A 12ml attar at ₹1,149–₹1,199 is something very few people have ever owned, though it is a personal fragrance and belongs to family and close friends only. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 is a 500ml ultrasonic machine covering 270–320 sq ft with three 15ml scents included — genuinely good, and honestly a kept object rather than a consumable.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: has-everything is a shelf problem, not a taste problem, so give something used up rather than kept. Mountain Breeze ₹849 for 50ml or ₹1,349 for 130ml; a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 if you want the gift to hedge itself; Evening Calm ₹799 at 8.9 if you cannot read them at all. There is no gift card, so the choice has to be made properly.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Himalayan pine, sage and cedar reed diffuser
The bottle for a full house
Mountain Breeze · pine, sage, Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml · ₹1,349 / 130ml
Himalayan pine, real sage and Indian cedar — at 9.4 the deepest woody we make and the driest thing in the range. It is the composition I recommend for recipients everybody else has given up on, because there is no sweetness to object to, no floral to hold a position about and no gendering at all: it reads as altitude rather than as perfume. The 130ml at ₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks, which makes it a substantial gift that still ends by disappearing. Six fibre reeds, refillable glass.

What a kept gift actually costs the person who receives it

The price of a permanent gift is not what you paid for it. It is a small tax the recipient pays quietly, for years, and never mentions. In a house with space that tax is negligible, which is why the ordinary rules of gifting work perfectly well for most people. In a full house it is real, and it is the entire reason this particular recipient is difficult to buy for. Here are the three components of it, none of which is visible from the outside, and all of which a consumable avoids completely.

1
COST ONE · THE SHELF
Space in a full house is the scarce resource, not money
Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799The reason this recipient is hard to buy for is not that they are fussy. It is that in their house, surface area has become more valuable than money — and gifts are almost always priced in the wrong currency. An expensive object and a cheap one occupy the same shelf. That is why raising your budget does not make the problem easier and frequently makes it worse, because a more expensive object is harder to move on from. Evening Calm takes a saucer's worth of console for two months and then the console is theirs again. Nothing was displaced to make room, and nothing has to be displaced when it ends.
The test: what has to move for this gift to have somewhere to live?
2
COST TWO · THE DECISIONS
Every object arrives with three questions attached
SOSA Fresh & Grounded reed diffuser duoFresh & Grounded duo₹1,548Where does it go. What comes off the shelf to make room. And is it out when the giver visits. Three decisions, all made on the day, all of them small and all of them the recipient's problem rather than yours. This is the part people underestimate: a gift is not just an object, it is a piece of admin. A consumable has an obvious place — a console, a bedside, a bathroom shelf — and it makes its own exit. A duo at ₹1,548 is the version of this I like best for a difficult recipient: two 50ml bottles, two registers, two rooms, and a decision that belongs to them rather than to you.
The test: how many small decisions does this gift hand to the person opening it?
3
COST THREE · THE DISPOSAL TABOO
A gift cannot be got rid of while the giver is still around
Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749This is the quiet one and the reason full houses stay full. A thing you bought yourself can be given away the moment it stops being useful. A thing somebody gave you cannot, not really, not while there is any chance they will come round and look for it. So gifts accumulate at a faster rate than possessions do, and the person who has everything is disproportionately full of things other people chose. A consumable is the only gift that escapes the taboo, because finishing is not the same as getting rid of. Morning Freshness runs its 6–8 weeks and ends without anybody making a decision about it, and both outcomes — they replace it or they do not — are clean.
The test: if they never used it again, could they remove it without it being an event?

Storage is the constraint, and it is invisible from where you are standing

The reason this search produces such poor results is that almost everybody answers it with rarity. Type the phrase anywhere and you will be shown novelty objects, gadgets and curiosities, all chosen on the assumption that the recipient's shelves are empty and their imagination is jaded. The truth is the reverse. Their imagination is fine; their shelves are not. An unusual object bought because it was unusual arrives with no relationship to the recipient's life, is admired for one evening, and becomes a storage decision for the next decade. It is the standard failure mode of this entire category and it is caused by a misreading of four words.

Once you see the constraint as storage, the requirements for a good gift become almost mechanical. It should be used rather than kept. It should have an obvious home while it is in use — a bedside, a console, a bathroom shelf — so nothing is displaced. It should end on its own without requiring a decision. And it should be in a category the recipient enjoys but never buys, because a full house is full of things the owner chose, and the interesting gap is always in the things they never got round to choosing.

Home fragrance satisfies all four for most adults, and the last one particularly. It is the definitive nice-to-have: pleasant, non-urgent, and permanently third on a list of two things, so it stays wanted and unowned indefinitely. It also has a property that no object category has, which is that it is not a thing at all but a condition of a room. A person who has everything has, by definition, run out of things — and nobody runs out of atmosphere, because atmosphere is not accumulated. That is the structural reason this works, and the reason a 130ml at ₹1,349 can be a properly substantial gift without adding a single item to a house that has no room for one.

What each gift asks of the recipient, honestly

Not "is this nice" but "what does this cost the person who receives it". Here is the SOSA range scored on exactly that, including the products that come off worst, because a table that flatters everything I sell is not a table.

The storage table
Shelf, decisions, disposal — what the gift asks for
Gift Kept or consumed Shelf cost Decisions it hands over How it ends Price
Mountain Breeze 130ml ★ Consumed — 14–18 weeks A corner of a console, temporarily One: which room Finishes. Nothing to store, nothing to dispose of ₹1,349
Mountain Breeze 50ml Consumed — 6–8 weeks A saucer's worth, temporarily One Finishes sooner; the standard gift size ₹849
A duo, 50ml × 2 Consumed — two rooms at once Two small footprints, temporarily Two, and both are pleasant ones Both finish; the hedge is built in ₹1,498–₹1,598
Evening Calm 50ml Consumed — 6–8 weeks A saucer's worth One Finishes. The safest bottle for someone you cannot read ₹799
12ml attar roll-on Consumed very slowly Almost none — it lives in a drawer One Still in use in a year. A personal fragrance, so family and close friends only ₹1,149–₹1,199

Three gifts that end by disappearing
The SOSA principle
A thing you bought yourself can be given away. A thing somebody gave you cannot — which is why full houses stay full, and why finishing is not the same as getting rid of.
The only gift that escapes the disposal taboo is the one that was always going to end.

When something permanent is genuinely the right gift

The consumable argument is strong and it is not universal, so here is where I would abandon it. A milestone deserves an object that stays. A wedding, a fiftieth birthday, a retirement, a first home — on those occasions the recipient will want something to look at in ten years, and a bottle that finishes in fourteen weeks is the wrong shape however good it is. A full house will find a shelf for a milestone; that is what milestones are for. If that is your occasion, buy the permanent thing, and buy the best one you can rather than the most surprising one.

Something edible deserves a fair hearing too, because it is the default this page implicitly displaces. Where a gift will be opened and shared on the spot — a house full of people, a celebration in progress, an office floor at four in the afternoon — food is genuinely the correct answer. It is consumed communally and immediately, it becomes everybody's rather than one person's, and it never turns into anybody's storage problem at all. Its weaknesses are specific to the private gift: it duplicates constantly, because it is what everyone reaches for, and it carries dietary exposure — restrictions, allergies, fasts, preferences — that you often cannot check without spoiling the surprise. A reed diffuser has neither problem, which is the quiet reason it holds up for a recipient you cannot read.

And the category error, stated plainly because it matters more than any sale: home fragrance is the wrong gift for a household mid-renovation, for anybody who has told you they dislike scent, and for a home with a newborn that has asked for nothing added. Those are three real situations in which the correct answer is to give something else entirely, and no argument on this page survives being wrong about the category.

Raising your budget does not make this easier. An expensive object and a cheap one occupy exactly the same shelf — and the expensive one is harder to move on from.

The complete edit — and the gap

In the order I would reach for them, with the honest gap in the last row. The relevant absence here: there is no SOSA gift card, no hamper and no curated gift set, so the classic escape for a difficult recipient — let them choose — is not something we can sell you. The duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 is the closest thing we have, and it is a real one.

Morning Freshness and Mountain Breeze together — two 50ml bottles in two registers, which is the shape I recommend most often for a recipient nobody can read. It solves the problem a single bottle cannot: the choice moves to the person who actually knows the house. A note from Sonal

I changed my mind about this question after a conversation with a customer who was buying for her mother-in-law. She said something I have quoted ever since: the problem isn't that she has good taste, it's that she has no room. Everything I had been recommending until then was an attempt to be more interesting, and none of it addressed the actual constraint. Once you know the constraint is space, the answer stops being a search and becomes a category decision.

It is also why I have never been defensive about our bottles finishing. People occasionally read the 6–8 weeks as a shortcoming and try to talk me into claiming more; I will not, because the number is honest and because on this page it is the entire point. The gift arrives, it does something pleasant every day in a room they use, and then it stops asking for anything at all. If they want it back, they know where it came from. If they do not, there is no object left over and no small awkwardness attached to it.

The one instinct I would push back on is cleverness. Every year somebody gives a genuinely eccentric present to a person who owns everything, and it is admired for one evening and stored for a decade. Specific beats eccentric without exception: the person with a study gets the cedar one, the household of two gets the duo, and the person you cannot read at all gets the soft one. Composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What do you gift someone who already has everything?
Something that gets used up. "Has everything" describes a full house rather than an unusual taste, so the constraint is storage and the category-correct answer is a consumable. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for 50ml or ₹1,349 for 130ml is the default — dry, ungendered, 9.4 on the SOSA strength scale — and a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 hedges itself by giving them two registers to choose between.
Why is buying something rarer the wrong instinct?
Because rarity solves a taste problem and the problem is storage. An unusual object bought because it was unusual has no relationship to the recipient's life; it is admired for an evening and then occupies exactly as much shelf as the ordinary thing it was meant to improve on. Worse, a more expensive object is harder to move on from, so raising your budget often makes the recipient's problem larger rather than smaller.
Isn't a consumable gift less special than something they keep?
For a milestone, yes — a wedding, a significant birthday or a retirement genuinely deserves an object that stays, and I would buy one. For an ordinary occasion and a full house the opposite is true: a kept gift carries a permanent cost in space, in small decisions and in the fact that it cannot be given away while you are still in their life. A gift that was always going to finish never becomes a burden.
What if they already own a reed diffuser?
Change format rather than repeating the idea. A 12ml attar roll-on at ₹1,149–₹1,199 is something very few people have ever owned — though it is a personal fragrance, so keep it for family and close friends. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 is a 500ml ultrasonic machine covering 270–320 sq ft with three 15ml scents included, and it is honestly a kept object rather than a consumable. A second reed in a different register is also perfectly reasonable: it simply goes in a second room.
Is there a SOSA gift card or hamper for a difficult recipient?
No — there is no SOSA gift card, no gift hamper and no curated gift set, so the "let them choose" route is not available from us. The nearest real hedge is a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598: two 50ml bottles in two different registers, so the recipient keeps whichever suits their rooms. A duo is two bottles rather than a curated box, and I would rather describe it accurately than dress it up.
