Release rate has to match the volume of air, not the floor plan
Every fragrance source releases a certain amount per hour, and every room contains a certain amount of air. Even distribution begins with those two numbers being in proportion, and most disappointments start with them being wildly out of proportion without anyone doing the sum. Work in volume: floor area multiplied by ceiling height, then divided by 35.3 for cubic metres. A 60 sq ft bathroom at 10 ft is 600 cubic feet, about 17 cubic metres. A 12 by 14 bedroom is 168 sq ft, so 1,680 cubic feet, about 48 cubic metres. A 200 sq ft room is 2,000 cubic feet, about 57. A 250 sq ft room is 2,500 cubic feet, about 71. The same bottle, releasing at the same unchanged rate, is being asked to do nearly three times the work in the bedroom that it does in the bathroom and four times in the larger room. Note what this condition is not: it is not about fragrance quality or concentration. A more expensive oil releases a more beautiful smell at the same physical rate. Rate against volume is an engineering question, and it has to be answered before anything else can help.

Condition two
Something has to mix it, and mixing costs energy
This is the condition nobody mentions and the one that decides everything. Fragrance released into still air does not spread on its own at any useful speed. Left purely to molecular diffusion, scent molecules take an extraordinarily long time to cross a room, which is why an unstirred spoon of sugar sits at the bottom of a cup of tea long after you have finished drinking it. What actually moves fragrance around a real room is bulk air movement: convection from warm bodies and appliances, currents from doors opening, a fan. And that movement is random rather than helpful. It carries scent away from the source in whatever direction it happens to be going, thinning it as it goes, which spreads the fragrance out but does not distribute it evenly. Even distribution needs directed, continuous mixing supplied at the source, so that fresh fragrance keeps entering moving air at a steady rate. That is precisely what an active diffuser is: a device whose entire purpose is to add the energy that a passive source cannot.

Condition three
There has to be a boundary, or you are scenting the outdoors slowly
The third condition belongs to your home rather than to any product, and it is the one you can improve for free. A scented volume of air only stays scented if it is not constantly being replaced. A closed bathroom door is the best boundary most homes have, which is why that room is so easy to scent. A bedroom with the door shut and the window closed is a decent one. A living room that opens into the dining area, which opens into the kitchen, which has an exhaust running, has almost no boundary at all - the fragrance is dispersing into a volume you never measured and a good part of it is being pulled outside. Before you buy any machine, walk your home and note where the nearest closed door actually is, because that tells you the true volume you are scenting. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. Ventilation and cleaning come first. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Does an air purifier or a fan count as the mixing energy?
They move air, so in principle they help with condition two, but they do nothing for condition one and they usually work against you. A fan mixes whatever fragrance is present, and if the source is a passive reed there is not enough being released per minute for the mixed result to stay above the level your nose notices, so the room reads as fainter rather than more even. A purifier is worse for this purpose, because many of them pass air through filters that will happily remove some of the fragrance you just paid for, and a purifier's job is to take things out of the air. The right way to think about it is that mixing must be supplied at the source and paired with an adequate release rate. That is why an active diffuser works and a reed plus a fan does not, even though both involve air movement.
Does the shape of the room change how even the scent can be?
Yes, more than most people expect, and it is worth looking at your own plan with this in mind. A squarish room with no partitions mixes well because air can circulate freely and there are no dead pockets. A long narrow room, an L-shaped living and dining space, or a room with a large piece of furniture cutting it in half will hold quiet zones behind those obstructions, because air does not turn corners as readily as we imagine. Alcoves, deep balconies with the door ajar and rooms with a mezzanine or double-height section all behave differently again, since warm scented air rises and can sit above head height. None of this changes the three conditions, it only changes where you should place the machine: near the middle of the volume you are trying to scent, at table height rather than floor level, and not tucked into a corner behind a sofa.
How high should the release rate be for my room?
Rather than a number, use the machine class, because the makers have already done the sizing. For a small bedroom, a study or a nursery, a Boond at Rs 899 with a Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299 is enough and can be run on its lowest setting. For an ordinary bedroom or a closed sitting room of roughly 48 to 71 cubic metres, a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 is the sensible middle. For a large room, or where you want long uninterrupted running without refilling, the 6 litre Megh at Rs 3,499 has the tank for it. For a genuinely connected open-plan volume, the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres. Start low in every case: it is far easier to increase a setting than to live with a room you have overdone, and a headache is a signal to turn it down, not to persist.
If I close the door and windows, can a reed diffuser meet all three conditions?
It gets much closer, and in a small enough room it effectively does, which is precisely why bathrooms work so well. Shut the door of a small study or a guest bedroom, leave a reed on the table, and after a few hours the volume is small enough and still enough that the gradient becomes shallow and the room reads as scented throughout. Try it: it costs nothing and it is genuinely satisfying. What you cannot do is scale that trick up. In a 48 cubic metre bedroom or a 71 cubic metre sitting room, sealing the room slows the losses without changing the release rate or supplying any mixing, so you get an improvement rather than a transformation. And there is a limit we would always respect: ventilation and fresh air come before fragrance in any room you sleep in, so please do not keep a room shut for the sake of a scent.
Is one big diffuser better than two small ones for even coverage?
It depends entirely on condition three. Within a single connected volume, one correctly sized machine placed near the middle usually gives a more even result than two smaller ones at opposite ends, because two sources create two peaks and the middle can still read thin, exactly as two reed diffusers do. If your space is divided by doors, the logic reverses completely: no machine can push fragrance through a closed door, so each closed room needs its own source, whether that is a small ultrasonic or simply a reed from Rs 749 for gentle ambience. The practical rule is one machine per connected volume, sized to that volume, and something separate for every room that has a door you actually shut.
