Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
You cannot fix it, and a gift is not an attempt to. That is the whole answer and it belongs in the first paragraph rather than the last. What a small parcel does is make you visible on a day when the person is mostly dealing with things alone - it says somebody stopped and thought about this. The things that genuinely help are practical and unglamorous: a lift, a meal, an hour of admin taken off them, sitting in the room. An object at ₹379 to ₹1,000 goes alongside those. It never goes instead of them.
SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
SOSA Bookshop candle · hand-poured in small batches ₹399 →
Small on purpose. The SOSA Bookshop candle, ₹399 - hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. It is a scent and an object to light, and it is not an attempt at a solution. It is the visible half of a gesture whose useful half is the Thursday you offered.
Quick answers — read this first
What do you give someone when you cannot help with their problem? Something small and consumable: a candle at ₹399, a 3ml attar from ₹379, or a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749. It is a signal that you are still here, not a solution. Pair it with an offer of something concrete - a lift, a meal, an hour of paperwork - because that is the part that does work.

Is sending a gift instead of helping a bad thing? It is if it replaces the help. A parcel is easier to send than an afternoon is to give, and both you and the person receiving it can usually tell which one happened. Send the object if you want to, but offer the specific practical thing as well, and name it rather than saying let me know if you need anything.

What if the problem is serious? Then the honest answer is that no object touches it, and this page gives no advice about anybody's health. Keep turning up, keep the gift small if you send one at all, and where somebody is dealing with more than a hard stretch the person who helps may need to be a professional rather than a friend with a parcel.
The short answer
Short answer: Send something small - a Rs 399 candle, a Rs 379 attar, a Rs 749 reed diffuser - and understand what it is doing: it makes you visible. The useful things are practical help and showing up, named specifically rather than offered vaguely. The object is a signal alongside them, never a substitute.
The pick: A candle at ₹399, sent with one specific offer of practical help written in your own words.
Why: It is small enough that nobody has to treat it as an event, it is used up rather than kept, and it leaves all the weight where it belongs - on what you actually do next.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
What can I give someone when I cannot fix the problem but want to show support?
Give something small, and give it alongside something concrete you are actually going to do. The object I would send most often is a candle at ₹399 - hand-poured, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours - because it is obviously a gesture and obviously not a solution, which is exactly the right register. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 works if you can name something they already wear. A 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749, lasting about 6 to 10 weeks, asks nothing at all of somebody with nothing spare to give. None of these does anything to the problem. A scent is a scent. What moves the needle is the specific offer next to it: I am free Thursday and I will drive you, I am bringing food on Sunday, send me the forms and I will fill them in. Do not send a parcel if it is standing in for a conversation you are avoiding - and if you are choosing between the larger gift and making the call, make the call. Where somebody is dealing with more than a hard stretch, the person who helps may need to be a professional. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
A gift is not help. It is evidence that somebody is still paying attention - which is a real and useful thing to provide, as long as you do not confuse it with the other one.
The honest shortlist: a ₹399 candle, a ₹379 attar, or a ₹749 reed diffuser - each sent with one specific offer of help attached.
SOSA candles from ₹399

What actually helps, and where an object fits among it

The reason this question is hard is that it contains two jobs and most guides only answer one. One job is to be useful, and there is a list for that which has nothing to do with shopping. The other is to be visible, which is what an object can genuinely do. These three sections separate them.

1
The first part
The things that actually help, none of which you buy
Be specific and take the decision away from them. Let me know if you need anything hands a tired person a task; I am free on Thursday, I will drive you and wait outside does not. Meals are the most reliable single item on the list - something that can go in a fridge, not something that needs hosting. Admin is the most undervalued: forms, calls, chasing, the twenty small jobs that pile up while somebody is dealing with a large one.

Then there is presence, which is the hardest and the one people substitute the most. Sitting in a room with somebody, saying very little, is worth more than almost anything in a shop. None of this requires you to know what to say, and none of it requires the problem to be fixable. It only requires you to turn up on a stated day.
Tip: Offer one named thing on one named day. Open-ended offers quietly become the other person's job.
2
The second part
What a small object does that a message does not
A text arrives among forty others and is read in three seconds. A parcel arrives at an address, at a moment nobody planned, and it takes up a small amount of physical space in a day - which is precisely why it reads as somebody having stopped. It is not more caring than a message. It is more visible than one, and on a long difficult stretch visible is worth something.

That is the entire case for it, and it sets the size. Anything at ₹379 to ₹1,000 makes the point. Anything beyond that starts making a different point, one about how serious you have decided the situation is, and hands the recipient a reaction to perform. A ₹399 candle is legible as I thought about you. A large parcel is legible as I have decided this is a crisis, which may not be their reading of it.
3
The third part
When not to send anything at all
There are three cases. The first: if the parcel is standing in for a conversation you have been putting off, it will not work and you will know. Buying is easier than finding words for something you cannot solve, and a gift sent for that reason tends to end the exchange rather than open it. The second: if you do not know the person well enough to know whether a parcel arriving at their home is welcome at all right now, a message is the better instrument.

The third is the one this page takes most seriously. Where somebody is dealing with something well beyond a hard stretch, an object is not the register at all, no page on a fragrance website is the right place to look for guidance, and the person who helps may need to be a professional. Nothing here is advice about anybody's health and nothing here treats anything. In that case the useful things are the same unglamorous ones: turn up, keep turning up, and stay reachable.
Tip: If you would feel relieved once the parcel was sent, that is the sign it is doing the wrong job.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
How to do this properly in ten minutes
  1. Name one practical thing you will do, on one specific day. Say it plainly.
  2. Then, if you want to, send something small: Rs 379 to Rs 1,000, no higher.
  3. Pick what asks least of them: a reed diffuser, or a Rs 399 candle.
  4. Send your own words separately. No card goes in the parcel.
The SOSA principle
An object cannot carry a problem, and it was never asked to. What it carries is one sentence - somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours - which is small, true, and worth sending.
Everything else you want to do for that person happens in a car, a kitchen or a room, and none of it is for sale.

If you are sending something, this is the shortlist

If you are sending something, the shortlist is short. A candle - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks at ₹399 each, about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours - is the clearest version of a gesture that is not pretending to be a solution. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 asks literally nothing: no flame, no socket, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks of doing its job on a shelf, which is the right answer for somebody with no spare attention at all and for any home where a flame is not allowed. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 is the smallest serious fragrance gift there is and the one that reads as chosen, if you can name something they already wear. The Woodenwick candles at ₹999 and the reed duo sets from ₹1,498 exist, and on this page they are usually the wrong call.

The SOSA gift edit
Four responses, honestly ranked by what they actually do
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Practical help, named and dated · ₹0 First because it is the only thing on this list that changes anything. A lift on a stated day, food that goes in a fridge, an hour of forms taken off them, an evening of sitting in the room. It costs nothing and it is the hardest to give, which is exactly why a parcel is so tempting. It fails only where what is needed is beyond a friend, and there the right person may be a professional.
A candle · ₹399 to ₹999 The clearest small signal. ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. It is obviously a gesture, it is used up, and it asks one thing - that it be lit. It fails in a rented room or a shared flat where an open flame is not allowed, and it fails if you send it instead of the thing in row one.
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 The one that asks absolutely nothing of the person: no flame, no socket, nothing remembered, about 6 to 10 weeks. Right when somebody is completely out of spare attention, and right when you are buying for a room rather than for a taste you would have to guess. It fails on weight if ₹749 is more than your friendship usually carries unannounced.
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 Alcohol-free oil, rolled on rather than sprayed - Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani are properly different from one another. It reads as chosen, which matters when the point is to be visible. It fails when you are guessing at a taste; a wrong scent on a hard month gets worn once out of politeness and then quietly shelved.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

On size, go one step smaller than the version you first pictured. A single candle rather than the duo, the 3ml rather than the 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, the 50ml reed rather than the 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349. The logic is not thrift. A person in the middle of something is short of energy, and a large parcel spends some of it - it has to be opened, understood, displayed and answered for. Small is easier to receive, and being easy to receive is the entire job of a gift whose purpose is to say I am still here. Put the extra effort into the sentence and into the Thursday you promised, because SOSA encloses no printed card and the words are yours to send anyway.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
  • Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.

A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

What do you send someone when there is nothing you can do?
Something small and consumable - a candle at Rs 399, a 3ml attar at Rs 379, or a reed diffuser at Rs 749 - and one specific offer of practical help written in your own words. The object makes you visible. The offer is the part that does something. Send both, and do not let the first one replace the second.
Is it better to send money or practical help instead of a gift?
Practical help is usually the most useful thing on the list, and it is free: a lift on a named day, food that goes in a fridge, an hour of paperwork taken off them. Whether money is appropriate depends entirely on the relationship, and that is not something a fragrance page can answer for you.
How much should I spend when I just want to show support?
Rs 379 to Rs 1,000. Beyond that the parcel starts making a statement about how serious you have decided things are, and asks the person to respond to that on top of everything else. A Rs 399 candle says you were thinking about them just as clearly as anything four times the price.
Should I say something about the problem in my message?
Name it plainly rather than writing around it, and then ask nothing. No reply needed, no cheerfulness required, no questions they would have to answer. SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note service, so the message goes separately from you, which is the right way round anyway.
What if the situation is more than a hard week?
Then no object is the answer and no page on a fragrance website should pretend otherwise. Keep turning up, keep in touch, and understand that the person who helps may need to be a professional. If you still want to send something, keep it very small and let it be nothing more than a signal that you are there.

Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent and does not remove, neutralise or purify odour, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial, air-purifying or wellbeing claim. No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
