Risk is measured in door openings and pressure, not in metres
This is the right question to ask before installing anything in a textile business, and the answer turns on a distinction most people have never had reason to make: risk here is a function of air paths and pressure, not of separation in metres. Start with why fabric is the issue at all. Woven and knitted cloth presents an enormous internal surface area relative to its mass - fibre surfaces, yarn interstices, the loft inside a folded bolt - and that structure takes up ambient volatile compounds readily and releases them slowly, over weeks. Everybody in this trade knows the consequence from experience: stock stored near a canteen smells of the canteen, cloth that sat through a closed monsoon in a damp godown carries that character for months, fabric stored beside a generator or a solvent store picks it up. The absorption is a property of textiles, not a defect of particular goods, and it means your storage conditions are already a quality control question before anybody mentions fragrance. Now the part that matters. Owners instinctively reason about distance: the diffuser is at reception, the godown is at the back of the building or on another floor, therefore the stock is safe. Air does not work that way. It moves along paths and follows pressure differences, and there are three routes that will deliver an office register to storage no matter how far apart they look on a plan. The first is shared ductwork. If the same air-handling unit serves both areas, they are one zone regardless of the walls between them, and the register will be distributed to every outlet on that system. This is the single strongest reason we never, under any circumstances, inject fragrance into ductwork - it dissolves every boundary in a building at once, and in a textile business it puts your register directly into your stock. Any supplier proposing duct dosing in a building that stores fabric should be declined on that basis alone. The second is a shared return path. Even where supply is local, many buildings return air through a common ceiling void, and that void connects rooms whose doors are firmly shut. You cannot see it and it does not appear on a layout drawing, so it has to be asked about or tested: hold the doors closed for an hour on a day when the system has been running since morning, then stand in the storage area and check whether anything from the front is present. The third is pressure, and it is the one most often missed. If your office area runs at a positive pressure relative to the storage area - which is common, because offices are cooled and supplied while godowns often are not - then every time the connecting door opens, office air moves inward. In a working business that door opens dozens of times a day: staff, trolleys, cartons, samples, the tea round. A door that is open thirty times an hour is not a boundary; it is a gap with hinges. The corollary is the useful half. A closed, self-closing door two metres from your reception protects the stock behind it completely, provided the pressure agrees, while thirty metres of open mezzanine protects nothing at all. Coverage stops at the first closed door, and that is a statement about doors, not about distance. So the plan for a building with office and storage under one roof is short. Put the register only in a zone that is separated from storage by a door that actually closes and is not propped in a hot afternoon. Confirm that storage is not downstream of that zone on a shared return, and that the two are not on one air handler. Arrange the pressure so the storage side is neutral or slightly positive relative to the office side, so that when the door opens the flow runs outward rather than inward - which usually means a modest supply of filtered outdoor air to the storage side, and which has the useful side effect of helping with monsoon humidity. Add an airlock or a short lobby between the two if the layout allows even a two-metre buffer, because two doors that are rarely open together are worth far more than one good door. Then identify which stock is most exposed, because it is not the stock nearest the diffuser. It is the stock nearest the door that opens most often, which in almost every warehouse is the fast-moving stock kept closest to the exit for convenience - which is to say the pieces going out to buyers this week. That is the opposite of what you would want, and it is easily fixed: put finished goods awaiting despatch, and anything sample-related, furthest from the connecting door and behind closed-front storage, and keep slow-moving stock near the door instead. Now the audit, which is the most useful thing on this page because it replaces argument with evidence. Test your goods the way your buyer will. Take a piece from a rack, seal it in a courier bag or a polythene sample bag for four or five days - a sealed bag concentrates rather than disperses, which is exactly what happens in transit - and then open it in a neutral room, ideally somebody else's office or a room in your home with no diffuser, at the start of the day rather than the end. Have a second person open it without being told what you are testing for. If it smells of anything other than cloth, you have your answer, and you have it before a buyer in Dubai, Lagos, Dhaka or Milan has it. Run the same test on a piece from deep storage and on a piece from near the connecting door, and the comparison will tell you whether the path is pressure or ducting. Do it once a quarter. This test is also how you check the two other things that contaminate fabric far more often than any diffuser: mildew from a heavily humid Tapi monsoon in a closed godown, and residual process chemistry from cloth that was packed before it had finished releasing. For the first, measure relative humidity with a cheap hygrometer before doing anything - sustained high humidity in still air with stacks packed tight on a floor is the condition that produces mildew character, and the fix is dehumidification, circulation, pallets off the floor, gaps between stacks and stock rotation, none of which is fragrance. For the second, put a named airing step with a minimum duration back into the production plan, because curing and flash-off hours are the first thing taken when an order runs late, and a sealed bag concentrates whatever had not been released. The rest of the zoning follows the rule that governs this whole trade: if cloth enters a room, that room gets nothing. Sample rooms, display racks, selection tables, godowns, cutting, packing and production floors get nothing at all. Textile buyers smell fabric deliberately as part of assessment, checking for finishing chemistry, sizing, solvent and mildew, and a fragrant sample removes that check - with the conclusion a buyer draws about why cloth has been perfumed never being the charitable one. Chemical and dye stores get nothing. Staff work areas get nothing, because people are there ten hours a day and cannot leave over the air. Corridors get nothing, because they are mixing zones where two registers would combine into a third nobody chose. Pantries and sanitary areas need extraction rather than fragrance. Covered and semi-outdoor space - loading bays, yard canopies, covered walkways - cannot hold a register at all at any price, so no supplier should quote you for them. What remains is a visitor entrance or waiting area with no cloth in it, on a low setting and short timer cycles matched to real arrival hours. Reeds are subject to exactly the same rule and people forget it: a reed diffuser is a continuous passive source, so a reed on a shelf at the end of a rack is a source sitting next to absorbent material, and the fact that it is silent and unpowered does not make it neutral. Keep reeds in the entrance zone only.
