There are only three things you can change about the sticks in a reed diffuser: how thick they are, how many there are, and how long they are. It is worth knowing exactly what each one does, because two of them are genuinely useful levers and the third is mostly decoration - and because all three of them pull the same lever. Every one of them adjusts the rate at which oil leaves the bottle. Not one of them adjusts the distance the fragrance travels, and the reason why is the most useful thing on this page.
Quick answers — read this first
Do thicker reeds make a diffuser stronger? Thicker and more porous reeds do increase the rate, yes. A reed works by capillary action: oil is drawn up through tiny channels in the fibre, and a stick with a larger cross-section and more open structure carries more oil per hour to the exposed length above the neck of the bottle. Natural rattan is more porous than a tight synthetic fibre, and a fatter stick delivers more than a slim one. So the air beside the bottle reads richer and the bottle empties sooner. What thickness cannot do is push the fragrance anywhere. It widens the tap; it does not add a fan. That is why swapping to thicker reeds is a sensible move when the bottle feels too quiet up close and a pointless one when the problem is that you cannot smell it across the room.
Does the length of a reed diffuser stick matter? Much less than people assume, because only the part above the neck of the bottle actually evaporates. Length below the oil line is just reservoir contact and it does nothing extra once the stick is drawing freely. Length above the neck does count a little, since a longer exposed section carries more wet surface, but there is a practical ceiling: a very tall stick has to lift oil further against gravity, so the top can end up dry while the bottom is soaked. In real homes the height of the reed is mostly about proportion and how the bottle looks on your console. If someone tells you longer reeds will get the fragrance to the other side of the room, they are describing something a passive object cannot do.
If none of that increases reach, what actually does? Adding energy to the system, which means an active diffuser. That is the entire difference between a bottle waiting for the room's air to collect its fragrance and a machine putting fragrance into the room's air. For one ordinary bedroom the honest and cheaper first upgrade is an ultrasonic: Boond Rs 899, Sukoon Rs 1,899 or Megh Rs 3,499 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299, with the fair trade-off that it mixes oil with water, adds humidity, can dilute the scent and can leave white dust in hard-water areas. For strong, undiluted scent in the personal space you occupy, the waterless cordless SOSA Safar is Rs 3,999. For a large or connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: Thickness and porosity set how fast oil is drawn up, so thicker or more open reeds evaporate faster. Number of reeds sets how much total wet surface is exposed above the neck of the bottle, so more sticks evaporate faster still. Length is largely cosmetic, because only the section above the neck evaporates and the part below the oil line does nothing extra. All three change the rate at the source and the speed at which a Rs 749 bottle empties. None of them changes distance, because distance is decided by air movement and nothing in a reed diffuser moves air. For a whole room, an ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299; for strong scent where you sit, the waterless SOSA Safar Rs 3,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room evenly; the SOSA Safar (₹3,999, waterless and cordless, three hotel-inspired blends included) when you want it strong and true in the space you sit in; the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large or open-plan room.

Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
Thicker reeds, more reeds, longer reeds - what does each one actually change?
Take them one at a time, then look at what they have in common. 1. Thicker or more porous reeds: a wider tap. Oil climbs through the fibre by capillary action, so a stick with a bigger cross-section and a more open structure delivers more oil per hour to the exposed length. Natural rattan draws more freely than a tight synthetic fibre. The air beside the bottle gets richer and the bottle empties sooner. 2. More reeds: more total wet surface. Evaporation happens from the surface above the neck, so doubling the sticks roughly doubles the surface offering fragrance to the air. Again the near field gets stronger, again the ₹749 bottle finishes sooner. 3. Longer reeds: mostly proportion. The part below the oil line contributes nothing once the stick is drawing freely, so extra length there is decorative. Extra length above the neck adds a little wet surface, but a very tall reed has to lift oil further against gravity, so the top can end up dry. Height is really about how the bottle looks on your console. What all three share. Every one of them is a control on the RATE - how quickly oil turns into airborne fragrance in the few feet around the bottle. Not one of them is a control on the DISTANCE, because distance belongs to air movement, and a reed diffuser has no way to move air. So use reeds to set intensity at the source, keep the reed from ₹749 where you actually sit or stand near it, and if the wish is a room that smells of it, that is an active Boond ₹899 or Sukoon ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299, or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for the space you occupy. Three reed variables, examined one at a time
One variable per section, then the single sentence that applies to all three.
Why this happens in your room
Two real levers, one decorative one, and a ceiling all three share
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
A reed is a bundle of tiny channels, and oil moves up those channels by capillary action, the same effect that pulls tea up a sugar cube. Two things decide how much arrives at the top per hour: how many channels there are, which is a function of the stick's cross-section, and how open they are, which is a function of the material. Natural rattan is genuinely porous and draws freely. Tightly extruded synthetic fibre draws more slowly and is often chosen for exactly that reason, because it makes a fragrance last. So a thicker natural stick delivers more oil to the exposed length than a slim synthetic one, the air right beside the bottle reads richer, and the bottle finishes sooner. This is a real and useful lever if your complaint is that the bottle is too quiet even when you are standing next to it. It is the wrong lever entirely if your complaint is that the bed on the other side of the room smells of nothing, because a wider tap fills the same basin faster - it does not carry the water anywhere new.
Tip: thickness is a tap setting: it decides how fast oil arrives, never where the fragrance ends up.
2
Variable two
Count: total wet surface, and nothing more
The number of reeds is the lever most people reach for first, and it does work in the way they expect - up to a point they usually do not expect. Evaporation happens from the damp surface of the sticks standing above the neck of the bottle, so the honest way to think about reed count is as total exposed wet area. Four reeds present a certain area to the air; eight present roughly twice as much, so roughly twice as much fragrance enters the air per hour. The room beside the bottle is measurably stronger, and that is not a placebo. But look at what the sentence actually said: twice as much fragrance enters the air per hour, in the same place. The bottle is now emptying at roughly twice the pace, so a ₹749 diffuser that would have run toward the ten-week end of the usual 6 to 10 weeks is heading for the short end instead. And the far corner of the room has gained nothing, because the extra fragrance has no more ability to travel than the original amount did. Count is an intensity dial that is also a spending dial.
3
Variable three
Length: mostly how it looks on the shelf
Length is the variable that sells the most and changes the least. Split the stick at the neck of the bottle. Everything below the oil line is doing one job, which is staying in contact with the reservoir, and once it is doing that, extra length there adds nothing at all - a reed with six inches submerged does not draw more than one with three inches submerged. Everything above the neck is the part that evaporates, and here length does count a little, because a longer exposed section carries more wet surface. But there is a practical ceiling that nobody mentions: capillary action has to lift oil against gravity, and past a certain height the top of the stick simply cannot stay wet, so you end up with a tall dry decorative tip and no extra fragrance. In real homes, reed length is a question of proportion - what looks right beside a lamp on a console, what does not look top-heavy on a narrow bathroom shelf. Choose it on your eye. If the far side of the room is the problem, that is not solved by any stick and it is honestly solved by an active diffuser or the waterless Safar.
Tip: only the wet surface above the neck evaporates - which is why length is a design decision far more than a fragrance one.
The SOSA principle
All three reed variables are settings on the same dial. They set how fast oil becomes air. Distance is a different dial, and a reed diffuser does not have it.
Thickness widens the tap, count adds surface, length adjusts proportion - and reach belongs to air movement, which no passive bottle supplies.

The ladder from passive to active, in order - tap any image to see it on the store
Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

You can change the thickness, the number and the length. There is no stick in the world that changes the distance.

The SOSA edit, passive to active
Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.

Which one matches what you actually want - ambience near the bottle, a whole room, or strong scent where you sit
No power, no noise, nothing to fail. Still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml from ₹1,249
The honest first upgrade for a whole room, and cheaper than the Safar. Runs the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799). It mixes oil with water, so it adds humidity, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust
Active and waterless · the personal space you occupy
Cordless, rechargeable 2000 mAh, cold diffusion of pure undiluted oil: no water, no dilution, no white dust. SOSA lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, and work-from-home. Ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends. A personal-space diffuser with strong near-field projection, not a whole-room machine
Waterless cold-air to approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, Bluetooth app and timer, four hotel-inspired blends included. The genuine whole-space answer, and honestly oversized for a small bedroom
₹11,999
Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.
Frequently asked questions
Are natural rattan reeds better than the synthetic fibre ones?
They are different rather than better, and the difference is rate. Natural rattan has open porous channels and draws oil quickly, so it tends to give a livelier scent at the source and a shorter bottle life. Tightly made synthetic fibre reeds draw more slowly and steadily, which many people prefer because the fragrance is more even week to week and the bottle lasts longer. Neither is a quality judgement and neither changes how far the fragrance travels. Choose rattan if you want more presence beside the bottle and are happy to replace sooner; choose fibre if you want steadiness. What we would gently discourage is switching materials in the hope of solving a room-coverage complaint, because both materials are passive and both put fragrance into the same few feet of air. Send us a note on WhatsApp describing what you are actually hoping for and we will tell you whether reeds are the right thing to be changing at all.
How many reeds should I actually put in?
Start with about half of what comes in the pack and adjust by what you smell, not by what looks generous. Fewer sticks in a small enclosed room such as a bathroom, a powder room or a study, because those rooms concentrate scent naturally and are easy to overdo. More sticks in a larger or airier room, or in winter when a cool room slows evaporation. The right number is the one where you notice the fragrance pleasantly when you are near the bottle and stop noticing it after a few minutes, which is how a well-dosed room should behave. If anyone in the house finds it too much, take sticks out rather than debating it, and that goes double in a bedroom. Remember what you are adjusting, though: reed count sets intensity at the source and how fast a Rs 749 bottle empties. It does not set coverage, and adding sticks to reach a far corner is spending oil on a distance problem.
Can I use reeds from another bottle or a different brand in my SOSA diffuser?
Physically yes, and it can be a perfectly reasonable thing to do if you have clean spare sticks and yours have clogged. Two practical cautions. First, reeds hold their previous fragrance in the fibre, so a stick that has been sitting in a lavender oil will carry some of that into a citrus bottle and give you a muddled result for a while; use genuinely unused reeds if you can. Second, thickness and material change the rate, so a set of much thicker rattan sticks in the same bottle will make the fragrance livelier and the bottle shorter-lived than the reeds we supplied, which may or may not be what you want. Neither caution has anything to do with reach. If you are swapping reeds because the room does not smell of it, the swap will not deliver that, and we would rather tell you now than have you buy sticks twice.
Would a wider bottle neck with more reeds work better than a tall narrow one?
It changes the rate a little and it is worth understanding why. A wider neck lets you stand more sticks with a little air between them, and air circulating around each stick helps evaporation, whereas reeds crammed tightly together partly shelter one another. A wider opening also exposes a little more of the oil surface itself, which contributes a small amount of evaporation on its own. So yes, a wide-necked bottle with well-spaced reeds tends to read livelier than a tall narrow one with the sticks pressed together, and it will empty sooner for the same reason. It is a genuine effect and a small one. It belongs firmly in the same category as everything else on this page: a control over how much fragrance enters the air near the bottle, with no influence whatsoever on how far that fragrance gets before it thins out.
So is there any reed change that would help me smell it from across the room?
No, and that is the honest and most useful answer we can give you. Every reed variable - thickness, porosity, count, length, spacing, how often you flip them - adjusts how quickly oil becomes airborne fragrance in the space immediately around the bottle. Distance is governed by something else entirely: whether any energy is moving that air. In a passive system nothing is, so concentration is highest at the source and falls away from it no matter how much you release. What changes the outcome is an active diffuser, and the ladder is straightforward. For a single ordinary bedroom, an ultrasonic Boond at Rs 899 or Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with a water-based Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299, accepting added humidity, some dilution and possible white dust in hard-water areas. For strong undiluted scent in the space you personally occupy, the waterless Safar at Rs 3,999. For a large or connected open-plan space, the Vaayu at Rs 11,999.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.
Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
