Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
You are standing between two versions of the same intention: something small you could send today, or something substantial that feels like it matches how much you care. The difference that matters is not price - it is that one of them can be repeated and the other cannot. A small gesture can arrive three times across a difficult stretch without ever becoming a thing. A premium gift happens once, is received as an event, and asks for a response. This page sets both out honestly and names the situations where the larger one genuinely wins, which are fewer than you would like.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
SOSA Cozy Corner candle · hand-poured in small batches ₹399 →
The side of this comparison that wins most often, and for one specific reason. The SOSA Cozy Corner candle, ₹399 - hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. It is small enough that you could send another one in six weeks without either of you treating it as a gesture, and that repeatability is the whole advantage over anything at ₹3,999.
Quick answers — read this first
Should I send a small gift or an expensive one to somebody having a hard time? Small, in most cases, and more than once. A candle at ₹399 or a 3ml attar at ₹379 can be sent again six weeks later without it being strange. A ₹3,999 gift can only happen once and arrives as an event the person has to respond to, usually on a day they have nothing spare.

When is the premium gift actually the right call? When it is practical rather than symbolic. A 300ml reed refill at ₹2,399 for somebody already running reeds. SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for somebody who genuinely drives or travels for hours. A duo set at ₹1,498 for somebody who has just moved into an empty flat. In each of those the object fits a situation that already exists.

Does a bigger gift show more care? It shows more spending. Care reads through accuracy and repetition, not size - knowing the scent family they wear, or still sending something in week nine when everybody else stopped in week one. And nothing sent in a parcel substitutes for ringing them; where somebody is dealing with more than a hard stretch, the person who helps may need to be a professional.
The short answer
Short answer: Send the small gesture, and send it more than once. A Rs 399 candle or a Rs 379 attar can be repeated across a long difficult stretch; a Rs 3,999 gift happens once and has to be answered. The premium gift is right only when it is practical rather than symbolic: a refill they are running out of, a machine for somebody who really does drive for hours, or a duo set for an empty new flat.
The pick: The small gesture, repeated: a candle at ₹399 now, a 3ml attar at ₹379 in six weeks.
Why: It can arrive a second and a third time without becoming an occasion, which means the attention keeps coming after everybody else has stopped - and that is the part that is actually scarce.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
Small gesture or premium gift - which is better when somebody is having a difficult time?
The small gesture, and the reason is repeatability rather than money. A candle at ₹399 burning about 15 to 18 hours, or a 3ml attar at ₹379, can be sent in week two and again in week eight and it never becomes a thing either of you has to discuss. A premium gift cannot do that. It happens once, it is received as an event, it has to be acknowledged properly, and on a bad day that acknowledgement is work. It also sets a level: the next time you want to send something, ₹399 will look like a step down, which is a trap you have built for yourself. The larger gift is genuinely right in three cases, and they are all practical rather than symbolic. If they already run a SOSA reed and are near the end, a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is a top-up and reads as one. If they genuinely drive or travel for hours, SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion for a car or a travel bag - fits a situation that already exists. If they have just moved into an empty flat, a 50ml reed duo at ₹1,498 furnishes two rooms. Outside those, go small. And none of it does anything about the difficulty itself: a scent is a scent, the parcel belongs alongside ringing them and never instead of it, and where somebody needs more than a hard week acknowledged, that person may need to be a professional. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
A small gift can be sent again. That single property beats every advantage the expensive one has, because a difficult stretch is long and attention is the thing that runs out first.
The side of this argument that wins most of the time: a candle at ₹399, small enough that you could send another one in six weeks.
SOSA candles from ₹399

The three differences that actually separate the two

Both options are honest gifts and neither is a mistake in the abstract. What separates them is how they behave once they arrive - how they can be repeated, what they ask of the person opening them, and whether the object fits a real situation or stands in for a feeling. Three differences settle it.

1
The first difference
One can be repeated. The other sets a ceiling.
A ₹399 candle sent in week two can be followed by a ₹379 attar in week eight and a ₹749 reed in week fourteen, and at no point does either of you have to treat any of it as significant. That is the whole advantage, and it is a large one, because hard periods are long. Everybody is attentive in the first fortnight. Very few people are still sending anything in the third month, which is often when the person is most aware of having been quietly left to it.

The premium gift forecloses that. Once you have sent ₹3,999, a ₹399 candle in week eight reads as a downgrade rather than as a second kindness - not because the other person is ungrateful, but because you will feel it and probably will not send it. The expensive gift is a single large payment; the small one is a standing order you can stop at any time.
Tip: Choose the version you could send again without it needing an explanation.
2
The second difference
A premium gift requires a response. A small one does not.
This is the part that gift guides never mention because it is unflattering to the seller. Receiving something expensive is not free. It has to be opened with the right face, thanked for properly and usually acknowledged again later, and somewhere in the background sits the quiet arithmetic of reciprocity: at some point something of similar size has to go the other way. On an ordinary week that is a minor social cost. On a week where somebody is barely managing the basics, it is another item on a list they did not write.

A small gift has almost none of that. A candle at ₹399 gets a message with two words in it and the transaction is closed. That asymmetry is the strongest practical argument in this whole comparison, and it is why the correct move when you feel most helpless is usually to go down in size rather than up.
3
The third difference
Practical gifts survive the size test. Symbolic ones do not.
There is a clean test for when the larger gift is right, and it is not about the relationship. Ask: does this object fit a situation the person already has? They drive four hours a day and the car smells of nothing - Safar at ₹3,999 fits that, and it is waterless, cordless and rechargeable cold-diffusion made for exactly that use. They run a reed all year and the bottle is nearly empty - the ₹2,399 300ml refill fits. They have moved into a flat with nothing in it - a duo set at ₹1,498 fits.

If instead the object is standing in for how much you care, the size is a symbol, and symbols should be small. A big symbol is legible as a big symbol: the recipient reads it correctly as you are worried about me, which is a heavier thing to be handed than a candle. And if the gift is practical, mention the running costs rather than leaving them as a surprise - Safar runs nebuliser oil at ₹1,049 for 100gm and ₹1,849 for 300gm, and the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into it.
Tip: Practical justifies size. Feelings do not, and feelings are what usually push the number up.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
How to choose between the two in about three minutes
  1. Ask if the gift is practical or symbolic. Symbolic should always stay small.
  2. Pick something you could send again in six weeks without it being strange.
  3. If you want to spend more, spend it three times rather than all at once.
  4. Ring them as well. The parcel never goes in place of the person.
The SOSA principle
The premium gift is a statement and the small one is a habit. Statements are answered once; habits keep somebody company through the months when everybody else has gone quiet.
Which is why the right answer here is usually the cheaper object sent twice, not the dearer one sent once.

What each side of the choice looks like at SOSA

What each side looks like in practice. The small gesture: a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 in Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani or Nawaab; a candle at ₹399 in Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours; car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price; a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 running about 6 to 10 weeks. The premium gift: a reed duo set at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 in 50ml x 2, or ₹2,498 to ₹2,598 in 130ml x 2; the Attar Trio at ₹1,859 in 6ml or ₹3,189 in 12ml; a reed refill at ₹2,399 for 300ml or ₹3,499 for 500ml; SOSA Safar at ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is a machine for a large open home or a business and is not a gift for a hard month at all.

The SOSA gift edit
Head to head, and where each one fails
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
A small gesture, sent once · ₹379 to ₹699 A candle at ₹399, a 3ml attar at ₹379, a two-candle duo at ₹699. Closes in one exchange: opened, a short message back, done. Right for almost everybody, and especially for people who do not usually send each other things. It fails when the person has a specific practical need you know about and are ignoring in order to stay within a rule.
A small gesture, repeated · ₹399 then ₹379 then ₹749 The strongest version of the whole page. Three arrivals across three months, ₹1,527 in total, and the third one lands in the stretch where the attention has usually stopped. Right when the difficulty is long rather than sharp. It fails if you will not actually follow through - a plan you abandon in week five is worse than one honest gift.
A practical premium gift · ₹1,498 to ₹3,999 A duo set for an empty new flat, a ₹2,399 refill for somebody running out, Safar at ₹3,999 for somebody who really does drive for hours. Right where the object fits a situation that already exists, because then the price never has to be interpreted. It fails when the practicality is invented to justify the number, which is easy to do and obvious from the outside.
A symbolic premium gift · any price, no reason The version to avoid. Large, unprompted, chosen because it felt proportionate to how much you care. It is read accurately as concern, it obliges a response on a day with nothing spare, and it makes every smaller thing afterwards look like a retreat. If this is the one you were about to buy, the same money split into three small parcels does more, and a phone call does more than both.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

One thing neither column contains, and it belongs at the end because it is the most useful sentence here. The gift is not the intervention. Whatever somebody is going through, the object arriving does not touch it - a scent is a scent, and a page claiming otherwise is selling something it does not have. What the parcel does is carry a single fact: somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That fact is worth sending, at ₹399 or at ₹3,999, and it is worth exactly the same at both. The things that are not interchangeable are the call, the visit and the hour spent sitting there, and where the difficulty runs deeper than a hard stretch, the person who helps may need to be a professional. If you are choosing between the bigger parcel and making the call, make the call, and send the small thing too if you want to.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The most useful gift I ever watched somebody send was a ₹399 candle that turned up three times over four months. Nothing about it was impressive. That was the point of it.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear from ₹1,055

SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion from ₹1,498

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a small gift or an expensive gift better when somebody is having a hard time?
A small one, usually, and sent more than once. A Rs 399 candle or a Rs 379 attar can arrive again six weeks later without becoming an occasion. An expensive gift happens once, is received as an event, and has to be acknowledged properly, which is work on a day when somebody has nothing spare.
When is a premium gift actually the right choice?
When it is practical rather than symbolic. A 300ml reed refill at Rs 2,399 for somebody already running a SOSA reed. SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 for somebody who genuinely drives or travels for hours. A reed duo set at Rs 1,498 for somebody who has just moved into an empty flat. In each case the object fits a situation that already exists, so the price never has to be interpreted.
Will a small gift look cheap?
Only if the gift is incomplete. A Rs 379 attar and a Rs 399 candle are whole objects. What looks thin is something that cannot be used on its own, such as wax melts at Rs 499 without the Rs 599 ceramic burner, or a Rs 299 Hotel Collection bottle sent to somebody who has no ultrasonic machine. Complete and small is fine. Incomplete at any price is not.
Can I send the same thing twice?
Yes, and it is one of the better moves available. Sending a second candle in week eight is not unimaginative, it is a sign that the attention did not stop when everybody else's did. If you would rather vary it, a candle at Rs 399, then a 3ml attar at Rs 379, then a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 covers three months for Rs 1,527.
Can SOSA tell me which side of this I am on?
Yes. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with who the person is to you, what is going on if you want to say, whether they drive, what their home is like and what you had in mind to spend. You will get one recommendation rather than a list, including the times the honest answer is the smaller product, or a call instead of a parcel.

Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent and does not remove, neutralise or purify odour, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial, air-purifying or wellbeing claim. No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by.
