Founder Diaries · Commercial Scent Marketing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 10 min read Updated August 2026
This idea comes from hotels, where it is real and works. A lobby, a spa corridor and a club lounge are often scented differently on purpose, and guests experience the changes as a sequence rather than a collision. Brokers hear that and reasonably ask whether the entrance of a listing should get its own register - something more present at the door, something quieter inside. The honest answer is no, and the reason is arithmetic rather than taste: a buyer crosses from your doormat to the middle of the living room in about four seconds, which is not enough distance or time for two fragrances to read as two places. It reads as two air fresheners.
Quick answers — read this first
Should the entrance of a property be scented differently from the rest? No, in an apartment. The technique is borrowed from hotels, where separate zones are genuinely separated - forty metres of corridor, a lift ride, doors, and in most cases separate air handling - so a guest experiences a change of register as moving from one place to another. A flat has none of that. The buyer covers the distance in a few seconds through an open doorway, the two registers mix at the boundary into a third that nobody chose, and the change is perceived as two products rather than two spaces. One register throughout, varied in intensity rather than character, is what reads as a home.

Is it worth making the entrance stronger than the rest of the flat? Slightly, and by accident more than by design. The entrance is where a buyer's nose is freshest and most attentive, and olfactory adaptation means they will consciously register the air for roughly the first minute inside and then stop noticing it, so the doorway is the one place the scenting is genuinely perceived. That is an argument for getting the entrance right, not for making it different - and in practice, if the machine is placed one room in and the property has been brought to level, the entrance will naturally sit slightly softer than the core, which is the correct direction. What you should never do is dose the entrance up, because the first breath is also the breath where heavy scent reads as concealment.

Where can a property legitimately smell different? Rooms the buyer mentally files as separate. A washroom is the clearest case - people expect a bathroom to have its own character and a reed diffuser there is normal and does not need to match. A utility room, a maid's room, a store or a terrace are similarly outside the main walk-through and nobody is comparing them to the living room. What has to be one continuous register is the spine the buyer actually walks: entrance, passage, living and dining, kitchen if it is open, bedrooms. Two registers on that spine collide. Two registers between the living room and the guest washroom do not.
The short answer
Short answer: No - a deliberately different entrance register is a hotel technique that backfires in a flat. Hotels separate zones by distance, doors, time and separate air handling; a buyer crosses from a flat's doormat to its living room in about four seconds, so two registers mix at the boundary and are read as two competing air fresheners rather than as two spaces. Use one register throughout the walk-through spine, varied in intensity rather than character, with the entrance sitting slightly softer because the machine is placed one room in. Washrooms, utilities and terraces can legitimately differ - reeds from Rs 749. Vaayu Rs 11,999, registers from Rs 299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Should I use one scent at the door of a listing and a different one inside?
No, and here is the reasoning rather than just the rule. 1. What the hotel is actually doing. A hotel that scents its lobby, spa and club floor differently is separating those zones with distance, doors, lift rides and usually separate air handling. The guest spends minutes between them and arrives with a cleared nose. That is a designed sequence. 2. What a flat has instead. Four seconds, one open doorway and shared air. Two registers in that geometry do not sequence, they mix - and what mixes at the boundary is a third smell neither you nor the perfumer chose. 3. What the buyer concludes. A change of fragrance inside four seconds is read as two products, therefore as staging, therefore as something being managed - and in a property viewing the next question is always what was here before. Heavy or layered scenting reads as concealment; that is the single most important thing to understand about scenting a listing. 4. What to do instead. One register across the whole walk-through - entrance, passage, living and dining, bedrooms - varied only in intensity. The Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar is the safest for a daytime viewing; the Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar is quieter; the Four Seasons-inspired citrus, floral and sandalwood suits a brighter flat, and the 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves a concrete-and-timber home. Hold it with a single SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) placed one room in from the door, so the entrance naturally reads a touch softer than the core. 5. Where difference is fine. Washrooms, the utility, a store, a terrace - rooms the buyer files separately. A reed diffuser from ₹749 there is normal and need not match. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Why the hotel version works and the apartment version does not

What the hotel technique depends on, why an apartment supplies none of it, and the version of the idea that does survive translation.

Why this works
One register, two intensities, no collisions
1Hotels separate zones by distance, doors and air handling. A flat separates by nothing2Four seconds from doormat to living room: two registers mix rather than sequence3Buyers read a scent change as two products, and two products as something managed4Vary intensity, never character - and let washrooms and utilities sit outside the rule
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The borrowed idea
What a hotel is actually relying on when it zones scent
Zoned scenting in hospitality is not a trick, it is a design that depends on conditions a hotel has and a flat does not. Distance is the first: a guest walks tens of metres and takes a lift between the lobby register and the spa one, which is enough time for the nose to clear and for the second register to arrive as a new impression rather than as a change to the first. Doors are the second: real physical separation, often with pressure differences and separate air handling units, so the two bodies of air are not continuously mixing at a boundary. Expectation is the third and it is underrated: a guest already understands a lobby, a spa and a bar as different kinds of place, so a difference in the air confirms something they were expecting rather than raising a question. And the fourth is that the guest is not evaluating the building. They are staying in it. A buyer at a viewing is doing something completely different - they are looking for what is wrong, they are alert, and every deliberate signal is being read. Take those four conditions away and the technique does not shrink, it inverts.
Tip: the hotel version needs distance, doors, expectation and a guest who is not looking for problems - a viewing supplies none of the four.
2
The apartment
Four seconds, one doorway, and a third smell nobody chose
Pace out a typical listing. From the doormat outside, the buyer steps in, the shoe cabinet is on the left, three or four paces takes them past the passage and into the living room. That is four to six seconds, through an open doorway, in shared air with no pressure separation of any kind. Two different registers placed either side of that boundary do not produce two impressions; they produce a mixing zone in the passage where both are present at once. Fragrances are not designed to be blended with each other, and the result at the boundary is usually muddier and more insistent than either register on its own - which is why the honest description of a two-scent flat is not sophisticated, it is crowded. Then there is what the buyer does with it. They notice a change, and unlike a hotel guest they are actively interpreting the property. A change of smell across a threshold in a home has one obvious explanation to a buyer's mind: something has been applied. From there it is a very short step to wondering why, and heavy or evidently applied scenting in a property viewing reads as concealment - which is the exact opposite of the impression the money was spent to buy. One register at one low level makes none of these problems available.
3
The version that survives
Intensity is the axis you can vary honestly
There is something real in the original instinct and it is worth keeping. The entrance genuinely is the highest-value breath in the whole viewing, because olfactory adaptation means a buyer will consciously perceive the air for roughly the first minute inside and then stop noticing it almost entirely. Everything the scenting is going to achieve is achieved in that first minute. But the correct response is to make the entrance the calibration point of one register, not to give it a register of its own. In practice this happens by itself if you have placed the machine properly. A Vaayu (₹11,999) standing one room in from the front door delivers a core that is at level and an entrance that is a touch softer, because what reaches the doorway is scent that has already travelled and evened out. That is the right gradient - softer where attention is highest, steady everywhere else - and it is the reverse of what a broker gets by putting the machine on the hall console and turning it up. The exceptions sit outside the walk-through entirely. A washroom is a room people grant separate status without thinking about it, and a reed diffuser there from ₹749 is normal. A utility, a store, a maid's room or a terrace are the same. What must be continuous is the spine: entrance, passage, living and dining, kitchen if it is open, bedrooms.
Tip: vary the intensity along the walk-through, never the character - and let the entrance be the softest point rather than the loudest.
The SOSA principle
The hotel zones its scent because a guest takes two minutes and a lift to travel between zones. Your buyer takes four seconds and no door - so one register, or two air fresheners.
Keep the character constant along the whole walk-through and let intensity do the only varying, softest at the entrance where attention is highest.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

What if the owner already has something scenting the bedroom?
Work with it or work around it, but do not compete with it. In an occupied flat the owner's own habits are part of the property, and a bedroom that carries a familiar personal fragrance reads as lived in rather than as staged, which is not a problem. What does become a problem is running a different register through the rest of the flat at any real strength, because the two meet in the corridor. The practical fix is to drop your own level so that your register is genuinely a background and theirs is the only thing anyone would name, or to leave the bedroom wing out of the airflow path entirely by placing the machine on the living side. What you should not do is ask an owner to stop using something in their own bedroom for a viewing - the cost to the relationship is out of proportion to the benefit.
Is a separate scent for a home office or study a bad idea too?
On the walk-through, yes, for the same reason. A study opening off a living room is four paces from it and shares its air, so a second register there produces the same mixing zone in the doorway and the same interpretation from the buyer. The instinct behind the question is usually right, though - a study or library often does want a slightly different character, something drier and woodier than a bright living room. Get that by choosing one register for the whole property that works in both, rather than by running two. The 1 Hotels-inspired cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves does this well in a modern home, and the Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar does it in a lighter one - both have enough wood in the base to sit properly in a study and enough lift to work in a living room.
Do buyers really notice a change of scent between rooms?
Consciously, some of them; usefully, more than that. The nose is far better at detecting change than at detecting steady state, which is exactly why a constant level becomes invisible within a minute while a shift across a doorway does not. Most buyers will not stop and announce that the hall smells different from the living room, but a noticeable proportion will register that something about the air is busy or overdone without being able to say why, and that vague impression is the damaging one because it attaches itself to the property rather than to the fragrance. Steady is invisible and invisible is the goal. If you want a single test, walk the whole property yourself with your eyes shut and see whether you can tell which room you are in from the air. If you can, simplify.
Our brand uses one signature scent across all our listings. Does that conflict with this?
Not at all - it is the same principle applied one level up. One register across a property is what makes each viewing feel composed; one register across a portfolio is what makes a buyer who sees three of your listings in a weekend experience them as coming from the same firm, which is a legitimate and quite durable effect given how well scent-linked memories persist. The two work together and the failure mode is identical in both: variation of character reads as inconsistency, and inconsistency in a premium context reads as carelessness. Vary the intensity to suit a property's size and how full of soft furnishings it is, keep the character fixed, and be aware that a strong signature is a worse idea than a quiet one for exactly the concealment reason this page keeps returning to.
Is there ever a case for a stronger entrance in a very large property?
In a large villa or a duplex the honest answer is that the question changes shape. What you are dealing with there is not a decision to make the entrance different but a coverage problem: a single machine cannot bring a 5,000 or 6,000 sq ft property to one even level, so you are zoning by necessity and the goal becomes making the zones indistinguishable rather than distinct. That means one register in every zone, several units or a larger system, and levels tuned per zone so the buyer walking between them notices nothing. It is a genuinely different exercise from an apartment and the arithmetic deserves its own working - the villa coverage and multi-floor guides cover it, and WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531 with the floor plate and ceiling heights if you want it sized properly.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
