Mostly no, and the reason is counter-intuitive enough to be worth setting out properly. Reed count controls how fast oil leaves the bottle. It does not control how fast air leaves the room, and in a strongly ventilated space the second of those is the larger number by far. So going from three reeds to six in a room that is being flushed buys you a bottle that empties in half the time and a room that smells only slightly different. Fix the placement first, then the hours, and only then reach for the dial.
Quick answers — read this first
The short version: more reeds in a high-exchange room mostly buys a faster-emptying bottle, not a stronger room.

What to change first: placement. Move the bottle off the line between two openings and onto the sheltered side of the room. It costs nothing and it changes more than the dial does.

When six reeds is right: when the room is closed and occupied — the evening hours, the bedroom at night. That is the moment to be at full projection, and it is also the moment when six can overshoot a small sealed room and read as too much.

When the answer is a different bottle rather than more reeds: if the room is above about 150 sq ft, a 50ml is under-specified and will read as weak while performing exactly to specification. That is a size question — 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 — and no number of reeds fixes it.

The honest bit: there is no reed count that makes a room with the windows open behave like a room with them closed. Nobody sells one.
The short answer
Short answer: no, not as a response to airflow. How much fragrance is in a room at any moment is the balance between what is being added and what is being carried away. Reed count sets the first — six fibre reeds is full projection, three is a soft bedside level and roughly doubles the life of a bottle. Air exchange sets the second, and in a room with a strong through-draught it is the dominant term. Doubling the reeds roughly doubles your consumption for a modest change in what you actually perceive, because the room keeps replacing its air either way.
The order to work in: placement, then hours, then dose, then size. Move the bottle out of the airflow path and onto the sheltered side of the room. Decide which hours the room is closed and occupied, and use six reeds for those. Then, if the room is genuinely above 150 sq ft, buy the size it needs — a 130ml at ₹1,249 rather than more sticks in a 50ml. Every SOSA bottle ships with six fibre reeds and six is the full setting; there is no seventh setting.
Shop: 50ml from ₹749 for rooms up to about 150 sq ft, 6–8 weeks, roughly ₹13–₹15 a day. 130ml from ₹1,249 for rooms above that, 14–18 weeks. Mountain Breeze ₹849 at 9.4 has the most presence in an airy room; Evening Calm ₹799 at 8.9 is the softest and the one to choose down to for a small sealed bedroom. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
My room has a strong draught. Will putting all six reeds in — or adding more — make it smell stronger?
1. Name the mechanism: reed count is a rate control on one side of a balance you do not own. Oil travels up the fibre and evaporates from the exposed length, so more reeds means more surface and a faster release. That is the only thing reed count does. It has no effect whatever on how often the room's air is replaced, and in a strongly ventilated room the replacement is what is deciding the outcome.

2. So the trade is real and it is not in your favour. Going from three to six roughly halves the life of the bottle. In a sealed bedroom that trade buys a clearly stronger room and is often worth it. In a room with a through-draught it buys a modest lift and a visit to the shop twice as often, because the extra vapour is being carried out along with the rest.

3. Change the placement before the dose, every time. Move the bottle out of the line between two openings, onto the sheltered side of the room, at or slightly below nose height, out of direct sun and away from any flame. This is free, it is reversible, and in most airy rooms it makes more difference than three extra reeds would.

4. If the room reads as weak even when it is closed, suspect the size rather than the sticks. A 50ml is built for rooms up to about 150 sq ft and a 130ml for above that, so a 50ml in a 300 sq ft open-plan living room will read as weak while performing exactly to specification. The fix there is the 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349, which also lasts 14–18 weeks rather than 6–8. Adding reeds to an under-sized bottle only empties it faster.

5. Use all six for the closed hours, and watch for the opposite problem. When the windows shut, the room stops flushing and the concentration climbs. Six reeds in a small sealed bedroom is where most people overshoot, and an overdosed composition flattens into a single sweet or sharp impression — which is what people mean when they call something an air freshener. Restraint reads as expensive. It costs nothing to apply.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, IFRA-compliant, composed in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: no. More reeds in a high-exchange room buys a faster-emptying bottle rather than a stronger room. Move the bottle off the airflow path, use six only when the room is closed and occupied, and if it still reads as weak, check the room's size against the bottle's rather than adding sticks.
SOSA Mountain Breeze pine sage and cedar reed diffuser
Register instead of dose
Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage, cedar ₹849 / 50ml
If you want more presence in a room that keeps flushing, the cheaper move is to change the register rather than the reed count. At 9.4 Mountain Breeze is the deepest woody we make, dry and resinous rather than sweet, and it holds a room better than a light floral does at the same dose. That is a choice you make once, at no ongoing cost — whereas six reeds is a choice you pay for every six weeks. 130ml is ₹1,349 for rooms above 150 sq ft.

What a reed actually controls, and what it does not

A reed diffuser is a very simple machine with one moving part, and understanding it takes about a paragraph. Oil is drawn up the fibre by capillary action and evaporates from whatever length of reed is standing in the air. More reeds means more evaporating surface, which means a faster release and a shorter bottle. That is the entire mechanism. There is no pump, no fan and no way for the bottle to push harder against a moving room. Everything else that decides whether you can smell it happens outside the bottle.

1
THE DIAL · WHAT IT DOES
Six reeds is full projection; three is soft and roughly double the life
Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749Every SOSA bottle ships with six fibre reeds — fibre rather than rattan, because rattan has irregular internal channels and wicks unevenly in Indian humidity, fading at the dry end. Six is the full setting and it is right for a living room or a large kitchen. Three is a soft bedside level and roughly doubles how long the bottle lasts. There is no setting above six: the neck holds what it holds, and crowding it does nothing except make the bottle easier to knock over and harder to flip. If a room is not responding at six, the answer is not seven. It is somewhere else entirely.
The point: the dial changes your consumption reliably and your perception only when the room can hold what you add.
2
THE ROOM · WHAT IT DOES
In a draught, removal is the dominant term
Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849Two openings on different sides of a room make a path, and the air in that path is not lingering. Fragrance travels in air; it is not attached to the furniture. So the vapour a bottle releases in a strongly ventilated room has a short residence time, and the question of whether you released twice as much of it becomes far less interesting than the question of how quickly the room empties. This is why the same bottle, unchanged, can be lovely at ten at night and imperceptible at two in the afternoon. Nothing about the oil has altered between those two moments. The room has.
The point: you cannot raise a level in a container that is being emptied faster than you can fill it.
3
THE NOSE · WHAT IT DOES
You are the least reliable instrument in your own house
Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799Before you add reeds because you cannot smell anything, rule out the simpler explanation. Receptors adapt to a constant, unchanging stimulus within minutes — the signal is still arriving, the brain has stopped reporting it. Sensitivity to individual materials also varies a great deal between people, so it is entirely ordinary for guests to comment on a fragrance the owner of the house cannot detect. If everybody else can smell it and you cannot, adding reeds will not change what you perceive; it will only change how often you buy a bottle. Leave the flat for fifteen minutes and walk back in before you decide.
The point: judge the room on arrival, and treat a visitor's opinion as better evidence than your own.

Placement first, hours second, dose third, size last

This is the order I would work in, and it is deliberately the reverse of the order most people try. Placement is free, immediate and reversible, so it should always be the first experiment: take the bottle off the sill, off the console beside the balcony door, out of the corridor between two openings, and put it on the sheltered side of the room, away from direct sun and well away from any diya, agarbatti or candle, since fragrance oil is flammable. Give it a day before you judge.

Hours come second, because they decide when the dose is worth spending. In a home that is open through the day and closed in the evening, three reeds through the open stretch and six once the windows shut is a better arrangement than six all day, and it costs less. Dose is third and it is a small adjustment rather than a rescue. Size is last and it is the one people should check earlier than they do: 50ml up to about 150 sq ft, 130ml above it. A 130ml in a 120 sq ft bedroom is over-specified and the honest recommendation there is a 50ml with fewer reeds; a 50ml in a large open-plan room will disappoint at any reed count.

There is one more free lever, and in an airy home it is the most powerful of all: close the room for twenty minutes before you want to notice it. That is not a workaround, it is simply using the product in the conditions it was designed for. A room that has been shut for a third of an hour with six reeds in it is a different environment from the same room with the balcony open, and no purchase produces that difference as reliably as the latch does.

Five changes, honestly scored
What each one buys you in a room with strong airflow
Change What it costs What actually changes in the room Verdict
Move the bottle off the airflow path Nothing The vapour is released into slower air and lingers longer near you Do this first, always
Close the room for twenty minutes Nothing The exchange stops and the concentration climbs quickly The most effective free move there is
Three reeds up to six Roughly halves the life of the bottle A modest lift while the room is flushing; a real one once it is closed Worth it for the closed hours, wasteful for the open ones
Move to a smaller enclosed room Nothing A far higher perceived level for the same release rate The change people resist and should make
50ml up to 130ml Roughly ₹500 more, and 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 Correct specification for a room above 150 sq ft; nothing if the room is small A size fix, not an airflow fix

Register, size and restraint — the three real levers
The SOSA principle
More reeds in a windy room is not a stronger room. It is a faster-emptying bottle.
The dial is worth using — but it belongs to the hours the room is closed, not to the hours it is being flushed.

When six reeds genuinely is the answer

I do not want this page read as an argument for permanent restraint, because there are rooms where full projection is exactly right. Use all six when the room is large, closed and occupied — a living room above 150 sq ft in the evening, a kitchen of around 200 sq ft with the 130ml, a flat that shuts at seven and fills with people at eight. Use all six on arrival days, when you want the house to read well to somebody whose nose is not adapted to it. And use all six whenever you have just flipped the reeds, since flipping releases a burst and restores projection without opening a new bottle — every three to five days for Morning Freshness, five to seven for Garden Bloom.

The place to be careful is the opposite one. A small, sealed, recirculating room is where six reeds most often overshoots, and the symptom is not "too strong" so much as "flat". Almost any composition read at too high a concentration collapses into a single sweet or sharp impression, which is precisely what people are describing when they say something smells like an air freshener rather than a fragrance. The same oil at a lower dose reads as layered, because the nose has room to resolve the separate materials. If a bedroom that closes with the AC on feels like a lot, take three reeds out and choose down the strength scale as well — Evening Calm at 8.9 is the softest thing we make and exists for exactly this reader.

And if you have concluded from all of this that the bottle you own is simply a weak one, it is worth ruling that out properly before you spend again. A bottle in a room larger than it was built for will read as weak while performing to specification, a bottle three weeks in will read quieter than it did in week one because the lightest materials leave first and what remains is the composition as it was designed to sit, and a bottle you have lived alongside all day will read as nothing at all because of adaptation. None of those is a fault, and none of them is fixed by more reeds.

The dial is real and it is worth using. It is simply not a lever against the weather.

What to buy for a room with strong airflow, in order

Honest notes for buyers: SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Six reeds is full projection and three is a soft level that roughly doubles the life; there is no setting above six. Longevity of 6–8 weeks on 50ml and 14–18 weeks on 130ml assumes ordinary Indian household conditions and shortens in hot, sunny or heavily ventilated rooms. The strength scale — Evening Calm 8.9, Garden Bloom 8.9, Morning Freshness 9.0, Mountain Breeze 9.4, Fresh Brew 9.5 — measures perceived intensity in the room, not quality or concentration, and exists so that somebody buying for a small sealed bedroom can deliberately choose down it. Reed oil and the water-based Hotel Collection are different physical systems and cannot be swapped in either direction; there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep any diffuser away from diyas, agarbatti and open flame. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Fresh & Grounded reed diffuser duo
Two rooms, two dose settings
Fresh & Grounded duo ₹1,548
Morning Freshness and Mountain Breeze as two 50ml bottles. In a home with one airy room and one that closes, this is the sensible split: the deeper woody at six reeds where the air keeps moving, the bright citrus at three where the room seals at night. Two bottles rather than a boxed set, and if you already know which single register suits you, one bottle is the better purchase and I would say so.

A note from Sonal

Reed count is the adjustment I wish more people used and the one I most often see used in the wrong direction. It is genuinely powerful — three reeds against six is the difference between a bedroom that is pleasant and one that is a lot, and it is free — but it is powerful inside a room that can hold fragrance. Pointed at a draught it just makes the bottle disappear faster.

There is also an aesthetic reason to be careful about reaching for six by default, and it is the part of my training that translates least well into a product listing. Dose is most of what separates a composition that reads as expensive from one that reads as cheap. Push almost any fragrance too high and it flattens into one impression — sweet, or sharp, or simply loud. Ease it down and the nose starts resolving the separate materials again, and the same oil sounds layered. Restraint is the cheapest luxury signal there is.

So my honest advice to somebody standing in a breezy room with a bottle in their hand is to put three of the reeds down, move the bottle to the far wall, and try again tomorrow. If that fails, close the room for twenty minutes and see what happens. Both of those are free, and between them they answer this question more often than any purchase does. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use more reeds in a room with strong airflow?
Mostly no. Reed count controls how fast oil leaves the bottle; it has no effect on how fast air leaves the room, and in a strongly ventilated space the second is the dominant term. Going from three reeds to six roughly halves the life of the bottle for a modest change in what you perceive while the room is flushing. Move the bottle off the airflow path first, then use six for the hours the room is closed and occupied.
Can I add extra reeds beyond the six in the box?
There is no setting above six. Every SOSA bottle ships with six fibre reeds and that is full projection; crowding the neck does not raise the level meaningfully and makes the bottle easier to knock over and harder to flip. If a room is not responding at six, the answer lies in placement, in the room's size against the bottle's, or in the hours you are trying to use it — not in a seventh reed.
How many reeds should I use in a bedroom that closes with the AC on?
Three is usually right, and this is where six most often overshoots. A closed recirculating room distributes fragrance evenly and holds what it is given, so the dose that suits a ventilated living room is too much here. Three reeds roughly doubles the life of the bottle as well. If it still feels like a lot, choose down the strength scale — Evening Calm at 8.9 is the softest scent we make.
Did I get a weak bottle?
Unlikely, and the room is the more common cause. A 50ml is built for spaces up to about 150 sq ft, so a 50ml in a large open-plan living room will read as weak while performing exactly to specification. A bottle also runs hottest in its first days, when the lightest materials leave first, and settles into its heart and base afterwards — that is settling rather than fading, and flipping the reeds restores projection. And you are adapted to your own home. Change the dial and the placement before you change the bottle.
Would a stronger scent work better than more reeds in a breezy room?
It is the cheaper of the two changes, since a register costs nothing extra to run. Mountain Breeze at 9.4 and Fresh Brew at 9.5 have more presence in a room that keeps flushing than a soft floral does at the same reed count. But be clear about what that buys: a little more perceived presence in the open hours, not a room that holds fragrance the way a closed one does. The scale measures perceived intensity in the room, not quality.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on whether raising the reed count helps in a room with strong airflow. The reasoning is qualitative: SOSA publishes no air-change rates, evaporation curves or percentages, and none are implied here. Longevity figures assume ordinary Indian household use and vary with room size, ventilation, temperature, sunlight and reed count. Review quotations are from verified SOSA buyers. This page makes no health, air-quality or odour-removal claim; a home fragrance adds a scent to a room and does not remove one.
