Different scents: no. A duplex has an internal stair, so the floors share air. Two compositions meet at the landing and read as busy rather than as designed.
The technical point: a stairwell behaves like a flue. Warm air moves up it continuously, carrying whatever is in it, so an upper floor receives more from a ground-floor machine than people expect — and a machine at the top of the stair pushes almost nothing downward.
So: scent low, near the entrance, and let the building carry it up. Vaayu ₹11,999, one machine, adjustable intensity.
2. The reason for one scent is that a duplex is connected, not adjacent. An internal stair is an open air path between the floors, so the two levels share air continuously. Two compositions do not occupy separate territories in a property like that — they meet somewhere on the stair and read as busy.
3. The reason for different intensities is that the rooms are different sizes and different jobs. A 265 m³ entrance and living volume needs a level. A 112 m³ bedroom behind a door does not, and the same setting that reads as considered downstairs reads as heavy in a small enclosed room.
4. A buyer registers the change, which is the point of arranging it. Moving from a space that carries a level into one that is quieter is read as the property being thought about. Every room at an identical intensity is read, if it is read at all, as a machine having been switched on.
5. Then the mechanism that decides placement: a stairwell behaves like a flue. Warm air moves up a vertical shaft continuously and takes whatever is suspended in it, so an upper floor receives more from a ground-floor machine than most people expect. A machine at the top of the stair, by contrast, pushes almost nothing downward.
6. So scent low and let the building carry it up. One Vaayu at ₹11,999 near the entrance on the lower floor, on its lowest setting, from two hours before, with every internal door open. A 2,400 sq ft duplex is about 670 m³ against a 1000 m³ rating, and the stair does the rest for nothing.

One scent, several intensities — and why not two scents
Zoning is a good instinct applied in the wrong dimension. The thing worth varying across a duplex is how much, not what — and the reason is architectural rather than aesthetic. A duplex is defined by the one feature that makes it a duplex: an internal staircase, open at both ends, joining two floors into a single connected air space. In a property built like that there is no such thing as a separate fragrance territory upstairs, because upstairs is downstairs' air a few minutes later. Once you see the building that way, both halves of the answer follow from the same fact.
The duplex, zone by zone
A 2,400 sq ft duplex — about 670 cubic metres across two floors — with the intensity each zone should carry and why. One scent throughout; only the level changes. The volumes are calculated at a 10 ft ceiling and the totals are real.
| Zone | Floor area | Volume at 3 m | Intensity | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entrance, living and dining (lower) ★ | 950 sq ft | About 265 m³ | Carries the level. The machine lives here | Where the impression forms, the largest volume in the property, and upstream of the stair that feeds everything above it |
| The stair and stairwell | — | Counted with the lower floor | Whatever the lower floor is producing | Not a zone to scent. A flue that carries air upward continuously, and the reason one machine downstairs serves both floors |
| Upper landing | 150 sq ft | About 42 m³ | Receives generously from below; add nothing | A small volume at the top of a shaft that is delivering into it all day. Machines placed here push almost nothing back down |
| Master bedroom (upper) | 400 sq ft | About 112 m³ | Noticeably lighter than downstairs | Smaller, more enclosed, and a room the buyer is imagining themselves asleep in. A present fragrance competes with that |
| Two further bedrooms (upper) | 400 sq ft | About 112 m³ | Lighter again, doors open for the two hours | Same reasoning, and further from the stair. Open the doors during the establishing period, close them for the viewing itself |
| Kitchen, utility, bathrooms | 500 sq ft | About 140 m³ | None added. Fix the source instead | Traps watered the day before, bins out, extraction run. A smell with a cause is a job for a plumber, never for a diffuser |

The stair is a flue, so scent low
Start with the single placement decision, because in a duplex it decides everything else. The Vaayu goes on the lower floor, near the entrance, at waist height or above, out of the front-door draught — and it does not go on the landing, in a bedroom, or halfway up the stairs. Near the entrance it is upstream of the whole property: it supplies the largest volume directly, and the stair takes a share of that upward for nothing. It is also where the buyer's first ninety seconds happen, which is where a level is worth the most. On the lowest setting: 670 m³ of duplex against a 1000 m³ rating leaves enough headroom that low is genuinely sufficient, and low is what produces a level the buyer notices on arrival and stops noticing four minutes later. Then a thing worth doing once, in your own listing, that no specification sheet can tell you: run the machine for two hours, then walk the property in the order the buyer will and stand still for thirty seconds in each zone. Entrance, living volume, stair, landing, each bedroom. What you are checking is whether the upstairs gradient is already correct — in most duplexes it is, because the flue effect has done it for you — and whether any room is receiving more than you intended. If a bedroom is heavier than the hall, the machine is too close to the stair or the setting is too high, and the fix is to move it further into the living volume rather than to close a door.
Then the doors and the timing, which do the fine adjustment that the machine cannot. Every internal door on both floors stands open for the two hours before the viewing, and the ones you want closed get closed at about thirty minutes. That sequence is what makes the upstairs rooms read as lighter versions of the same property rather than as rooms that were missed: they are reached during the establishing period, and then the door holds a lighter level in place rather than excluding one. If a particular bedroom comes out heavier than the rest — the one directly off the landing usually does, because it sits at the mouth of the flue — close that one earlier, at an hour rather than thirty minutes, and it will have settled by the time the buyer reaches it. The 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers make all of this manageable without you being in the property: set the 4h timer, and the duplex will have been at its level for ninety minutes when you arrive with the buyer. Then the temperature, which changes the flue strength and therefore the gradient. A stair draws harder when the lower floor is warmer than the upper one, so a duplex with the downstairs air conditioning running and the upstairs off delivers more upward than one cooled evenly. If the upstairs is reading light and you would rather it did not, running the lower-floor cooling and leaving the upper landing warm is a free adjustment, and it is more reliable than changing the setting on the machine.
Then the machines that are wrong for this and the rule that outranks the lot. A second machine upstairs is usually unnecessary and occasionally counterproductive, and the Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the specific version of that mistake I am asked about most. It is water-based and it puts 30–50 ml of water an hour into the air, which on the closed upper floor of a duplex that sits empty between viewings is the wrong direction — and it would be adding a source at the exact point where the building is already delivering. It is a good machine for one room of an occupied home and that is where it belongs. A reed diffuser from ₹749 has an honest place in a duplex being shown every weekend for months, on the console in the hall, as a constant that needs nothing from you; it takes 24 to 72 hours to establish, it cannot be turned down, and it is therefore no use whatever for a viewing on Saturday. A candle at ₹379 must be attended and put out, so it is fine in an occupied duplex where somebody is home and an insurance problem in a vacant one, and I would rather write that than let anybody find out the expensive way. SOSA does not make a room spray for the home; the sprays in the range are car perfumes. And before any of it: if the property has damp, a leak, a drain fault or a smell with a structural cause, none of this page applies. A stairwell will distribute that upward as efficiently as it distributes anything else, which is often how a first-floor smell turns out to be a ground-floor problem. Find it, fix it or disclose it. Those are material facts about a property. Fragrance is presentation, alongside photography, styling and lighting, and it never goes near a defect.
The SOSA edit
In buying order for a duplex being prepared for a viewing. It is a short list on purpose — the answer to this question is one machine, one bottle and a decision about where to stand it, and the last row is the purchase I would talk most readers out of.
| Buy | What it is | When it earns its place | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. SOSA Vaayu ★ | Waterless nebulisation, up to 1000 m³ against about 670, adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38 dB, auto-stop, key-lock, 0.9 kg | First and usually only. Lower floor, near the entrance, lowest setting, two hours out, every internal door open | ₹11,999 |
| 2. Ritz-Carlton-inspired 15ml | White tea, bergamot and cedar — one register for the whole property, upstairs and down | Always. One scent across a connected property is the entire recommendation of this page | ₹299 |
| 3. 1 Hotels-inspired 15ml | Cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves — dry and low, and the most tolerant of an open kitchen | Where the lower floor puts the kitchen into the dining volume, which most duplex plans do | ₹299 |
| 4. 300ml refill | About ₹6 per millilitre against roughly ₹20 at 15ml, for a listing being shown week after week | Once the duplex has been on the market a season and the register is settled | ₹1,799 |
| 5. Reed diffusers | Alcohol-free, 24–72 hours to establish, no timer and no adjustment, from ₹749 | On the hall console of a duplex shown every weekend for months, as a constant. Useless for a viewing tomorrow | from ₹749 |
| Rarely needed: a second machine upstairs | 500ml ultrasonic, 270–320 sq ft, water-based at 30–50 ml an hour, three 15ml scents included | Almost never in a duplex. The stair already delivers upward, and a landing machine pushes almost nothing back down | ₹1,899 |
Versailles
Zoning is the request I most enjoy declining, because the instinct behind it is a good one aimed at the wrong variable. People want the bedrooms of a duplex to feel different from the living areas, and they are right that the bedrooms should feel different. They are wrong that the way to do it is a second bottle. A duplex has an open stair in the middle of it, which means the two floors are one air space with a delay, and two compositions in one air space meet on the landing and turn into a question the buyer cannot answer. What you want to vary is the level, and the level is free to vary.
The thing I would most like a realtor to take from this page, though, is the stair itself, because it is the part nobody has been told. A stairwell is a flue. It draws upward continuously, all day, because warm air is lighter than cool air and a stair void is a vertical shaft with a temperature difference across it — and everything in the downstairs air goes up with it. So the upper floor of a duplex generally receives more from a machine downstairs than anybody expects, and a machine put at the top of the stair spends its life pushing against the current and reaching nothing below it. Scent low, near the entrance, and let the building do the distribution. It has been doing it since it was built and it does not charge for it.
Everything is made and supported from Pune, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. You get a space that smells like somewhere considered; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
