The honest answer is yes, and the useful answer is about how. A scheme that has been resolved down to the switch plates and the reveal on the skirting arrives at handover with one sensory channel left completely to chance, and the client fills it themselves within a fortnight, usually with whatever was on the shelf at the supermarket. So put it on the schedule. But specify it the way you specify everything else - with a stated reason, a named product, a named location, a power supply that exists, and a client who has been shown how to work it - and accept one asymmetry that applies to nothing else in your scheme: this is the only element the client can change in thirty seconds.
Quick answers — read this first
Should an interior designer specify fragrance as part of a project handover? Yes, and it should be treated as an ordinary line on the handover schedule rather than as a gift or a flourish. That means the same discipline you apply to a light fitting: a stated reason for the choice, a named product, a named position, a live socket that was designed in rather than found on the day, and a five-minute briefing so the client knows how to turn it down and off. The difference from every other item is that the client can reverse this one instantly and at no cost, which is exactly why the choice should be handed over rather than imposed. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is the usual handover unit for a connected living and entrance volume; reeds from Rs 749 suit a single room or a powder room.

What should a designer check before choosing a scent for a client's home? Ask about the household before you shortlist anything. Who lives there: young children, elderly parents, anyone pregnant, anyone with asthma, migraine or a known fragrance sensitivity, and pets, who live at floor level and cannot leave the room. Then ask the client directly what they dislike, because that answer is more useful than what they like. Then check the physical facts: which rooms actually share air, the ceiling height, and where a live socket sits relative to the place the unit should stand. Any hesitation from the client on any of these is a no, not an objection to be talked through.

Can SOSA compose a bespoke scent for a specific interior project? Yes. Bespoke composition is a real SOSA service, and designers do commission it for a house, a practice or a hospitality project where the seven Hotel Collection registers, from Rs 299, are not the brief. What we do not publish is any of the commercial detail around it, so we will not state a cost, a minimum, a timeline or a working process on a blog page. Message the studio on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the project, the rooms and what you are trying to achieve, and you will get a straight answer from the people who would actually do the work.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes - specify fragrance at handover, and treat it as an ordinary specification: a stated reason, a named product, a named position, a live socket designed in rather than found, and a client briefing that covers how to turn it down and off. Check the household first: children, elderly relatives, pregnancy, asthma or migraine, fragrance sensitivity and pets. The client's preference outranks the designer's vision, and a scent the client quietly dislikes is a specification failure. Vaayu Rs 11,999, reeds from Rs 749, registers from Rs 299. Bespoke composition is a real SOSA service - WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 for anything specific.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Should fragrance be on my handover schedule, and how do I specify it without imposing my taste on the client?
Yes to the first, and here is the second. 1. Put it on the schedule, not in the gift bag. A named product, a named room, a named position, a reason. If it is worth doing it is worth documenting, and an item that arrives as a surprise on handover day has no specification behind it and no support after it. 2. Ask about the household before you shortlist. Young children, elderly parents, anyone pregnant, anyone with asthma, migraine or fragrance sensitivity, and pets, who live at floor level, sleep in one spot and cannot leave the room. Any hesitation is a no. 3. Hand over the choice. Shortlist two or three registers from the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) and let the client pick. A scent chosen to complete your vision that the client quietly dislikes is not a bold specification, it is a failed one - and unlike your joinery, they can undo it in thirty seconds. 4. Design the socket in. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) runs on DC 12V / 1A, about 5W, and stands freestanding, lays flat, or mounts on a wall or into HVAC. Decide where it lives at drawing stage, because retro-fitting a socket into a finished console is a joinery job. 5. Brief the client on the off switch first. Before you show them the app schedule, show them how to turn it down and how to switch it off. Five minutes, at handover, with the manual left behind. 6. Route the specifics. Bespoke composition for a project is a real SOSA service; refill and running-cost questions on the Vaayu are not published. Both go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 rather than into your handover document. We will not claim that any of this influences a sign-off, an approval or a referral. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Specifying it properly: the client, the household, the socket

Three things separate a specified fragrance from a parting gift: whose preference decides it, who else lives in the air, and whether the physical provision was designed or improvised.

Why this works
Fragrance as a specification, not a flourish
1Ask about the household first: children, elderly, pregnancy, sensitivities, pets2Shortlist two or three registers and let the client choose the one they live with3Design the socket and the position in at drawing stage, not on handover day4Brief the off switch before the app - Vaayu Rs 11,999, reeds from Rs 749
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
Whose choice
The client lives there, and their preference outranks yours
This is the part most designers get wrong, and they get it wrong for a good reason: every other decision in the project has been yours to defend. You chose the stone because the alternative was wrong, you held the line on the ceiling height, you talked the client out of the sofa they had seen in a magazine. That authority is what they are paying for. Fragrance sits outside it, for a simple structural reason. Every other element of your scheme is something the client looks at; this is the only one they are inside, all day, involuntarily, breathing. Nobody develops a headache from a skirting detail. And it is the only element that can be reversed at zero cost in thirty seconds, which means an imposed choice does not survive contact with the client anyway - it just gets switched off quietly and never mentioned. So the intelligent move is not to fight for your register. It is to shortlist two or three that agree with the scheme, put them in front of the client, and let them choose. You still control the outcome, because you controlled the shortlist. A scent the client quietly dislikes is a specification failure in exactly the way a chair they will not sit in is a specification failure, and it fails the same way: silently, after you have left.
Tip: you control the shortlist, the client controls the choice - that division is what makes it a specification rather than an imposition.
2
Who else is there
You are specifying into a household, not into a photograph
The handover photographs show an empty apartment. What moves into it a week later is a family, and the questions worth asking are unglamorous. Are there young children, and how young. Is there an elderly parent living in, and which room is theirs. Is anyone pregnant, or likely to be during the first year, because sensitivity to ambient smell in the first trimester is common and unpredictable. Does anyone have asthma, migraine, or a fragrance sensitivity they have learned to manage by avoiding certain shops. Are there pets: a dog or a cat lives at floor level, sleeps in one fixed spot, and has no way of leaving a room it finds unpleasant, so the unit belongs off the floor and away from the animal's bed, at a low setting, and if the client is unsure the honest answer is to leave it out of the specification and let them raise it with their vet. Then there is the household staff. In many Indian homes a cook or a housekeeper spends more waking hours in that air than the family does, which makes them the most exposed occupants of the building and the people nobody thinks to ask. Ask anyway. Any sensitivity report from anyone in the household is a recalibration signal, not a tolerance problem, and the correct response is to drop a setting rather than explain the specification.
3
The provision
A socket, a surface, a briefing, and one page of documentation
Now the boring half, which is the half that determines whether the thing is still running in a year. The unit needs power: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) runs on DC 12V / 1A, about 5W, so it is a small load, but it is a load, and the socket has to exist within reach of the position you have chosen. Decide that at drawing stage. Retro-fitting a point into a finished console, or running a visible lead across a wall you spent three months detailing, is the most avoidable failure on this list. The unit also needs somewhere sensible to sit: it is freestanding and can lay flat, or it can be wall mounted or mounted into HVAC, which is usually the designer's answer, because it removes the object from the room entirely. What it cannot do is live sealed inside a closed cabinet, because the air it puts out has to reach the room. Then the briefing, and the order of the briefing matters: show the client how to turn it down and how to switch it off before you show them anything else, because the person who cannot find the off switch is the person who unplugs the whole thing in week three. Leave a single page behind - what it is, where it is, what it runs, how to change the setting, and the WhatsApp line on +91 96192 18531 for anything you cannot answer. Reeds from ₹749 need none of this, which is exactly why they belong in a powder room or a guest cabin.
Tip: design the socket in, mount it out of the way, and brief the off switch before the app - those three things decide whether it is still running next year.
The SOSA principle
Specify it, document it, and then hand the choice to the person who has to breathe it. Authorship stops at the shortlist.
It is the one element of your scheme the client can reverse in thirty seconds, which is not a reason to leave it out. It is a reason to let them own it.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Can SOSA compose a bespoke scent for one of my projects?
Yes. Bespoke composition is a genuine SOSA service and designers do commission it, usually for a residence with a strong material identity, a practice that wants an olfactory signature of its own, or a hospitality project where an off-the-shelf register is not the brief. What we will not do is publish the commercial detail on a blog page, because none of it is published: no cost, no minimum, no timeline and no description of the working process. That is not evasiveness, it is that a bespoke brief is priced and scheduled against the brief itself, and a number invented here would be wrong for your project. Message the studio on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the project, the rooms, the material palette and what you want the air to do, and you will get a direct answer from the people who would compose it.
Is there a trade or designer programme I can register for?
There is no formal trade programme with published terms, so there is nothing to sign up to and no tier structure to describe. What there is, is a direct line: designers who specify SOSA regularly deal with the studio on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531, and questions about specifying across multiple projects are answered there rather than through a portal. If you are asking because you want to know how a practice that specifies fragrance on several projects a year is handled, that is exactly the conversation to have on that number. We would rather tell you plainly that no programme is published than imply terms that do not exist.
What if the client dislikes the scent after we have handed over?
Then the specification was wrong and the fix is easy, which is the whole argument for handing over the choice in the first place. Practically: the register is the cheapest part of the system to change, so a client who dislikes what is in the machine changes the fragrance, not the machine. If they dislike ambient fragrance as a category, they switch it off, and the unit becomes something they can use for a week before guests arrive and ignore the rest of the year, which is a perfectly reasonable outcome and not a failure of the project. What you should not do is treat their reaction as a taste problem to be corrected. If it made you uncomfortable to hear, that is information about the shortlist, and the next project benefits from it.
The apartment is finished and there is no socket where the unit should stand. Now what?
You have three honest options and one bad one. First, move the unit rather than the socket: the position that works is usually the one with the most air movement rather than the most visibility, so there is often a second location within reach of an existing point that performs as well. Second, consider a wall or HVAC mount, which is the answer that removes the object from the room and is frequently the neater result anyway. Third, put reeds in that room instead, from Rs 749, which need no power at all and are the correct answer in a powder room, a guest cabin or a small study regardless of what the socket situation is. The bad option is running a visible lead across finished joinery or a detailed wall, and it is bad for the reason all the others are good: the client sees it every day.
Does specifying fragrance help me get the project signed off or bring referrals?
We are not going to claim that, and you should treat any supplier who does with suspicion. Ambient scent research supports better evaluations of a space and the service delivered in it, longer dwell and stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes. It does not support any claim that fragrance influences a specification decision, a client approval, a sign-off or a sale, and nobody has published anything that would let us say otherwise about design practice specifically. The reason to specify fragrance is narrower and more defensible: you resolved every other sensory channel in the project, this one is currently being resolved by whatever the client buys at the supermarket, and you are better placed to resolve it than they are. That is a sufficient reason on its own.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
