Put a diffuser in the living room of a duplex, come back forty minutes later and walk the property the way a buyer will. The ground floor is fine. The staircase is fine. And the upper landing, which is the furthest point from the machine and the one you were worried about, is the strongest-smelling square metre in the listing. That is not a fault in the machine and it is not your imagination. Warm scented air rises, an internal staircase is an open vertical shaft, and you have accidentally built a chimney with a fragrance source at the bottom of it.
Quick answers — read this first
How do you scent a duplex property for a viewing? Usually with one machine on the LOWER floor and the staircase left open, not with a machine on each floor. Warm air rises and an internal stair is an open vertical shaft, so a source placed downstairs is carried up by the building itself and the two floors behave as one connected volume. A modest duplex of about 1,200 sq ft per floor is 2,400 sq ft in total, which at a ten-foot ceiling is 24,000 cubic feet, or 24,000 divided by 35.3, about 680 cubic metres. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated at roughly 1000 cubic metres of connected air, so that sits comfortably inside one unit. The mistake to avoid is placing the machine upstairs, where the stack works against you and the ground floor gets almost nothing.

Does a duplex need one diffuser per floor? Only when the connected volume is genuinely past one unit, or when the stair is enclosed by a door. A large duplex of about 1,800 sq ft per floor is 3,600 sq ft, which at ten feet is 36,000 cubic feet, about 1,020 cubic metres, and that is past a single Vaayu's rating even before you count the stairwell void. A triplex of about 1,400 sq ft per floor is 4,200 sq ft, 42,000 cubic feet, about 1,190 cubic metres, and the top floor is two flights from anything you put on the ground. Those are the honest two-unit cases. A modest duplex with an open stair is not.

Why is the upstairs landing the strongest-smelling part of a duplex? Because of the stack effect. Air warmed by the ground floor, by sunlight through the living room glazing and by the machine's own operation is lighter than the air above it, so it rises through the stairwell and collects at the highest point it can reach, which in a duplex is the upper landing. In an Indian duplex the upper floor is also usually the hotter one, sitting under a terrace slab, which strengthens the effect through the afternoon. The practical consequence is that a setting judged as correct in the downstairs living room can be a full notch too strong at the top of the stairs, and the top of the stairs is exactly where a buyer pauses to look back down.
The short answer
Short answer: Scent a duplex from the LOWER floor with the staircase open, not from the top. Warm scented air rises and an internal stair is a vertical shaft, so one source downstairs serves both floors. A 1,200 sq ft per floor duplex is 2,400 sq ft, 24,000 cubic feet at a ten-foot ceiling, about 680 cubic metres, well inside one Vaayu at Rs 11,999 (rated roughly 1000 cubic metres). A 1,800 sq ft per floor duplex is 3,600 sq ft, about 1,020 cubic metres, and a 1,400 sq ft per floor triplex is 4,200 sq ft, about 1,190 cubic metres, which are the honest two-unit cases. Judge the level on the upper landing, not in the downstairs living room. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
Do I need a machine on every floor of a duplex or triplex I am showing?
Five steps, and the first one settles most duplexes. 1. Do the arithmetic across both floors as one number. An internal staircase with no door is not a boundary, it is a connection, so add the floors together. A duplex at 1,200 sq ft per floor is 2,400 sq ft; at a ten-foot ceiling that is 24,000 cubic feet, and 24,000 divided by 35.3 is about 680 cubic metres. The stairwell itself adds very little to that total - a 6 ft by 12 ft void over a ten-foot rise is 720 cubic feet, about 20 cubic metres - but it matters out of all proportion to its size, because it is the route. 2. Put the machine on the lower floor. The building will do the vertical distribution for you. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, app and timer) standing on the kitchen platform or a console a few metres inside the entrance, with the stair open and the internal doors open, covers a 680 cubic metre duplex with real margin against its roughly 1000m³ rating. Place it upstairs instead and you are working against the stack: the upper floor will be well scented and the ground floor, which is where the buyer arrives and forms the first impression, will get very little. 3. Judge the dose at the top of the stairs. Not in the living room. The upper landing is where the fragrance concentrates, and it is where a buyer stands still for a moment. If it is noticeable there, you are one setting too high everywhere. Heavy scent in a viewing reads as concealment, and a buyer who climbs into a stronger smell wonders what is up there. 4. Know the two-unit cases honestly. A large duplex at 1,800 sq ft per floor is 3,600 sq ft, 36,000 cubic feet, about 1,020 cubic metres - past one unit. A triplex at 1,400 sq ft per floor is 4,200 sq ft, 42,000 cubic feet, about 1,190 cubic metres, with a top floor two flights away from any ground-floor source. Those want a second machine, or a rethink of the route. 5. If there is a stair door, the arithmetic resets. A closed door at the head or foot of the stair turns one connected volume into two, and the coverage rating applies to each separately. Open it an hour before the viewing and it is one property again. Ventilate and clean first; fragrance is the last layer, never a substitute for either. One line: machine on the LOWER floor, stair open, and judge the level on the upper landing where it collects. 2,400 sq ft duplex = about 680m³, inside one Vaayu ₹11,999. 3,600 sq ft duplex = about 1,020m³, and a triplex at 4,200 sq ft = about 1,190m³, which is a two-unit conversation. What the staircase actually does to your fragrance

Three things decide a multi-floor listing: what the staircase does to warm air, where the arithmetic actually lands once you add the floors together, and why the level you set downstairs is not the level the buyer meets at the top.

Why this works
Reading a duplex the way its air reads it
1The stair is not a boundary, it is a shaft - add the floors into one volume22,400 sq ft duplex at 10 ft = 24,000 cu ft = about 680 cubic metres3Machine on the lower floor: the stack carries it up, never the other way4Judge the dose on the upper landing, where it collects and the buyer pauses
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The chimney
An internal staircase is a vertical shaft, and it is working all day
The stack effect is not a fragrance phenomenon, it is a building phenomenon, and every broker has already felt it without naming it: the top floor of a duplex is warmer than the bottom, in every season, in every city in India. Warm air is less dense than cool air, so it rises to the highest point it can reach and cooler air moves in underneath to replace it. In a flat with a single floor level, that circulation is shallow and slow. In a duplex it has somewhere to go, and the staircase is the only route, which turns it into a continuous upward current running for as long as there is a temperature difference between the two floors. In an Indian duplex there almost always is. The upper floor sits under the terrace slab and takes the afternoon sun; the lower floor is shaded by the building above it. Add a double-height living volume with south or west glazing and the current is strong enough to feel on your face on the stairs at four in the afternoon. Anything airborne joins that current, including fragrance. So a machine on the ground floor is not fighting the building to reach the first floor. It is being carried there, continuously, by a mechanism that does not switch off. That is the single most useful fact about scenting a duplex, and it is why the instinct to buy one machine per floor is usually wrong. It also explains the thing that puzzles people: the furthest point from the machine is the strongest-smelling point in the property, because it is not the furthest point at all. It is downwind.
Tip: the top of the stairs is not the far end of the property - in air terms it is directly downstream of whatever you put on the ground floor.
2
The arithmetic
Add the floors, then check where 1000 cubic metres lands
Do it in one line and the buying decision usually answers itself. A modest duplex of 1,200 sq ft on each of two floors is 2,400 sq ft. At a ten-foot ceiling that is 2,400 multiplied by 10, or 24,000 cubic feet, and 24,000 divided by 35.3 is about 680 cubic metres. The stairwell void adds a token amount: a 6 ft by 12 ft opening over a ten-foot rise is 720 cubic feet, about 20 cubic metres. So the whole property is roughly 700 cubic metres of connected air against a rating of about 1000, which means one unit with margin, running at a low setting, which is the setting a viewing wants anyway. Now scale it. A large duplex at 1,800 sq ft per floor is 3,600 sq ft, 36,000 cubic feet, about 1,020 cubic metres, and that is past one unit before the stairwell is counted. A triplex at 1,400 sq ft on each of three floors is 4,200 sq ft, 42,000 cubic feet, about 1,190 cubic metres, and it carries a second problem the duplex does not: the top floor is two flights and one intermediate landing away from a ground-floor source, and every landing is a place where the current slows and part of the load is dropped. Height moves all of these numbers hard. The same 2,400 sq ft duplex with twelve-foot floors is 28,800 cubic feet, about 816 cubic metres, and a double-height living room over the ground floor pushes it further. Measure the finished ceiling on each floor separately, because in a duplex they are frequently not the same, and the ground floor is usually the taller of the two.
3
The dose
You set the level downstairs and the buyer meets it upstairs
This is where duplex viewings go wrong, and it goes wrong in a way that is invisible from where you are standing. You place the machine in the living room, you switch it on, you stand next to it, and you set the intensity to something that feels barely present. What you have calibrated is the air a metre from the source on the cool, lower, well-connected floor. The air the buyer meets at the top of the stairs twenty minutes later has been concentrated by the stack and pooled against the highest ceiling in the property, and it can be a clear notch stronger. Worse, the upper landing is a place where a buyer stops moving. They come up the stairs, they turn, they look back down over the void, and they take a proper breath while they are doing it. That is the single most attentive moment in a duplex viewing and it is happening in the strongest air in the flat. So calibrate from there. Set the machine, leave the property for the hour you were going to spend running it before the appointment anyway, and then come back in through the front door and walk straight up. If you can name the fragrance on the landing, drop a setting. A Vaayu (₹11,999) makes that a ten-second change from the app rather than a climb with a bottle, which matters more than it sounds when you are doing it at eleven on a Sunday morning with a buyer twenty minutes out. And the rule that governs this entire bank applies with extra force in a vertical property: heavy scent reads as concealment, and a buyer who walks up into a stronger smell than the one they walked in on will wonder, quite reasonably, what is up there.
Tip: walk in through the front door and go straight up before every viewing - the landing is your calibration point, not the living room.
The SOSA principle
A duplex is not two properties to scent. It is one property with a chimney in the middle of it - and the chimney only works in one direction.
Source on the lower floor, stair and internal doors open, level judged at the top. Two machines are for the 3,600 sq ft duplex and the triplex, not for the ordinary one.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put the machine at the bottom of the stairs or in the living room?
In the living room, on the airflow path, a few metres inside the entrance - not in the stairwell itself. The stairwell is a conduit rather than a room, and a machine standing in it does two unhelpful things. It sends most of its output straight up before the ground floor has been served, so the level a buyer meets on arrival is thin and the level they meet on the landing is heavy, which is precisely the gradient you are trying to avoid. And it puts a piece of equipment in the one part of the property where people are moving, turning and looking at the architecture, which is the last place you want a visible machine and a cable. Stand it where the ground floor air is being mixed anyway, let the stair pull from that mixed air rather than from the source directly, and the gradient between the two floors flattens out considerably.
The stair in my listing has a door at the top. Does that change anything?
It changes everything, and it is worth checking before you buy rather than after. A closed door at the head or foot of a staircase turns one connected volume into two separate ones, and every coverage rating on the market assumes one connected volume. With that door shut, a 2,400 sq ft duplex is not 680 cubic metres of connected air; it is two rooms of roughly 340 cubic metres each with a barrier between them, and a machine downstairs will not meaningfully reach the upper floor. The fix is free: open the door when you open the property, at least an hour before the appointment, along with every internal door you are going to show. If the door genuinely cannot stay open, because of a tenant, an owner in residence or a security arrangement, then you have two properties to scent and the honest answer is either a second source upstairs or a decision to scent only the floor the buyer spends time on.
Does the fragrance reach the top floor of a triplex from the ground?
Weakly, and unevenly, which is why a triplex is the point where a second machine becomes a reasonable purchase rather than an upsell. Two flights and an intermediate landing sit between a ground-floor source and the top level, and each landing is a place where the vertical current slows, spreads sideways into whatever rooms open off it, and drops part of what it was carrying. The result is a property with three quite different air characters: a well-scented ground floor, a middle floor that gets an inconsistent share depending on which doors are open, and a top floor that is either faint or, if the stack is strong that afternoon, oddly concentrated. If the top floor is on the route the buyer walks - and in a triplex it usually is, because the terrace and the master suite are up there - put a second source on the middle or top level and run both at a low setting on the same register.
Can I run two different fragrances on two floors of the same duplex?
No, and it is the most common expensive mistake in multi-level scenting. A duplex is a single continuous space joined by an open stair, and a buyer walks between the two floors in ten seconds, which means two registers do not present as two atmospheres. They present as a collision on the staircase, where both are audible at once and neither is clean. It is also the fastest way to make a property smell deliberately perfumed rather than well kept, and heavy or complicated scent in a viewing reads as concealment. If you are running two machines in a large duplex or a triplex, run the same register in both at the same level, and treat the pair as one system with two outlets. The only place a different scent is defensible is a washroom, which people mentally file separately - a reed diffuser there from Rs 749 does not need to match.
Is a double-height living room in a duplex a problem for coverage?
It is a multiplier rather than a problem, and it needs to be measured rather than estimated. Floor area is what everyone quotes and volume is what a machine actually serves, so a 500 sq ft double-height living room at 20 feet is 10,000 cubic feet, about 283 cubic metres, where the same footprint at ten feet would be 5,000 cubic feet, about 142 cubic metres. That one room has quietly doubled its share of the property's air. In a duplex the double-height volume is also the top of the chimney, so it is where warm scented air collects and where the level reads highest to anyone standing on the upper gallery looking down into it. Measure the tall volume separately, add it to the rest, and check the total against the rating rather than assuming the floor plan tells you the answer. WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531 with the areas and heights and we will do the arithmetic with you.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems run water-based fragrance; the Vaayu and the HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the two formats are not interchangeable. Made in India.
