Four things change across a long seated evening, and all four push in the same direction. The temperature rises. Measure the floor area of the space that is genuinely open to itself, multiply by the ceiling height to get cubic feet, and divide by 35.3 to get cubic metres. Height eats coverage, so a double-height living room with card tables in it is not a floor-plan number - a 600 sq ft room at a 20 ft ceiling is 12,000 cu ft, about 340m³ on its own. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

How long should the diffuser run during a card party?
Start it well before anyone arrives and let it run on a schedule rather than by hand, and think in terms of building a settled reservoir rather than actively scenting a room people are sitting in. A card evening runs long, so the useful pattern is a good head start in the late afternoon at a gentle level, holding through the evening at the same gentle level, rather than short bursts at higher intensity which produce a loud pocket near the machine and thin air at the far end. A timer does this better than a host does, because the host of a card night is dealing with chai, snacks, the doorbell and the score sheet. What we cannot tell you is how much fragrance any of that consumes, because there is no published consumption figure, monthly running cost or blend duration for the Vaayu, and we will not estimate one. The variables that actually drive it are your air volume, how many hours the schedule runs and the intensity setting. The card room has a split air-conditioner running all evening. Does that change anything?
It changes two things and both are worth knowing. First, air-conditioning recirculates room air rather than replacing it, so it does not clear anything from the room; it moves it around and cools it. That is why the honest sequence is to cross-ventilate the room properly in the afternoon with windows on opposite sides, and only then close up and let the air-conditioning work on air that is already clean. Second, the draught matters enormously for placement. A split unit blowing directly across a diffuser drives a concentrated stream to whatever is downstream of it, which usually means one card table gets a strong evening and the far corner gets almost nothing, and then the host raises the setting to fix the far corner and makes the near table worse. Put the source out of the direct airflow, low, and at the far end from the tables or in the connected passage, and let the room's own circulation distribute it evenly. We make no air-purification or air-quality claims for fragrance in any of this.
Nobody in the room can smell it after an hour. Should I add more?
No, and this is the single most expensive mistake available at a card party. What has happened is that every nose in the room, yours included, has stopped reporting a smell that has not changed - this takes minutes, not hours, and it is the ordinary way noses work rather than a failure of the fragrance. The room almost certainly still smells exactly as it did. If you add more, the people in it will not notice the increase either, because they are adapted, so you will probably add more again an hour later, and the person who arrives at eleven for one last round walks into the accumulated result with a completely fresh nose. The reliable way to find out what your room actually smells like is to step outside the front door for three to five minutes with it closed behind you, then walk back in as a guest would. That first breath is the truth. Judge from that, and change the setting downward far more often than upward.
Should I light a scented candle on the card table instead?
Please do not put one on the card table, and at Diwali think carefully about it anywhere. A candle on a table where people are leaning across, dealing, reaching for snacks and moving glasses for six hours is a flame in a busy place, and a Diwali house already has diyas and lamps in it and long sleeves and dupattas near low surfaces. Beyond the safety point, a candle is also the wrong tool for this job: it scents the air immediately around it, which is exactly where the players are sitting, so the people at that table get a strong evening and the rest of the room gets very little. If you want the room to feel warm and cared for, do it with light rather than with flame on the table - lamps set away from where people are reaching - and let the fragrance come from a source at the far end of the room or in the passage. Never place a diffuser, reed bottle or machine near any diya, lamp or candle either.
What about the smell the morning after?
It is largely a fabric problem rather than an air problem, which is why the fix is cleaning rather than more fragrance. Over a long evening the sofa, the curtains, the rug and the cushions absorb airborne oil from the fried snacks, whatever came in from the balcony, and the fragrance itself, and they release all of it slowly back into the room for a day or two. So the morning after, open the room fully for genuine cross-flow, take the cushion covers and any throws for a wash, vacuum the sofa and the rug properly, empty and wash the ashtrays outside, and clear the glasses and plates before you do anything else. Running your diffuser harder the next morning adds a fresh layer on top of what is already there and produces a more complicated smell rather than a cleaner one. Once the room is genuinely aired and clean, put the same gentle register back on its ordinary schedule and it will read as a well-kept house again within the hour.
