Founder Diaries · Dhanteras & Festive Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
This is a narrower question than it looks, and it is not really about fragrance. An attar starts at ₹379 and a reed diffuser at ₹749, so on any list of size they are not the same decision - but the price gap is the least interesting difference between them. What separates them is who has to have taste, how the thing gets home from wherever you handed it over, and who in the recipient's household ends up using it.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, from Rs 749
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon and mint reed diffuser from ₹749 →
The reed leads this comparison because it wins the axis that matters most on a corporate list: it asks nothing about the recipient's personal taste. ₹749 in 50ml, running about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to plug in - against an attar at ₹379 that is half the entry price and infinitely easier to carry home, but is a judgement about a person you may barely know.
Quick answers — read this first
Which is better for corporate gifting, an attar or a reed diffuser? A reed diffuser if you do not know the recipients, because a room has no taste to guess. An attar if the band matters or the gift has to travel in a pocket: ₹379 against ₹749 at the entry size is a real difference across a list.

Does an attar require you to know the person? Yes. A worn fragrance is a taste decision. A reed diffuser is a placement decision, which is why it is the safer corporate gift - and why the Attar Trio from ₹1,055 exists, since three scents let the recipient decide instead.

Which one is easier to hand over at an event? The attar, comfortably. A 3ml roll-on goes into a jacket pocket. A 50ml reed diffuser is a glass bottle of oil plus reeds, which somebody has to carry home carefully, usually along with everything else they were given.
The short answer
Short answer: For a corporate list, a reed diffuser from Rs 749 is the safer gift because it asks nothing about the recipient's personal taste, and an attar from Rs 379 is the cheaper and far more portable one. Attars tier by 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Reeds tier by 50ml and 130ml and run about 6 to 10 weeks. The Attar Trio from Rs 1,055 is the middle path.
The pick: A 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 when you do not know the people, an attar from ₹379 when the gift has to travel or the band has to be tighter.
Why: The reed removes the taste question entirely and reaches a whole household; the attar is a third of the entry price, fits in a pocket and is the only one of the two that is genuinely easy to hand over at an event.
Choosing a Dhanteras fragrance gift - at a glanceWorn on a person - attar from ₹379, perfume from ₹599Lives in a home - reed diffuser from ₹749, duo set from ₹1,498Lives in a car - hanging or spray from ₹449, Safar ₹3,999A whole large home or a business - SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999
The one question that settles most Dhanteras fragrance gifts: where will it live? A scent worn on a person is a taste decision and needs you to know them. A scent that lives in a room or a car is a placement decision and needs you to know their space - which is usually the easier thing to be sure of.
Straight answer
Should a corporate Dhanteras gift be a reed diffuser or an attar?
Both are defensible, and the choice turns on four practical things rather than on which fragrance is nicer. Entry price: a 3ml attar is ₹379 to ₹399 and a 50ml reed diffuser is ₹749 to ₹849, which is a real gap once a list is long. Taste: an attar is worn on a person and therefore requires you to have guessed their taste correctly, while a reed diffuser sits in a room and requires nothing of the sort - a console table has no opinion about jasmine. Carriage: a roll-on goes home in a pocket, a 50ml glass bottle with reeds does not, which matters enormously if you are handing gifts over at an event people travel home from. Reach: an attar is used by one person, while a reed diffuser is experienced by everybody who lives in that home, which is either a bonus or an intrusion depending on how well you know them. If you want the middle path, the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 keeps the portability of an attar while handing the taste decision to the recipient. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The real question is not which smells better. It is whether you are prepared to make a taste judgement on behalf of somebody you have met twice.
Attar from ₹379 - a third of the entry price, fits in a pocket, but it is a taste decision. Reed diffuser from ₹749 - no taste judgement required, runs about 6 to 10 weeks, but it is glass and it has to be carried.
Reed diffusers from ₹749

The three axes that actually separate a reed diffuser from an attar on a corporate list

Put the two products side by side and the differences that matter to a corporate buyer are not the ones a product page talks about. These three are the ones that decide it, and the third is the one people only discover on the evening itself.

1
The first axis
What it costs per recipient at the entry size
At the smallest serious size, an attar is ₹379 for Adaa, ₹385 for Ameeri, ₹389 for Mastani and ₹399 for Nawaab in 3ml. A reed diffuser starts at ₹749 for Morning Freshness, ₹799 for Garden Bloom and Evening Calm and ₹849 for Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew in 50ml. That is roughly double at the entry point, and on a list of any length the difference is structural rather than cosmetic.

The useful way to think about it is not which is cheaper but which band your tier actually sits in. If a tier sits below ₹500, the reed diffuser simply is not in the conversation - the cheapest one is ₹749 and stretching a page to pretend otherwise would be dishonest. If the tier sits comfortably above ₹749, the reed becomes available and the argument moves to the other two axes, where it usually wins.
Tip: Below Rs 500 a tier, this is not a comparison - only the attar exists in that band.
2
The second axis
Who has to have taste - you, or the recipient
An attar is worn on skin. That makes it a taste decision, and on a corporate list you are making that decision for people whose preferences you have never been told. A wrong guess is a wasted gift no matter how good the oil is, and no amount of budget improves the odds - a more expensive perfume is not a more accurate guess.

A reed diffuser is a placement decision. It sits on a console or a counter and does its work passively for about 6 to 10 weeks, and nobody has to like it the way they have to like something on their own wrist. That is the single strongest argument for the reed on a corporate list. The middle path is the Attar Trio at ₹1,055, which keeps the format of an attar and moves the choice of scent to the person who is going to wear it.
3
The third axis
How it goes home, and who ends up using it
This is the one that surprises people. If your gifts are handed over at an event, a conference or a meeting, everybody leaves carrying whatever they were given. A 3ml roll-on disappears into a jacket pocket. A 50ml reed diffuser is a glass bottle of oil plus a bundle of reeds, and the recipient has to carry it carefully, usually alongside a laptop bag and three other gifts. If people are travelling home by train or flight, that matters a great deal.

Reach cuts the other way. An attar is used by one person. A reed diffuser is experienced by an entire household - partner, parents, children, anybody who walks through that room - which makes it a larger gesture for the same money and also a more presumptuous one. For a client you know well, that is a bonus. For a recent acquaintance, a scent that fills their living room for six to ten weeks is a stronger statement than you may have intended.
Tip: Handing gifts over at an event? The pocket-sized one is the kinder choice.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
How to settle the reed versus attar question for one corporate tier
  1. Check the band first: under Rs 500 only the attar exists, since reeds start at Rs 749.
  2. Ask whether you can name a scent any of these recipients already wear.
  3. If you cannot, take the reed, or take the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 instead.
  4. If the gifts are handed over at an event, favour the pocket-sized attar.
The SOSA principle
A worn fragrance asks the giver to be right about a person. A room fragrance asks the giver to be right about a room. On a corporate list you know far more about the second than the first, and that is the whole comparison in one line.
Everything else - price, reach, portability - is a refinement on that single distinction.

How each one tiers, and what to do about the scent choice

Scent choice behaves differently in the two formats. With attars you are picking something a person will wear all day, so the least divisive option is usually right for a wide tier: Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac over white musk, the daytime one; Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, the formal one; Ameeri at ₹385 and Mastani at ₹389 are the warmer rose and jasmine characters. With reeds you are picking something for a room somebody else lives in, so Morning Freshness at ₹749, lemon and mint, is the easiest choice across a mixed list, while Fresh Brew at ₹849, coffee and vanilla, has more character and correspondingly more opinion attached to it.

The SOSA scent edit
Attar against reed diffuser, on the four axes that decide it
Scent Why it suits the mood
Cost at the entry size · ₹379 against ₹749 An attar is ₹379 to ₹399 in 3ml. A reed diffuser is ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml. Roughly double, and that gap is the first thing to check against the band your tier sits in - because if the tier sits under ₹500, the reed is simply not an option and the comparison ends there.
Whether you must judge their taste · the decisive axis The attar is worn, so it needs you to have guessed right about a person. The reed sits in a room, so it needs nothing of the sort. On a list of people you have met twice, that is the strongest argument on this page - and the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 is the compromise, because the recipient picks from three.
How it gets carried home · pocket against glass A 3ml roll-on goes in a jacket pocket and is forgotten until it is used. A 50ml reed diffuser is glass and liquid with a bundle of reeds, and somebody has to carry it home along with everything else. If you hand gifts over at an event, this axis often outweighs the others.
Who experiences it, and how it tiers · one person or a household An attar is used by one person and tiers 3ml, 6ml, 12ml - ₹379 to ₹1,199. A reed diffuser is experienced by everybody in the home for about 6 to 10 weeks and tiers 50ml to 130ml, ₹749 to ₹1,349, with duo sets from ₹1,498. Wider reach is a bigger gesture, and a more presumptuous one.

See the reed duo sets →

One honest note before you decide. Do not buy a reed diffuser for a corporate list on the grounds that it looks more expensive - buy it because it removes a judgement you are not equipped to make. And do not buy an attar simply because it is ₹379; buy it because it travels, because the tier sits in that band, or because you have chosen the Trio and let the recipient settle the scent. Branding on either is custom label or logo on the product, with no box, card, ribbon or assembly service, and quantities are discussed on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.

₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The SOSA gifting range

There are only three questions worth asking before you spend anything. Will the gift be worn on a person, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to know what they already wear? Will it live in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser or a duo set is the safer buy? Or will it live in a car, where the choice is really between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray, and where SOSA Safar is the upgrade for somebody who genuinely spends hours driving? Answer that, then pick the price band.

The SOSA Dhanteras gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Every year around Dhanteras I get the same message, phrased twenty different ways: I have to buy something, I do not want to buy gold again, and I do not want to hand over a box of dry fruit that everybody quietly passes on. That is a real problem and it is worth taking seriously, because the difficulty is not the budget. It is that most festive gifts are bought for the moment of handing over and then have nowhere to go.

Fragrance is unusually good at this for one unglamorous reason: it gets used up. A reed diffuser sits on a console and does something for six to ten weeks. An attar lives in a handbag and gets worn on ordinary Tuesdays. A car perfume is noticed every single morning by somebody who did not ask for it. None of that is sentiment - it is just a product that has a job, unlike an object that has to earn shelf space for a decade.

Two honest cautions, though, because I would rather you bought well than bought more. A worn fragrance is a taste decision - if you do not know what the person already wears, a perfume is a guess, and a scent for their home or their car is the safer buy. And do not spend up a tier to look generous. A ₹379 attar chosen because it suits somebody is a better gift than a ₹3,999 machine bought for a person whose car is spotless and who never noticed a smell in it. Buy the thing that fits the life, not the thing that fits the occasion.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reed diffuser or an attar the better corporate gift?
A reed diffuser is safer for people you do not know, because it suits a room rather than a personality. An attar is cheaper at entry, at Rs 379 against Rs 749, and far easier to carry home. The Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 sits between the two by letting the recipient choose the scent.
How much does each one cost at the smallest size?
Attars in 3ml are Rs 379 for Adaa, Rs 385 for Ameeri, Rs 389 for Mastani and Rs 399 for Nawaab. Reed diffusers in 50ml are Rs 749 for Morning Freshness, Rs 799 for Garden Bloom and Evening Calm, and Rs 849 for Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew.
How long does a reed diffuser last?
About 6 to 10 weeks. There is nothing to plug in and nothing to switch off. Refills are available at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml, and the 130ml bottles start at Rs 1,249.
Which one is easier to hand over at an event?
The attar. A 3ml roll-on fits in a pocket, while a 50ml reed diffuser is a glass bottle and a bundle of reeds that somebody has to carry home carefully, usually along with whatever else they were given that evening.
Can either one carry our company branding?
Custom label or logo on the product is available on SOSA products. There is no custom gift box, no printed card, no ribbon and no hamper assembly. Quantities and anything commercial are discussed on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.

Take the next step
One question settles it: can you name a scent that person already wears?
If you can, an attar from ₹379 is the considered and portable choice. If you cannot, a reed diffuser from ₹749 removes the guess, or the Attar Trio from ₹1,055 hands the guess to the person who should be making it. Quantities and custom label or logo are a WhatsApp conversation.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
