When the sliders are open your living room is effectively outdoors. When they are shut it is a sealed box with no removal path. One setting cannot be correct in both.
Quick answers — read this first
How does alternating between open windows and air conditioning affect diffusion? Dramatically, in opposite directions. With the envelope open, air movement is unbounded so no output holds a perceptible level. Sealed, there is almost no removal path so output accumulates.

What is the right approach? Two documented settings with a rule for which applies, or better, scent a volume that is always in the same mode - typically an enclosed entrance hall rather than an open-plan living space.

What is the common mistake? A single middle setting, which is too weak to be perceived when the house is open and too strong once it is sealed - so the house reads as nothing half the time and as heavy the other half.
The short answer
Short answer: Two buildings, two settings. Open holds nothing; sealed accumulates. A middle number is wrong twice.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large reception, Sukoon (₹1,899) or Boond (₹899) for a normal reception or consultation room, reeds from ₹749 where no machine belongs - and nothing at all in clinical rooms, kitchens, chemical bays or back-of-house.
Note: SOSA makes no health, mood, productivity or spend claims. Ambient fragrance is for the air of a room.
Goa villas and hospitality - enclosed guest zones and neutral zonesStep 1 - fix the source. Damp, AC condensate, closed-up rooms and kitchen air come firstStep 2 - open corridors, verandahs, pools and beaches hold nothing. EverStep 3 - the enclosed arrival volume gets one register, set low (from ₹299)Step 4 - count enclosed volumes per property, not acreage or villa countNo health or spend claims · alcohol-free · made in India
Goa changes a scenting decision in three ways: coastal humidity and a long monsoon that leaves closed houses smelling of the weeks nobody opened them, an architecture of open verandahs, courtyards and sliding walls where air movement is unbounded and fragrance cannot hold at all, and a portfolio structure where the same arrival has to repeat across twenty properties, different owners and different housekeepers. So the order is: fix the moisture and the ventilation first, accept that the open-air parts of the property get nothing, then give the enclosed arrival volume one quiet register on a timer. Coverage stops at the first closed door, which is why machine counts follow enclosed volumes per property rather than acreage or the number of villas on the roster.
Straight answer
How does alternating between open windows and full air conditioning affect fragrance in a villa?
It affects it more than any other variable in your house, and it pushes in opposite directions, which is why one setting cannot serve both. Open mode. Sliders back, verandah doors folded, a breeze through the house - which is the entire point of good Goa architecture and nobody should close it up for a diffuser. In that state air movement is unbounded, so output is diluted and carried away as fast as it is produced and the room cannot reach a perceptible level at any setting. A machine running then is emptying itself into the garden. Sealed mode. Everything shut, air conditioning recirculating, and now there is almost no removal path at all, so concentration climbs for as long as the device runs rather than settling. The same number that vanished an hour ago now builds into something heavier than you intended. So the mistake is the obvious compromise: a middle setting, which is imperceptible half the time and too much the other half. Two better answers. Either scent a volume that is always in the same mode - an enclosed entrance hall, a lobby, an air-conditioned enclosed room - which is why a Boond at ₹899 in a hallway often outperforms a large machine in a beautiful open living room. Or write two settings with a rule: this number when the house is closed, nothing at all when it is open. One register from ₹299, two documented numbers, and no guessing. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: two buildings, two settings. Open holds nothing, sealed accumulates, and a middle number fails twice.
For a large reception or showroom the machine is usually the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, around 1000m³, with an app and timer so business hours and a low setting are fixed once. For a normal reception, a cabin or a client lounge, Megh ₹3,499, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Boond ₹899 with the Hotel Collection from ₹299. Clinical rooms, kitchens and back-of-house get nothing.
from ₹299

You have two buildings sharing one address, and they need two answers - because the setting that is right for a sealed house is wrong for an open one, and the compromise is wrong for both

This is the most consequential technical question in Goa scenting and it is asked far less often than it should be, because most people think of a villa as one building. It is not. A house whose living space opens through sliding or folding walls operates in two completely different physical regimes, and a register calibrated for one is wrong for the other in a predictable direction. Regime one: open. The sliders are back, the verandah doors are folded away, and the living space is continuous with a deck or a garden. This is what the architecture is for, it is why people pay a premium for these houses, and closing it up to make a diffuser work would be an absurd inversion of priorities. In this state the room has no meaningful envelope. Air moves through it driven by breeze and by buoyancy, and the exchange rate is effectively unbounded - which means that whatever a device produces is diluted and swept out at roughly the rate it is produced. There is no output level at which the room reaches a perceptible concentration, because the denominator is not the room, it is the outdoors. This is the same reason a verandah, a courtyard, a pool deck or a porte-cochere cannot hold a fragrance at all, and it is the single most common way money is wasted in Goa hospitality scenting. So in open mode, the honest setting is off. Regime two: sealed. Everything is shut - against heat, against rain, against insects in the evening - and the air conditioning is running, which recirculates room air over a cold coil rather than introducing outside air. Now the exchange rate collapses to whatever leakage the envelope has, which in a modern villa with good glazing is very little. Air changes are the only mechanism a building has for removing anything from its own atmosphere, so with them suppressed, concentration does not settle at a steady state quickly; it climbs for as long as the device runs. The practical result is that the same machine at the same setting, which produced nothing detectable in open mode an hour ago, now builds steadily into something noticeably heavier than you designed - and it does so fastest on a hot afternoon, because volatility rises with temperature. So the two regimes push in opposite directions: dilution in one, accumulation in the other. That is why the instinctive solution fails. The instinct is to find a middle setting that works well enough either way. There is no such setting. A level high enough to be perceived when the house is open is a level that accumulates uncomfortably once it is closed, and a level appropriate to a sealed house is undetectable the moment a slider opens. A compromise number gives you a house that reads as nothing for half its life and as heavy for the other half, which is worse than either extreme because it is inconsistent - and inconsistency is the one thing that prevents a register becoming something a returning guest or family member recognises. Two better answers, and the first is usually the right one. Answer one: scent a volume that stays in the same mode. Most Goa villas have somewhere that is always enclosed - an entrance hall, an internal lobby, a stair hall, a snug or an air-conditioned enclosed sitting room. That volume has a stable envelope, so it has a stable setting, and it is very often also where the arrival transition actually happens: your guest or your family crosses from outside into that space first, and the step they perceive is at that threshold rather than in the living room. This is why a Boond at ₹899 in a modest enclosed hallway frequently outperforms a much larger machine in a beautiful open living room. It is also a better use of the arrival moment: perception is a change detector, so what matters is the step at the door, not the ambient level of the largest space. Answer two: two documented settings with a rule for which applies. Written on the property schedule: when the house is closed and air-conditioned, this machine at this number for this run window; when the living space is open, off. If the property is a rental, the rule belongs on the housekeeping card in one line, because it has to be executable by somebody who is not thinking about physics. If it is an owner-occupied second home, it belongs in the handover notes and, if the house is automated, in the scene documentation - and the cleanest version is to tie the register scene to the same trigger as the cooling, so that closed-and-cooled is the only state in which the machine runs at all. Three secondary effects worth knowing, because they modify both regimes. Air-conditioning throw. In sealed mode the supply grilles are moving a lot of air, and a device placed in front of a supply will have its output swept across the room and diluted, while a device near a return will have its output drawn straight out of the space. Place the machine a few metres inside the zone and clear of both, and if the position must be near a grille, move the device rather than raising the number. Door traffic. In a holiday house with a pool, the door to the deck is opened constantly, which exchanges air even in nominally sealed mode - so the schedule should concentrate on the arrival, when the door is shut and somebody is walking in, rather than trying to hold a level through a day of traffic. Stratification. In a double-height living volume, warm air rises and takes a good deal of the released material with it, so a large fraction of your output ends up in the air above head height where nobody is breathing. That is the physical reason double-height rooms are expensive to scent and the strongest argument for scenting the entrance instead, where the ceiling is a normal height and the transition is real. The thing not to do, which we see often enough to name: do not close the house up in order to make the fragrance work. A Goa villa with its sliders open on a January evening is the best version of that house, and no ambient register is worth trading it for. And do not respond to the open-mode problem by buying a bigger machine, because the limit is not output, it is the denominator - an unbounded space cannot be scented at any price, and a ₹11,999 machine empties into a garden exactly as effectively as an ₹899 one. Finally, the seasonal overlay, because in Goa the two regimes are also a calendar. From roughly October to May the house is open for much of the day and sealed at night and in the hottest hours; from June to September it is sealed almost continuously. That means the sealed-mode setting is the one that matters most in the monsoon, and it should be the lower of your two numbers rather than the higher - which is the opposite of what most owners do, since the instinct in the monsoon is to raise the level against the damp. That instinct is wrong twice over: a sealed house accumulates, and fragrance over damp gives you both. On register, for a house that lives in two modes: one composition, chosen once, is the thing that stays constant while the numbers change. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, and White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, are our two recommendations for a coastal property. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, suits timber, laterite and greenery. All alcohol-free and made to IFRA standards. And the standing exclusions: nothing in kitchens, bathrooms, verandahs, courtyards, balconies or pool decks, nothing in bedrooms overnight, nothing injected into the air-conditioning system. SOSA makes no health, mood or review-score claims.

1
Open mode has no denominator
So no setting reaches a perceptible level
With sliders back and a breeze through, output is diluted and carried away as fast as it is produced. The room is effectively outdoors, and a machine running into it is emptying into the garden.
Tip: And a ₹11,999 machine does that exactly as well as an ₹899 one.
2
Sealed mode has no removal path
So the same number climbs instead of settling
Air changes are the only way a building removes anything, and a shut air-conditioned villa has very few. Concentration builds for as long as the device runs, fastest on a hot afternoon.
3
So the compromise setting fails twice
Imperceptible half the time, heavy the other half
Either scent a volume that is always enclosed - an entrance hall or lobby, where the arrival transition actually happens - or write two numbers with a rule: this when closed, nothing when open.
Tip: Never close the house up to make the fragrance work.
The SOSA principle
When the sliders are back, your living room is outdoors.
No output level changes that, and no price does either.

One register, two documented numbers

One composition, chosen once, is what stays constant while the numbers change with the mode. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, and White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, are our two recommendations for a coastal property. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, suits timber, laterite and greenery. In a double-height volume remember stratification: warm air rises and carries much of your output above head height, which is the physical argument for scenting the entrance instead.

The SOSA commercial edit for Goa

Every SOSA product here is alcohol-free and made in small batches in India, and everything below applies to customer-facing zones only. Clinical and procedure rooms, kitchens and pantries, chemical or detailing bays, sanitary areas and back-of-house are not scented, and that is a boundary rather than a preference - somebody undressed, sedated or immobile cannot object to the air, a kitchen should smell of what it is cooking, and a workshop needs extraction rather than perfume. Covered outdoor areas cannot hold fragrance at all. Fix what the building is producing at source before adding anything, because fragrance combines with dust, pantry smells and chemical odours rather than removing them. SOSA makes no health, mood, productivity or spend claims. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit.

The SOSA commercial edit for Goa
For enclosed guest zones only - open-air areas, kitchens and dining rooms get nothing
Product Best for Why it works From
SOSA Vaayu Large villas, double-height living rooms, hotel lobbies Waterless cold-air nebuliser, around 1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer so business hours and a low setting are fixed once instead of remembered daily ₹11,999
SOSA Megh (6L) + Hotel Collection Mid-size villa living areas & long guest stays 6-litre tank, so no machine is serviced during customer hours - which is itself a source of inconsistency ₹3,499
SOSA Sukoon (500ml) + Hotel Collection Standard villa arrival area, boutique reception 500ml with a timer. The workhorse for a normal customer-facing room ₹1,899
SOSA Boond (300ml) + Hotel Collection Bedrooms, bridal suites, small enclosed lounges 300ml mini - one per small enclosed room rather than over-driving a larger machine down a corridor ₹899
Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed Heritage rooms, bedrooms, no-plug corners Alcohol-free reed oil, no power, no water, nothing humming and no dial for anybody to adjust mid-meeting. 50ml lasts six to ten weeks ₹749
The boundaries, stated plainly. SOSA makes no health, therapeutic, mood, productivity, dwell-time or spend claims of any kind. Ambient fragrance is for the air of a room. It does not treat or affect any condition, it does not improve concentration, alertness or wellbeing, and it does not make anybody buy more - and no commercial proposal should suggest otherwise. Some zones are never scented - clinical and procedure rooms, treatment areas, dental operatories, any room where a patient is undressed, sedated or immobile, kitchens and pantries, food-preparation areas, active workshop and chemical bays, sanitary areas and back-of-house or utility spaces, which need extraction rather than fragrance. Covered outdoor and semi-outdoor areas cannot hold fragrance at all, because air movement there is unbounded, so scenting a porte-cochere, verandah or open atrium edge is spending money on evaporation. Fix the source before adding anything: street dust, loaded HVAC filters and coils, drains and dried traps, pantry and food smells, damp, and chemical or workshop odours are real building problems, and fragrance combines with them rather than removing them. Provide a fragrance-free seating option and route where customers wait, and give every customer-facing device an off switch staff may use without asking, written down. On the three systems: reed diffusers use alcohol-free reed oil with no power or water; ultrasonic diffusers (Boond, Sukoon, Megh) run the water-based Hotel Collection at three to six drops per tank, rinsed between scents; the Vaayu is a waterless cold-air nebuliser running its own supplied scent sets - the water-based fragrance is not for it, and reed oil must never go into any machine. The seven registers are SOSA's own interpretations composed in India: SOSA is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand, and hotel names are trademarks of their owners used only to describe a scent style. SOSA does not create bespoke or custom-composed registers for individual businesses. Volume pricing is quoted against a zone list on WhatsApp. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Most Goa properties that call us are already beautiful, and the question underneath the question is usually the same: why does a house that photographs like a hotel not feel like one when the guest walks in. Part of the answer is air, and part of it is not. So before we sell anybody a machine we ask what the building is currently producing - a monsoon that shut the house for six weeks, an AC condensate tray nobody drained, wardrobes and mattresses that have been quietly absorbing coastal humidity, a kitchen two doors from the living room, a drain in a bathroom that dried out while the villa was closed. Fragrance combines with all of that rather than removing it, so a register over an unaddressed damp source gives you both smells at once plus the clear impression that somebody was covering something.

The second thing I insist on is the neutral list. Clinical and procedure rooms, kitchens and pantries, chemical bays, sanitary areas and back-of-house get nothing. A patient who is undressed or immobile cannot object to the air, a kitchen should smell of what it is cooking, and a workshop needs extraction rather than perfume. Covered outdoor areas cannot hold fragrance at all. That list is shorter than the list of rooms you can compose, and holding it is what separates a considered building from a sprayed one.

And to be plain about what we do not claim: we make no health, mood, productivity, dwell-time or spend claims. Ambient fragrance does not improve focus, does not affect wellbeing and does not make anybody buy more. It gives a room clean, consistent, composed air, which is worth paying for and is the whole of it. We also make seven registers rather than bespoke ones, and I would rather say so now than let anybody imagine otherwise. Made in India, and a part of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

How does alternating open and air-conditioned affect fragrance?
Dramatically and in opposite directions. Open, air movement is unbounded so nothing holds a perceptible level. Sealed, there is almost no removal path so output accumulates for as long as the device runs.
Why does a middle setting not work?
Because a level high enough to be perceived in an open house accumulates uncomfortably once it is closed, and a level suited to a sealed house is undetectable the moment a slider opens.
What is the best solution?
Scent a volume that never changes mode - an enclosed entrance hall or lobby, which is usually where the arrival transition actually happens anyway. A small machine there beats a large one in an open room.
Should I buy a bigger machine for the open living space?
No. The limit is not output, it is the denominator. An unbounded space cannot be scented at any price, and a large machine empties into the garden as effectively as a small one.
Which setting matters most in the monsoon?
The sealed one, and it should be the lower of the two numbers - because a shut house accumulates, and raising the level against monsoon damp gives a guest damp and fragrance together.

Facts verified September 2026: SOSA makes no health, therapeutic, mood, productivity, dwell-time or spend claims of any kind. Ambient fragrance is for the air of a room only; it does not treat, prevent, diagnose or affect any condition, does not improve concentration, alertness, wellbeing or mood, and does not influence purchase behaviour, spend or time spent in a space. SOSA recommends that the following zones remain fragrance-free: clinical, procedure and treatment rooms, dental operatories, any room where a person is undressed, sedated or immobile, kitchens, pantries and food-preparation areas, active workshop, detailing or chemical bays, sanitary areas, and back-of-house or utility spaces, all of which require extraction rather than fragrance. Covered outdoor and semi-outdoor areas cannot hold a perceptible fragrance level because air movement there is unbounded. Characteristic commercial-building odours arise from street dust and outdoor air, loaded HVAC filters and coils, condensate drain pans and dried floor traps, food and pantry activity, damp and monsoon humidity, cleaning chemistry such as strong phenyl and pine disinfectants, and workshop or detailing chemicals; these are addressed by filtration and maintenance, extraction, drain and trap checks, surface-chemistry selection and adequate air-change rates, not by ambient fragrance, which combines with an existing odour rather than removing it. A diffuser scents the volume of air that mixes freely around it, so coverage stops at the first closed door and device counts follow enclosed volumes rather than floor area; high ceilings, glass facades, strong air-conditioning throw and frequent door movement all reduce the level a given output achieves. Volatility rises with temperature, so the same setting reads stronger in a hot afternoon than a cool morning. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air nebuliser with Bluetooth app and timer, around 1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999, supplied with four hotel-inspired scents. Ultrasonic cool-mist diffusers: Boond 300ml ₹899, Sukoon 500ml ₹1,899, Megh 6L ₹3,499, each supplied with three hotel-inspired scents. The Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for ultrasonic diffusers only - 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799, at three to six drops per tank with the tank rinsed between scents; it is not for reed diffusers or waterless nebulisers, and raw essential or carrier oils must never be used in an ultrasonic machine. Reed diffusers use alcohol-free reed oil with no power or water: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 for 50ml, 130ml from ₹1,249, refills ₹2,399 for 300ml and ₹3,499 for 500ml; a 50ml bottle lasts roughly six to ten weeks in calm air. The seven registers are SOSA's own interpretations composed in India - Quiet Luxury (white tea, bergamot, cedar), White Tea Serenity (white tea, aloe, cedar), Forest Suite (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves), Old-World Glamour (amber, violet, woods), Tea Garden (jasmine, green tea, white tea), Warm Welcome (citrus, floral, sandalwood) and Lobby Bar (citrus, pepper, amber).
