Why is the oil overwhelming at the bottle and almost absent across the room?
Because you took two readings that were never comparable. 1. At the cap you are smelling liquid. Fragrance oil is concentrate, and the air trapped in the neck of the bottle is saturated with it. That is the highest number your nose will ever report from that product, and it tells you about the formula, not about your room. 2. On the reeds it is still nearly neat. The sticks are wet with the same undiluted oil, which is why leaning in to check them is always reassuring and never predictive. 3. In the room it is dispersed. A 120 sq ft bedroom at a 10 ft ceiling holds 1,200 cubic feet of air, about 34m³. Everything the reeds release has to spread through all of it, so the concentration your nose meets two metres away is a tiny fraction of what it meets at the cap. 4. And nothing is carrying it. Reading one
The bottle is a measurement of the formula, not of your home
Put your nose over an open bottle of fragrance oil and you are sampling air that has been sitting in contact with undiluted concentrate, in a space the size of a thumb. It is saturated. Nothing you ever smell in a room will come close to it, and nothing is supposed to. That reading tells you something genuinely useful - that the oil is properly concentrated, that the composition has body, that you have not been sold coloured water - and then it stops being useful, because it says nothing at all about what will happen once that oil has to spread through a room. This is why the bottle test misleads so many people so confidently. It feels like a test of strength, and it is: it is a test of the liquid's strength, taken at the one place in your home where the liquid is undiluted. Your room is the opposite condition. Between those two points sits an enormous amount of air, and the bottle reading knows nothing about it.

Reading two
Between the reeds and your bed, the arithmetic changes everything
Work the volume once and the mystery dissolves. A modest 120 sq ft bedroom under a 10 ft ceiling holds 120 x 10 = 1,200 cubic feet of air, which divided by 35.3 is about 34 cubic metres. A larger 150 sq ft bedroom holds 1,500 cubic feet, about 42 cubic metres. Every molecule the reeds release has to distribute itself through that entire volume, and the release itself is slow and continuous rather than sudden, because passive evaporation is a trickle by design. So what reaches your nose across the room is not a weakened version of the bottle smell. It is a completely different order of concentration, arrived at by dividing a small continuous release into a very large box of air. Then subtract what leaves: a ceiling fan stirring, an air conditioner circulating, a door standing open. The reeds cannot release faster to compensate, because nothing in a passive object has a dial. The formula never changed between the cap and the bed. The denominator did.

Nothing in the design is carrying the fragrance to you
Here is the part that decides everything, and it has nothing to do with the oil. In a reed diffuser, fragrance moves by evaporation and then by whatever the room's own air currents happen to do with it. There is no fan, no pump, no heat, no nebuliser - nothing that adds energy or direction. So the fragrance builds a gradient: strongest in the air immediately around the bottle, thinner a step away, thinner again beyond that. Raising the concentration of the liquid lifts that whole gradient a little, but it does not change its shape and it does not extend its reach, because reach is not a property of the liquid at all. It is a property of whether anything is moving the air. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. What it is not is the reason your room reads quiet. Even a hypothetically thicker, more concentrated liquid would still be released by slow passive evaporation into the same tens of cubic metres of air, with nothing carrying it outward. The reservoir is not the constraint. The delivery method is.
Should I get a bigger bottle for a stronger room scent?
A 130ml bottle from Rs 1,249 holds more oil, so it lasts longer before it needs replacing, and if you love the fragrance that is a perfectly good reason to buy one. It will not project further. How much oil is sitting in the reservoir has no bearing on how fast it evaporates or on what the room does with it once it has; those are set by the reeds, the room's warmth and the room's air movement. So a bigger bottle buys you fewer replacements, not more reach. It is worth being clear about this before you spend, because the two things feel related and are not. If reach is what you want, the money is better spent on something that actually moves air.
Why does the fragrance smell wonderful on my hands but not in the room?
For exactly the same reason it smells wonderful at the cap. A drop on skin is concentrate sitting a few centimetres from your nose, warmed by your body, with almost no air between the source and the receiver. That is the best possible condition for smelling anything. Your room is the worst version of the same test: a tiny continuous release, a large volume, and a metre or two of air in the way. Neither result is more truthful than the other. They are just two points on the same steep curve, and the curve is steep because passive diffusion has no way to flatten it. This is also why the moment you walk close to the bottle the fragrance reappears instantly - you have moved yourself back to the strong end.
Does the fragrance get weaker as the bottle empties?
It changes gradually rather than switching off. As the level drops, less liquid is available to the reeds and the reeds themselves slowly become saturated with the heavier fragrance materials, so the evaporation rate eases and the character can shift a little over the six to ten weeks a SOSA reed diffuser runs. Flipping the reeds once a week freshens the wet surface and helps, and it is the one bit of maintenance worth doing. But if the room was quiet in week one it will not be the bottle emptying that explains it, and a fresh bottle will reproduce exactly the same result. A change over time is a maintenance question. A room that never smelled of it is a mechanism question, and those need different answers.
If the oil is this concentrated, is it safe to have in a bedroom?
Used as intended, yes, and gentleness is the whole design of a reed. It releases a very small amount continuously rather than a burst, which is why a reed diffuser is one of the quietest ways to scent a room where people sleep. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, stand it on a coaster or a tray because concentrated oil can mark polished and painted surfaces, and wash your hands after handling the reeds. The one rule we would state firmly for any fragrance in any home is that ventilation and cleaning come first, and that anyone in the house reporting a headache or discomfort is a signal to turn the fragrance down or move it, not something to argue with. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, and gentle dosing is always the default.
