Why is a big gift a bad idea after a bad week? Because it has to be responded to. A large parcel arrives with an implied scale of reaction - surprise, gratitude, a phone call she has to be bright on - and somebody at the end of a terrible week has none of that spare. A small thing can be received quietly, which is the only way it helps you rather than costing her.
What is the smallest thing worth sending? A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 or a candle at ₹399. Below that the range stops having real gifts in it: wax melts at ₹499 need a ₹599 burner and the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is fuel for an ultrasonic machine, so neither is a present on its own.
How small is small enough, and how to tell when you have gone too big
Sizing a gift is usually a budget exercise. After a bad week it is not - it is a question about how much of her remaining energy the parcel will consume on its way in. These three checks tell you whether the thing in your basket is the right size or one notch too large.
So count in units of effort rather than rupees. A 3ml attar at ₹389 costs her almost nothing to receive. A ₹399 candle costs her one decision, which is when to light it. A ₹1,498 reed duo costs her a phone call she has to perform. The sums run the same way every time, and they are the real reason the small thing works better - not thrift, arithmetic.
What passes the check: an attar, which is a bottle that goes in a bag. A candle, which asks one thing, that it be lit. A reed diffuser at ₹749 in 50ml, which asks nothing at all for about 6 to 10 weeks and is the right call if she has genuinely nothing spare - though at that price it is the top of the sensible band rather than the middle of it.
SOSA encloses no printed card and there is no note-with-the-order service, so the words are yours to send whatever you buy - a text, a voice note, a call. Two plain lines naming the actual thing that went wrong do more than anything in any catalogue. If the choice is between the bigger gift and ringing her, ring her. The parcel sits alongside turning up and never in place of it, and if what she is dealing with is more than a hard week, the person who helps may need to be a professional.
- Halve whatever you first reached for. Then check it is above Rs 379.
- Ask what she has to do to receive it. More than open it is too big.
- Rule out anything needing a socket, water, a burner or a surface.
- Send the two sentences yourself. No card goes in the parcel.
The shortlist at each size, with what each one costs
What actually sits inside the band, by size. At ₹379 to ₹399: a 3ml attar - Adaa at ₹379, Ameeri at ₹385, Mastani at ₹389, Nawaab at ₹399, alcohol-free oil rolled on rather than sprayed - or a hand-poured candle at ₹399 running about 15 to 18 hours. At ₹449 to ₹509: car fragrance, if she drives daily, in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price. At ₹599 to ₹699: a 10ml SOSA spray perfume at ₹599, a two-candle duo at ₹699 for about 30 to 36 hours, a ₹599 ceramic burner if she already has melts. At ₹749 to ₹999: a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 for about 6 to 10 weeks, or a Woodenwick candle at ₹999. Above ₹1,000 the range keeps going and this page stops recommending, which is the point of having a band at all.
| The option | Who it suits, and where it fails |
|---|---|
| Send nothing, ring her · ₹0 | Listed first because it is genuinely the right answer sometimes. A parcel does nothing a conversation does, and if you are only choosing between them the conversation wins. Send something small as well if you want to - alongside, never instead. This is also the answer when what she is carrying is heavier than a bad week and what she needs is a person, or a professional. |
| A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 | The smallest real gift here. Alcohol-free oil, rolled on, a bottle that lives in a handbag and asks nothing of her beyond being opened. Right when you can name what she wears. It fails on a guess, and a guess landing in a bad week is slightly worse than usual, because she will wear it once to be kind and you will both notice. |
| A candle · ₹399 to ₹699 | ₹399 for a single at about 15 to 18 hours, ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. Asks exactly one thing, that it be lit, and needs nothing known about her taste. The best size-to-meaning ratio on this list. It fails if she will not light a flame, and wax melts at ₹499 are not the workaround without a ₹599 burner. |
| A reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 | 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks, no flame, no socket, nothing to remember - the lowest-effort object SOSA makes, which is why it is on the list at all. It is also the top of the honest band, and in a young relationship ₹749 sent into a bad week can read heavier than you intend. Pick it for the effort profile, not to spend more. |
One correction people make that is worth resisting: upgrading the size because the week was especially bad. The instinct is decent and the arithmetic is backwards. A worse week means less capacity, which means a smaller parcel, not a larger one. Take the single candle rather than the duo, the 3ml rather than the 6ml, and put whatever you were going to spend on the upgrade into the sentence instead. Name the actual thing that went wrong, ask nothing of her, say no reply is needed. That is what she will still have on Thursday, and it costs nothing to send.
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.
| Gift | What it is | Who it suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOSA scented candles | Hand-poured, small batches | Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours | from ₹399 |
| SOSA attars | Alcohol-free roll-on oil | Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is | from ₹379 |
| SOSA reed diffusers | Passive home fragrance | Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks | from ₹749 |
| SOSA Attar Trio | Pack of three attars | Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear | from ₹1,055 |
| SOSA wax melts | Flameless, needs a burner | Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too | from ₹499 |
| SOSA car fragrance | Hanging or spray | Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price | from ₹449 |
| SOSA reed duo sets | Two reeds in one box | Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion | from ₹1,498 |
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
- Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
- Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
- Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
- Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.

Versailles
The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.
What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.
So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.
