Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
The constraint here is not budget and it is not effort - it is information you do not have and cannot get without ruining the surprise. A worn fragrance is a taste decision, and there is no amount of money that converts a guess into a good one. The way out is to change the category rather than the price: buy for a place instead of a person, because a room has no opinion about jasmine and the person living in it does.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, British rose and night jasmine, from Rs 799
SOSA Garden Bloom · British rose and night jasmine reed diffuser from ₹799 →
This page leads with a reed diffuser rather than a perfume for one reason: you are buying for a room, and a room has no taste to get wrong. Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, ₹799 for 50ml and ₹1,299 for 130ml, running about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to plug in. If their home is already scented on something they chose themselves, skip it and send a 3ml attar from ₹379 instead.
Quick answers — read this first
What fragrance can I gift somebody whose taste I do not know? A reed diffuser for their home. SOSA reeds are ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml and last about 6 to 10 weeks, and choosing one is a decision about a room rather than about a personality. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the least declarative of the five.

Is it a bad idea to guess somebody's perfume? It is the one part of fragrance gifting that does not reward guessing. A worn scent sits on their skin all day and has to agree with how they already smell to themselves. Buy it only when you can finish the sentence they usually wear something with...

What if I want to give something worn anyway? Then hand the choice back rather than making it. The SOSA Attar Trio at ₹1,055 puts Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three genuinely different characters, so they pick the one that suits them and the guess stops being yours.
The short answer
Short answer: Buy for a place instead of a person. A SOSA reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 for 50ml suits a room and a room has no taste, or the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 if it must be worn, because three scents in one box hands the choice back to them.
The pick: A 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749, or the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 when it has to be something worn.
Why: One removes the guess by changing what you are buying for; the other removes it by letting the person opening the box choose.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
What fragrance gift can I choose when I do not know which perfume they like?
Stop buying for their skin and start buying for their space. A 50ml SOSA reed diffuser - Morning Freshness at ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm at ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew at ₹849 - sits in a room, runs about 6 to 10 weeks, needs no socket and no switch, and asks nothing of you except an address. That is the whole trick: a worn fragrance has to agree with a person, and a room fragrance only has to suit a room. If it genuinely has to be something worn, do not spend your way past the problem either - hand the decision over instead, with the Attar Trio at ₹1,055, three 3ml bottles of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box so they choose the one that fits. For anybody who drives daily, car fragrance from ₹449 is the third route out, and the mild hanging format is the safer of the two when you do not know how strongly they like things scented. The time not to buy any of this is when their home is already scented on a system they chose themselves, because then you are competing with a decision they have already made. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
A worn fragrance has to agree with a person. A reed diffuser only has to suit a room - and you know far more about their room than about their skin.
The route out of the guess: a 50ml reed diffuser, ₹749 to ₹849. You are choosing for a room, and a room has no taste to offend.

Why a perfume guess cannot be fixed by spending more

Most advice for this question is some version of buy something neutral, which is not advice at all - there is no neutral perfume, only ones you happen not to notice. The useful move is to look at why the guess is hard in the first place, and then to pick a category where that reason does not apply.

1
The first variable
Why a worn scent is the hardest thing to guess
A perfume is not chosen the way a scarf is. It sits on somebody all day, it has to agree with how they already smell to themselves, and most people who wear fragrance regularly have arrived at what they wear through a long process of elimination that you were not present for. That is why a worn scent chosen by somebody else so often ends up on a shelf rather than in use - not because it was bad, but because it was somebody else's decision applied to their skin.

Nothing about that improves with budget. A ₹1,199 12ml attar guessed wrong is a worse outcome than a ₹379 3ml guessed wrong, because now the mistake is also expensive and visible. If you are going to guess, guess small.
Tip: Only buy something worn if you can finish this sentence: they usually wear something with...
2
The second variable
What you already know about their home
Now look at what you actually do have. You probably know whether they live in a small flat or a large one, whether they work from home, whether there is a kitchen you can smell from the front door, whether they keep windows open. That is enough to choose a reed diffuser, because the decision is about a space rather than a self-image.

Reeds are also passive, which matters when you are not there to explain anything. Sticks in a bottle, nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks per 50ml. Start at 50ml rather than 130ml for a first one: a small flat with a 130ml bottle in it is a common way to make somebody quietly resent a gift.
3
The third variable
When the answer is to hand the choice back
There is a version of this where a room gift is not what you want - you meant to give them something personal, and a diffuser in the hallway is not that. In that case the move is not to guess harder but to give them the choice. The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 is three 3ml bottles, and the three are properly different: Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron, Nawaab is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, Mastani is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose and oudh.

The gift is then the set rather than a verdict on their taste. The one caveat is that three bottles in a box looks like a set, which can read as more of an event than an ordinary Tuesday wants. If you need it lighter, a single 3ml at ₹379 with the bright, least declarative option - Adaa, bergamot and green cardamom over jasmine sambac - is the smaller way to do the same thing.
Tip: Three scents in a box is not indecision. It is the only honest way to buy worn fragrance blind.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
Choosing without knowing their taste, in four moves
  1. Try the sentence: they usually wear something with. Cannot finish it? Change category.
  2. Buy for a place. A 50ml reed diffuser, Rs 749 to Rs 849, suits a room not a person.
  3. Pick the least declarative scent, not your favourite one.
  4. If it must be worn, send the Trio at Rs 1,055 so they choose rather than you.
The SOSA principle
Not knowing somebody's taste in perfume is not a gap in your relationship with them. It is a gap in the category - most people could not name what their closest friend wears either.
So treat it as a fact about fragrance rather than a failure of attention, and buy something the fact does not apply to.

Which reed diffuser for a home you have never stood in

Choosing a reed for a home you have never stood in comes down to how much of an opinion the scent has. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint and is the least declarative of the five - it is the one to send when you know almost nothing. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night jasmine, a floral that suits a home that already has flowers in it. Evening Calm at ₹799 is lavender and chamomile - that is the name of the product and the description of the materials, nothing more. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is pine, sage and cedar, and Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla; both are distinctive enough that you should only send them to somebody whose house you can picture.

The SOSA gift edit
Four ways to give fragrance without knowing their taste
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 The main recommendation here. Passive home fragrance running about 6 to 10 weeks, no socket, no switch, and the choice is about a room rather than a personality. It fails if their home is already scented on a system they chose, or if you send the 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 into a one-bedroom flat.
The Attar Trio · ₹1,055 Three 3ml bottles - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - so the guess stops being yours and becomes their pick. The right answer when the gift has to be something worn. It fails by looking like a set, which for a gift meant to be casual can read as more of an occasion than you intended.
Car fragrance · ₹449 to ₹549 Nine scents, each as a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price. A car is a small space with a single obvious purpose, so taste matters less than in a home. It fails for somebody who barely drives, and the spray is the wrong pick when you do not know how strongly they like things scented.
A single 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 The small way to take the guess anyway, with Adaa at ₹379 the brightest and least committing of the four. Choose it when you want something worn and personal but light. It fails in exactly the way this page warns about - it is still a guess, just a cheap one, which is the only sensible kind.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

One practical note about sizes, because it is where this goes wrong most often. A reed diffuser is the one SOSA product where bigger is genuinely worse if you have misjudged the room: 50ml is the ordinary-flat size and 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 belongs in an open-plan space or a house. When you do not know the home, take the 50ml every time. Same logic on car fragrance - the hanging format is the mild one and the spray is the strong one at the same price, so blind, send the hanging.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

There is no neutral perfume, only the ones you have stopped noticing. That is why I would rather send somebody a bottle for their hallway than a verdict on their skin.

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

What fragrance gift is safest when I do not know their taste?
A reed diffuser for their home. SOSA reeds are Rs 749 to Rs 849 for 50ml and run about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness, Malabar lemon and mint, is the least declarative of the five and the sensible default for a home you have never been inside.
Should I just buy an expensive perfume to be safe?
No. Price does not improve the odds on a taste decision, it only raises what a wrong guess costs and makes it harder to ignore. If you want to spend more, spend it on the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 so the choice is theirs rather than on a single larger bottle that is still your guess.
Is a reed diffuser too impersonal as a gift?
It is less personal than something worn, and that is the point of it here. If you want something personal without guessing, the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 is the version that stays personal, because three different characters in one box is a choice offered rather than a choice imposed.
How do I choose between the five reed scents?
By how much of an opinion each one has. Morning Freshness, lemon and mint, is the quietest. Garden Bloom is rose and night jasmine. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile. Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar and Fresh Brew is coffee and vanilla, and those last two are distinctive enough to need a home you can picture.
When should I not send a home fragrance at all?
When their home is already scented on a system they picked themselves, because then you are arguing with a decision rather than adding to it. In that case send something worn and small, or ask SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with what you do know about the person.

Take the next step
Buy for the room, or hand them the choice
A 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 takes the guess out by changing what you are buying for. The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 takes it out by letting them pick from three. Car fragrance from ₹449 is the third route if they drive daily, and the mild hanging format is the safer of the two formats when you do not know their taste. Tell SOSA what you do know about the person and you will get one recommendation back.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
