And drops cannot compensate
The relationship between a machine and a room is the dominant variable and it is not adjustable after the fact. A unit designed for a bedroom, placed in an open-plan living and dining space, is being asked to fill perhaps four times the volume it was built for, and no amount of extra oil changes that - all it produces is a concentrated area near the machine and nothing at the far end, which is the classic uneven result people describe as an air-freshener effect. Sizing up and running gently produces both a stronger and a more even room, and it is the single most effective intervention available in this category.

It is worth understanding why the dosing guidance stops where it does. An ultrasonic diffuser works by vibrating a small plate at high frequency to break water into a fine mist, and it is engineered to atomise water. Fragrance oil dispersed through that water rides along with it; oil in excess does not. It separates, films the plate, and dampens the vibration, so the machine produces less mist and less fragrance while looking exactly the same. Scale, and your own nose
Before concluding that anything needs changing, rule out the two things that make a perfectly good setup seem to fail. The first is limescale: hard water leaves mineral deposits on the vibrating plate, and as they build the output falls gradually enough that nobody notices the decline, only the result. A wipe with a soft damp cloth after use and a periodic descale restores it. The second is adaptation. Your perception of a scented room collapses within about ten minutes, so the impression that a fragrance has weakened is frequently a report about your nose rather than the machine.
