The composition matters more than the count here: Evening Calm at 8.9 and Garden Bloom at 8.9 are the two softest we make. Three reeds of a 9.5 is not the same room as three reeds of an 8.9.
Do not dilute the oil. No water, no carrier oil, no decanting. Removing reeds is the reversible control; changing the liquid is not.
Keep the spare reeds. Stand them upright in a small glass on the tray. Reeds are not sold separately, so the two or three you take out are the ones you will put back for a party.
2. Use four when someone should notice it. A guest bedroom, an entryway, a bathroom used by visitors. Four reeds still sits under the dosed six, so the room stays polite, but it will greet a person coming through the door.
3. Choose a quiet composition rather than starving a loud one. Evening Calm at 8.9 on our scale is built soft on purpose — it is a sleep fragrance. Garden Bloom at 8.9 is soft but more sociable. Three reeds of Fresh Brew at 9.5 is still a coffee-and-vanilla room; the character does not thin out just because the volume does.
4. Move it away from the person, not just down in count. For a sensitive household the placement matters as much as the number: near a doorway, waist to chest height, out of the immediate breathing space of a bed, a cot or a favourite chair. Distance is free and reversible.
5. Keep the reeds you removed standing upright in a small glass on the same tray. Replacement reeds are not sold separately — an honest gap in our range — so the spares are worth looking after.
6. Never dilute the oil to make it milder, and give a new bottle forty-eight hours before you judge it. The composition is balanced as a whole, so thinning it produces a lopsided fragrance rather than a quieter one; and every new bottle spikes for a day or three as dry reeds saturate. Mild is what you have on day four.

Part one — who a mild setting is actually for
There are three quite different households behind the question, and they need different answers. One has a person in it whose body reacts to fragrance. One has a room whose physics do the amplifying — small, closed, low ceiling, no moving air. And one simply has a taste for restraint: they want the house to smell clean and considered rather than perfumed. Only the first of those is about safety; the other two are about design. Naming which one you are saves you from over-correcting, because the fix for a migraine household is not the same as the fix for a small bathroom, even though both end up at three or four reeds.
Morning Freshness₹749 · 9.0/10A guest bathroom, a box room, a walk-in wardrobe, a study that stays shut with the AC running. The volume of air is small and it is barely replaced, so the same release rate that reads as pleasant in a living room accumulates into something heavy by evening. This is the household most likely to have concluded that reed diffusers are overpowering, when what they have is six reeds in a room built for three. Take three reeds out on day one rather than waiting to see. Bathrooms are the classic case: Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the right character for one — Malabar lemon, peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus read as clean rather than as perfume — but at three reeds, not six, unless the room has a window that is genuinely open.Part two — the mild settings table
Below is how I would set up each of the common quiet-house situations, with the composition I would pair with it and the thing to check after the first week. The strength numbers in the third column are positions on SOSA's own internal scale measured at six reeds in an ordinary Indian room — not an industry standard, not a concentration, and not a ranking of quality. Read them as a rough loudness order and nothing more.
| Situation | Reeds | Composition to pair | What the room should read like | Check after one week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nursery or small child's room ★ | 3 | Evening Calm · 8.9 · ₹799 | Barely there — soft at the doorway, absent at the cot | That the bottle is out of reach and standing on a tray |
| A fragrance-sensitive adult in the house | 3, placed outside the room they use most | Evening Calm · 8.9 · ₹799 | Noticeable in the hallway, not in their chair | Whether they mention it at all — ask directly |
| Small sealed guest bathroom | 3 | Morning Freshness · 9.0 · ₹749 | Clean and cold rather than perfumed | Whether it has gone heavy by evening with the door shut |
| Shared bedroom where one of you dislikes scent | 4 | Evening Calm · 8.9 · ₹799 | Present at the door, quiet at the pillow | That it is at least a few feet from the bedhead |
| Entryway you want noticed once | 4 | Garden Bloom · 8.9 · ₹799 | A three-second greeting, then nothing | Ask a visitor — your own nose has adapted |
| Reading corner or home yoga space | 4 | Mountain Breeze · 9.4 · ₹849 | Dry, woody and grounding rather than sweet | Whether four reeds of a 9.4 is still more than you wanted |
| The honest caveat: a low reed count reduces how much fragrance reaches the room; it does not make a fragrance hypoallergenic, and it cannot make a composition suitable for someone who reacts to fragrance in general. Our reed compositions are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC and IFRA-compliant, which removes the harshest part of the equation — but if a person in your home reacts at three reeds in another room, the right answer is an unscented house, and I would rather say that than sell you a different bottle. Keep all diffusers away from children and pets, and out of direct sunlight. | ||||

Part three — how to go mild without going stale
There is one real risk in running a low count, and it is worth stating plainly before you commit to three reeds. A bottle at three reeds releases slowly, which means the oil sits in the glass for a long time — a 50ml at that setting will comfortably outlast its stated six to eight weeks, and a 130ml at ₹1,299 could run most of a year. That is usually a good thing. It becomes a bad thing if the room is hot, if the bottle sits in light, or if you leave the same three reeds in for months, because a reed's exposed end slowly accumulates the heavier part of the composition while the lighter molecules leave. What you are left with is not a mild version of the fragrance you bought; it is the base of it, which reads flat and slightly dull. Mild should be the whole composition played softly, not the bottom third played alone.
The protection is straightforward. Flip all three or four reeds weekly, with gloves, exactly as you would at six — a low count does not exempt you from the cadence, it just makes each flip less dramatic. Stand the bottle on a tray, out of direct sunlight, because reed oil marks wood and stone and heat is the single biggest accelerant of the aging I have just described. And refresh the reeds every few months even though they still look usable, particularly after a monsoon. Reeds are the consumable and the oil is the stable part, which is the opposite of what most people assume; at a low count the imbalance is more pronounced, because the same reeds are in service for far longer against the same volume of oil. I will note the honest gap here as I do everywhere: we do not sell replacement reeds as a separate item. It is the most requested thing we do not make, and until we do, the practical workaround is to keep the spares from a bottle you have finished.
Two further things worth knowing when you go under six. First, at three reeds the wet line — the boundary on a lifted reed between the oil-soaked part and the dry part — will typically sit lower and climb more slowly than it does at six, and that is normal rather than a sign of under-wicking. What is not normal is a wet line that has barely risen above the oil after several days; that is a reed that has stopped working and wants replacing, and at a low count you feel it immediately because there is no spare capacity in the system. Second, do not try to hit mild by any means other than count, distance and composition. Exposed reed length is a separate lever with its own trade-offs and belongs in the guide on surface area; diluting the oil or half-filling the bottle are not levers at all. Removing a reed is instant, free and completely reversible; nothing else on that list is.
Part four — what to buy for a quiet house
If you have decided that mild is the brief, here is what I would actually put in the basket, with the reed count I would start it at and the running cost over a year. Note that a 130ml appears here for duration, not for strength — at the same reed count it projects about the same as a 50ml and simply lasts longer, which is exactly what a low-count household wants.
| Buy | Start it at | Why this one | How long it runs | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Evening Calm 50ml ★ | 3 reeds | The softest composition we make, built for sleep rather than for show | 6–8 weeks at six reeds; comfortably longer at three | ₹799 |
| Garden Bloom 50ml | 4 reeds | Soft but sociable — the entryway greeting that does not follow you in | 6–8 weeks at six reeds; longer at four | ₹799 |
| Morning Freshness 50ml | 3 reeds | Reads as clean rather than perfumed — the small-bathroom answer | 6–8 weeks at six reeds; longer at three | ₹749 |
| Evening Calm 130ml | 3–4 reeds | Duration, not volume — a low-count bedroom you forget to think about | 14–18 weeks at six reeds; well beyond that at three | ₹1,299 |
| Day & Night duo | 3 in the bedroom, 4 in the bathroom | Two quiet rooms from one purchase, each set to its own level | Two 50ml bottles | ₹1,498 |
| 300ml oil refill | Same count as before | Oil only — you reuse your vessel; refresh the reeds when you refill | Roughly 8–11 months | ₹2,399 |
| Not the answer here: a stronger composition run at two reeds | — | Fresh Brew at 9.5 stays a coffee-and-vanilla room even when quiet | Character does not thin with count | Buy soft instead |
Versailles
The first time somebody wrote to me asking how to make a SOSA diffuser weaker, I remember feeling a small flush of embarrassment, as though the product had failed. It had not. She had a two-year-old, a room barely wider than the cot, and six reeds of a fragrance dosed for an ordinary bedroom. The instruction that solved it was to take three reeds out and stand them in a glass on the tray, which cost her nothing and took ten seconds.
I think about that exchange whenever I write a label. Six reeds is in the box because six is the count the composition is balanced around — it is a recommendation, in the way a recipe assumes a particular pan. It is not a rule, and it is certainly not a minimum. The people who get the most out of this format are usually the ones who treat the reeds as a dial rather than as packaging.
What I will not do is pretend that a low count makes fragrance safe for everybody. If someone in your home reacts to scent, three reeds in another room is worth trying once, honestly and with their consent, and then you should believe them either way. We make our compositions alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free and low-VOC because I would rather remove the harsh part of the equation than argue about it — but a quiet house is a perfectly good house. Everything is composed and handmade in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
