Why the floor-area sum gives the wrong number in a home this size

The 150 sq ft coverage figure is a steady-state number for one closed room with still air and a standard ceiling. It describes an equilibrium: the bottle evaporates fragrance at a slow, constant rate, the room's air holds it, and after some hours the concentration settles at a level you can detect. What that number never describes is a fraction of a larger home. Homes are partitioned. A 1,500 sq ft flat is not one pocket of 1,500 sq ft; it is a living-dining pocket, a kitchen pocket, three bedroom pockets, two or three bathroom pockets and a corridor, separated by walls and by doors that are shut for most of the day. Adding the areas together and dividing by 150 quietly assumes the fragrance can move between them, and it cannot.

There is not, and there does not need to be. You do not have 1,500 sq ft of air to fill; you have five rooms you actually live in and four you walk past.
