Founder Diaries · Fragrance Projection · Establishment
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Almost everyone treats this as a shopping question when it is a clock question. A fragrance is present at the moment a door opens only if it was already established in the room before that moment — and "established" is a physical state, not a switch position. A source does not fill a room instantly; it emits into the air around it and the room climbs towards a working level, while air exchange and soft furnishing take their share back. Turning something on as the bell rings gets you a device that is running and a room that is not ready. This page explains what established means, how each format reaches it, and what quietly undoes it. I have no way of promising you anyone's reaction, and I would be suspicious of a brand that did. What I can describe precisely is the state of the room.
Quick answers — read this first
Established means the room has reached a working level, not that the device is switched on. Emission has to have been going in for long enough to outpace what the room takes back out.

A reed diffuser is the only format that is established by default — it has been running for weeks by the time you need it. Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749, six reeds, no socket, nothing to remember.

A machine needs a head start. Put a Sukoon ₹1,899 on the 2H or 4H timer well before people are due, so the fragrance is settled and even rather than arriving in a visible plume.

New bottles behave in three phases: a days-1–3 spike as dry reeds saturate and top notes leave, a settle over the following weeks, then a long plateau. The plateau is the product — do not judge the bottle in its first week.
The short answer
Short answer: keep a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 running permanently in the room people come into, so something is always established without any effort from you. If you want the level lifted on particular evenings, add a Sukoon at ₹1,899 and start it well in advance on the 2H timer. Do not light a candle at the last minute and expect it to have done anything by the time the door opens; it is an evening companion, not an arrival.
The mechanism: think of the room as a bath with the plug partly out. Emission is the tap; air exchange and absorption are the drain. The level rises until the two balance, and that balance point is what anyone entering perceives. Raising the tap helps a little; closing the drain — shutting the balcony door an hour earlier — often helps more, and costs nothing.
Straight answer
How do I make sure a fragrance is actually present when someone walks in?
1. Understand what you are aiming at. A room is established when the fragrance going into it has outpaced what the room removes, and the level has stopped climbing. That is the level a person entering meets. Until then the device is working and the room is not yet ready.

2. A reed diffuser is established because it never stops. This is its real advantage and it is rarely sold as one. There is nothing to switch on, nothing to remember on the day, and no head start to plan. A 50ml at ₹749 runs 6–8 weeks; a 130ml at ₹1,249 runs 14–18. The larger bottle is not stronger — it is the same emission for longer.

3. A new bottle takes a fortnight to show you its real level. Days one to three are a spike: dry reeds are saturating and the volatile top notes are leaving all at once. Over the next week or two it settles. Then it plateaus and holds until the bottle is nearly done. Judge it on the plateau, never on day two.

4. A machine has to be given a head start. Started as guests arrive, a Sukoon produces a visible plume near the vent and a room that has not caught up. Use the 2H or 4H timer so it begins well before anyone is due and the fragrance is even by the time it matters. The Boond at ₹899 does the same for a room of about 150 sq ft.

5. Things that un-establish a room, in order of severity. Cross-ventilation — two openings on opposite walls — beats every product we sell. A fan or AC blowing across the source strips it and carries the output away. A door opening repeatedly exchanges a threshold's air wholesale. Cooking adds a competing smell that fragrance sits alongside rather than removes.

6. Ventilate early, not late. The room needs airing before the fragrance is established, not during. Extractor on, windows open for a proper spell, then close up and let the level build. Reversing that order wastes both.

7. A candle establishes almost nothing before an evening. Warm wax releases fragrance only while lit, in the room it stands in, with a weak convection column above the melt pool. Lit at the last minute it is decoration. As a second source over a reed baseline during the evening, it earns its place. Jar candles start at ₹379.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: established is a state of the room, not a setting on a device. A reed diffuser is established by default because it is never off — 50ml from ₹749. A machine needs a head start, which is what the Sukoon's ₹1,899 timers are for. Ventilate before, not during. And judge a new bottle on its plateau, not its first three days.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser 50ml with six fibre reeds
The format that is already established when you need it
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint & Nilgiri eucalyptus ₹749 / 50ml
The least polarising composition in the range, and the one I hand to people who have never owned a reed diffuser. Its argument here is dull and decisive: it has been running for weeks before the evening you care about, so there is nothing to remember and no head start to plan. Six fibre reeds rather than rattan, whose pores clog in Indian humidity; alcohol-free, phthalate-free and paraben-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier, at 9.0 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds. 6–8 weeks on 50ml; 130ml ₹1,249 for 14–18. Flip weekly with gloves; stand it on a tray.

Part one — what "established" actually means

Three ideas, after which the timing decisions make themselves. None is about which fragrance you chose.

1
THE BALANCE POINT · A BATH WITH THE PLUG PARTLY OUT
The room climbs to a level where emission and loss cancel, and that level is what anyone entering meets
Fragrance goes into a room at a rate set by the source and leaves at a rate set by the room — air exchange through doors, windows and vents, plus absorption into curtains, upholstery and rugs. The level rises until those two rates match, then stops rising. That equilibrium is the real product, and it explains two puzzles. Why a source cannot be left running longer to get stronger: past the balance point, more hours add nothing. And why the same bottle behaves differently in two flats — the drain differs, not the tap. It also tells you which lever to pull. Raising emission lifts the balance point a little; closing a window lowers the drain, which often lifts it more and costs nothing.
The free lever: close one of two opposing openings an hour before. You are not adding fragrance; you are keeping the fragrance you already made.
2
THE CURVE · WHY A NEW BOTTLE MISLEADS YOU
Days 1–3 spike, a settle over the following weeks, then a plateau that holds
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser, Kashmir lavender and chamomileEvening Calm₹799 · 50mlUnbox a reed diffuser and the first days are the loudest it will ever be: dry reeds drinking oil along their whole length, and the most volatile parts of the composition leaving fastest. Then it settles, and by the second or third week it reaches a plateau that holds almost to the end of the bottle. That plateau is what the fragrance was designed to be. Two mistakes follow from not knowing it. People judge a bottle in week one and feel let down in week three by an entirely normal settle. Or they buy a second bottle to chase the opening. If you want a room ready for something a fortnight away, put the bottle out now — do not open it the night before and take the spike for the product.
The trade, stated: SOSA is phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT base. Phthalate solvents push harder off a reed in week one and degrade in heat; we take a smaller opening and a longer, flatter plateau.
3
WHAT UN-ESTABLISHES A ROOM
A room empties much faster than any passive source can fill it
This is the asymmetry that ruins evenings. Building a level takes a source hours or days; removing it takes a cross-draught a fraction of that. Two openings on opposite walls strip a room of scent faster than anything we sell can replace it. An AC or fan across the source is worse, because it also strips the reeds — the bottle empties weeks early while the room stays quiet. A front door opening exchanges a hallway's air wholesale, which is why a passive source in an entrance spends its life refilling a space that keeps emptying. And cooking does not remove fragrance; it adds to it, which is not the same thing. Extract and ventilate first, close up, then let the room re-establish.

Part two — six rooms, and whether each is established

Six situations I meet constantly. The starred one never has to think about any of this.

Established or not · a diagnostic
The situation · is the room ready · why · what to do instead
The situation at the moment the door opens Established? Why What to do instead
A reed diffuser that has been in the room for weeks ★ Yes, by default It has never been off; the room sits at its plateau Nothing. This is the point of the format
A reed diffuser unboxed this afternoon Partly, and misleadingly You are in the days-1–3 spike, not at the settled level Enjoy it, but do not judge the bottle by it
A machine started well before anyone is due Yes The room has had time to climb to a working level Use the 2H or 4H timer so you cannot forget
A machine switched on as the bell rings No A visible plume at the vent and a room that has not caught up Start it earlier. Same product, different outcome
A candle lit a few minutes before No A weak convection column, one room, only while lit Keep it as a second source for the evening itself
A room aired with two windows open until just now No, whatever you own Cross-ventilation removes scent faster than a source adds it Air early, close up, then let the room re-establish
The honest caveat: establishment is about the state of the room and nothing else. It does not tell you what anyone will perceive, still less what they will say — thresholds and attention differ between people and I will not pretend to model them. What is worth noticing is that four of the six rows above are fixed by changing when you did something, not by buying anything.

Always-on, and on-demand
The SOSA principle
Timing is free, and almost nobody uses it. The same product, started earlier, is a different product at the moment someone walks in.
Which is why a reed diffuser's dullest quality — that it cannot be switched on, so it is never off — is the one that matters most here.

Part three — when the answer is not a stronger product

The commonest version of this question arrives with a shopping basket already open, and in most cases I would empty it. If a room was never established, a stronger source will not rescue the arrival; it reaches the same unfinished state a little faster. The lever that moves is the clock, and the clock is free. Put the source in place earlier. Air the flat earlier. Close the balcony door earlier. Start the machine earlier. I have watched people spend thousands on a problem that was one decision about when.

There is a second free lever people miss, and it is the drain rather than the tap. Closing one of two opposing openings an hour before does more for the level in most flats than adding reeds does, because it changes the rate at which the room loses what it has. Shut the doors of rooms you are not scenting for the same reason — a passive source asked to cover a whole flat is filling a bath with three plugs out. And air before, never during: extractor on, windows open for a proper spell, close up, then let the fragrance build. It costs nothing and I have never met a flat where it did not help.

Money earns its place in one place here: control. A reed diffuser cannot be turned on, which is why it is always established — and why it cannot give you a level for four hours and then nothing. If you want the room lifted for an evening and back to normal after, you are buying a switch and a timer. For a living room of roughly 250–320 sq ft that is the Sukoon at ₹1,899, with 16–18 hours on low, a remote, steady/2H/4H timers and three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box. For a study, a nursery or a room of about 150 sq ft it is the Boond at ₹899. Both are ultrasonic and add a little moisture, because misting water is how they carry fragrance. Neither takes reed oil. And the Megh at ₹3,499 is not the upgrade its size suggests: about 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon, bought for roughly 100 hours of runtime and never for coverage.

Asking a passive source to fill a room the moment a door opens is asking a passive format to do an active job. Asking any source to do it with no head start is asking physics to hurry.

Honest notes for buyers: a diffuser or a candle adds fragrance alongside what is already in a room; it does not clean, purify or filter air, remove cooking, smoke or damp smells, or reduce humidity. Ventilate or extract first, then add fragrance. Longevity figures are typical ranges, not guarantees, and vary with warmth, airflow and how often a room is opened; the three-phase curve described here is what we observe across our own range and is not a measured guarantee. SOSA has no 100ml reed diffuser; sizes are 50ml and 130ml, and replacement reeds are not sold separately, so a refill is oil only — refresh reeds every few months. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Megh 6L ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon, and is a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade. Never leave a lit candle unattended; keep oil and candles away from children, pets, open flame and direct sunlight. Free shipping above ₹499; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo, Morning Freshness and Evening Calm
Two rooms at their plateau, with a clean seam between them
SOSA Day & Night duo · Morning Freshness + Evening Calm ₹1,498 / 2 × 50ml
The reason to buy two bottles rather than one larger one is that output per bottle is fixed — the only way to raise the total in a home is another source. Two 50ml bottles establish two rooms; one 130ml establishes one room for longer. This pair is the easiest to run either side of a doorway because both sit at the light, clean end of the range, so the transition between them does not read as a seam. 6–8 weeks each at six reeds; 2 × 130ml is ₹2,498 for 14–18 weeks. Flip weekly; trays under both.

A note from Sonal

The three-phase curve is the thing I most wish were printed on every box in this category. A reed diffuser is at its loudest in the first days and at its truest in week three, and almost every judgement people make about a bottle is made in the wrong window. We now say it on the product page, because a customer who expects the settle is not disappointed by it.

It is also the reason we stayed phthalate-free. Phthalate solvents push fragrance hard off a reed and win week one convincingly, then degrade through a 45°C summer and turn sharp by week six. Our CCT base opens smaller and holds flatter for longer. That is a trade, and I would rather state it than let you discover half of it.

What I did not expect, when we started writing about establishment, was how many problems resolved to a clock rather than a product. Start the machine earlier. Put the bottle out a fortnight before, not the night before. Close the window an hour ahead. None of it makes us any money, and all of it works. Made in small batches in Pune; a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I start a diffuser before people arrive?
Well before they are due rather than as they arrive — the aim is a settled, even level rather than a plume near the vent. The Sukoon's steady, 2H and 4H timers exist for exactly this, so the decision is made once instead of remembered on the day. A reed diffuser needs no advance planning at all, which is its quiet advantage on this question.
My new reed diffuser was strong for three days and is quieter now. Is something wrong?
No — that is the normal curve. Dry reeds saturate and the most volatile top notes leave in the first days, so the opening is the loudest the bottle will ever be. It settles over the following couple of weeks and then plateaus, and the plateau is the level the composition was designed around. Flip all six reeds weekly with gloves and judge it in week three.
Should I air the flat before guests arrive or leave the windows shut?
Air it early, then close up and let the fragrance re-establish. Cross-ventilation removes scent faster than any source we sell adds it, so airing while you want a level in place works against you. If two openings on opposite walls are in use, closing one an hour before is the single most effective free change available to most flats.
Will a 130ml establish a room faster than a 50ml?
No. At the same six reeds they emit at the same rate, so they reach the same level at the same pace; the 130ml simply keeps doing it for 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8. If you want a higher level, the honest lever is reed count — nine reeds on a 50ml gives roughly five weeks instead of eight — or a second source in the same space.
Is a candle enough on its own for an evening?
As the only source, no. It releases fragrance while lit, in the room it stands in, on a weak upward convection above the melt pool, and it stops when you put it out — so it contributes almost nothing to the state of the room before the evening begins. Used as a second, warmer source over a reed baseline it works well. Jar candles start at ₹379; never leave one unattended.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on what it means for a home fragrance to be established in a room before it is needed. Nothing here predicts, promises or quantifies anyone's response to a fragrance. The three-phase curve and all longevity figures are typical patterns observed across SOSA's own range, not measurements or guarantees. No competing product or brand is named, priced or rated, and no city temperature, humidity or air-quality figure is quoted — the only test conditions stated are SOSA's own, 45°C and 85% relative humidity.

A reed diffuser or a diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, smoke or damp smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels — and nothing here can promise that any guest will notice, comment on or remember a fragrance. Ventilate or extract first; add fragrance second. A persistent musty smell indicates moisture that needs finding and drying, and SOSA sells no dehumidifier or air purifier. How far a fragrance carries depends on emission rate, air movement, room volume, ceiling height, air exchange and soft furnishing; longevity and coverage figures are typical ranges and manufacturer specifications, not guarantees. Not noticing a constant fragrance is ordinary olfactory adaptation — the reliable checks are leaving the room and returning, or asking someone who has just arrived. Strength figures are positions on SOSA’s own internal scale, not an industry standard.
