What is capillary action in a reed diffuser? It is the reason oil defies gravity and travels up a stick with nothing pushing it. A natural or synthetic reed is not solid; it is full of very narrow channels running along its length. Liquid in a narrow channel is attracted to the channel walls more strongly than it is held together by its own surface, so it creeps upward, and the narrower the channel the higher it climbs. That is capillary action, and it is what keeps the top of your reeds continuously supplied with fresh oil as the surface evaporates away. It is also why reeds eventually slow down: the heavier, stickier fragrance materials gradually deposit inside those channels and narrow them, wicking drops off, and after about six to ten weeks a fresh set of reeds usually restores the performance.
Why does that mechanism mean it will not fill a room? Because at no point does the mechanism add energy. Capillary action moves oil a few centimetres up a stick. Evaporation converts a small amount of it to vapour at the pace the room permits. What is actually happening inside a reed diffuser, stage by stage?
Three stages, and only two of them belong to the diffuser. 1. The climb - capillary action. A reed is not a solid stick. It is threaded with very narrow channels, and liquid inside a narrow channel is pulled toward the channel walls more strongly than it holds on to itself, so it creeps upward against gravity. That is capillary action, the same effect that lifts tea up a sugar cube or water up a paper towel. It runs continuously and costs nothing, keeping the exposed top of each reed supplied with fresh oil. 2. The release - evaporation. Above the bottle neck the oil meets air and evaporates from the exposed reed surface. How fast is not the diffuser's choice at all: warmth speeds it up, cool slows it, moving air carries vapour away and pulls more off the surface, still air lets it sit. The climb: how oil travels upward with nothing pushing it
Cut a reed lengthways and you would find it is not solid at all but riddled with very fine channels running from end to end, whether it is a natural rattan stick or a synthetic fibre one. Put the bottom of that stick into fragrance oil and the oil begins to move upward on its own. It happens because a liquid inside a narrow channel is attracted to the channel walls more strongly than its own surface tension holds it together, so it climbs, and the narrower the channel the further it will go. This is capillary action, and you have seen it a hundred times: tea creeping up a sugar cube, water climbing a paper towel, oil feeding a lamp wick. In a diffuser it runs quietly and permanently, with no power and no moving parts, keeping the exposed top of every reed continuously supplied as the surface evaporates away. It is also the stage that ages. Fragrance oils contain heavier, stickier materials that gradually deposit inside those channels and narrow them, so wicking slows over time. That is the real reason a diffuser fades after about six to ten weeks, and it is why a fresh set of reeds in the same oil so often brings a good deal of it back.

Stage two
The release: evaporation, and why the room sets the pace
Where the reed emerges from the bottle neck, oil meets open air and begins to evaporate. This is the only point at which fragrance actually enters your room, and the diffuser has almost no say in how fast it happens. Three things set the rate, and all three belong to the room rather than the bottle. Temperature comes first: warmth gives molecules more energy to leave the surface, which is why a diffuser reads stronger on a hot afternoon than on a cool morning and why the same bottle performs differently in April and in December. Air movement comes second: moving air carries vapour away from the reed surface, and a surface that has just been cleared evaporates faster, which is the quiet paradox of a ceiling fan - it increases the total evaporation while thinning the scent so much that you notice it less. Exposed surface area comes third, and this is the only one you control: more reeds, thicker reeds or a longer exposed length all mean more evaporating surface, a stronger pocket of scent at the bottle, and a bottle that empties sooner. The drift: the concentration gradient, and why energy is the missing ingredient
The third stage is the one people assume the diffuser is doing, and it is the one it is not doing at all. Once fragrance molecules are airborne there are simply more of them in the air beside the reeds than in the air a metre away, and molecules move from crowded space toward empty space until the crowding evens out. That outward wandering is the entire distribution system of a reed diffuser. It is slow, it has no direction, and it is easily beaten. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.

Frequently asked questions
Do thicker or longer reeds change how the mechanism behaves?
They change the second stage only, and in a predictable direction. A thicker reed generally carries more oil upward and offers more surface to evaporate from; a longer exposed length above the bottle neck does the same. Both raise the amount of fragrance entering the air per hour, so the pocket of scent around the bottle becomes stronger and the reservoir drains faster. Neither adds a delivery mechanism, so the far side of the room is unaffected. There is also a practical limit: pack a bottle with reeds and you can end up with an intense hot spot that some people find heavy at close range, a bottle that runs through its oil noticeably sooner, and no gain at all in the place you were hoping to notice it. Use the number that smells right at the distance you sit, and change the tool rather than the stick count if you want reach.
Does the type of oil change how well capillary action works?
Yes, and it is one of the genuine differences between a well-made diffuser oil and a random fragrance. Thin, mobile oils climb the reed channels easily and evaporate readily; heavy, viscous or resin-rich compositions climb more slowly and clog the channels sooner. This is why a diffuser base is formulated for wicking rather than simply being perfume decanted into a bottle, and why topping up a diffuser with the wrong liquid often kills it. It is also why the very rich, sweet, resinous fragrance families tend to be the shortest-lived on reeds while lighter citrus and tea compositions wick cleanly. What none of it affects is stage three. A better-wicking oil gives you more fragrance in the air near the bottle for longer; it still has nothing carrying it across the room.
Does temperature really make that much difference to evaporation?
It makes a very noticeable one, and most people have already observed it without naming it. Warmth gives molecules at the reed surface more energy to escape into the air, so the same bottle releases more fragrance per hour in a warm room than a cool one. That is why a diffuser can feel almost too present in a shut, sun-warmed room in May and unusually quiet in an air-conditioned room in the same house, and why a bathroom just after a hot shower is such an easy win. There is a trade: a diffuser run permanently in a hot room will get through its oil faster, so the six to ten week expectation lands at the shorter end. Never place a diffuser in direct sunlight or on top of a warm appliance, though, since heat also degrades the fragrance itself over time.
If nothing pushes the scent, why can I smell it the moment I walk into the room?
Two reasons, and both are real. The first is that you have moved through the air rather than the air moving to you. Walking creates turbulence and drags a wake of air along with you, so you sample a much larger slice of the room in a few seconds than you would sitting still, including the denser air nearer the bottle. The second is your own nose. Olfactory receptors adapt quickly to a constant background scent, so after fifteen or twenty minutes in a room you largely stop registering it, then re-register it on returning from outside. That is why guests so often compliment a home scent the owner cannot smell at all. Neither effect means the fragrance travelled. It means you did, with a freshly reset nose.
Does an active diffuser use the same fragrance as my reeds?
No, and this is the one thing worth getting right before you buy. Reed diffuser oil is formulated to wick up a stick and evaporate slowly, so it stays in its own bottle with its own reeds.
