Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers by Home Type
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
A reed diffuser has no fan, no mist and no way of reaching a room it is not in. Below three bedrooms that is a footnote — three bottles and you are done. Past a 4BHK it becomes the entire design brief, because three things become true at once that were false in anything smaller: the public zone can outgrow a single bottle and become two zones, the number of bedrooms regularly exceeds the number of people actually sleeping in the house, and there are enough doorways between rooms that which scent sits next to which stops being luck and starts being a decision. This is the complete answer — how many bottles, which rooms, one public zone or two, which sizes, which scents, how many reeds, where each bottle stands, whether a machine belongs in the mix, what it costs, how to refill it, and where the ceiling sits.
Quick answers — read this first
The setup: a Garden Bloom 130ml in the public zone at ₹1,299, an Evening Calm 50ml in the master at ₹799, a Mountain Breeze 50ml in bedroom two at ₹849, a Garden Bloom 50ml in bedroom three at ₹799, and a Morning Freshness 50ml in each of two bathrooms at ₹749 apiece. ₹5,244 for the standard six-bottle kit.

Scaling it: five bottles at ₹4,495 if only one bathroom is fitted out yet; seven at ₹6,093 once all four bedrooms are slept in; eight at ₹7,342, the ceiling, once the kitchen is closed too.

Two zones instead of one? A living half and a dining half, same scent, one 130ml and one 50ml, comes to ₹2,098 for the public zone alone.
The short answer
Short answer: six bottles for a standard 4BHK — a public-zone 130ml, three bedroom 50mls and two bathroom 50mls — at ₹5,244. The exact count moves between five and eight depending on how many bathrooms are fitted, how many bedrooms are actually slept in, and whether the kitchen is closed.
The pick: Garden Bloom 130ml ₹1,299 for the public zone, Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 for the master, Mountain Breeze 50ml ₹849 and Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 for the two remaining slept-in bedrooms, Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 for each bathroom.
Do not buy: one 130ml for a public zone that is actually two zones seventy feet apart, or a bottle for every bedroom regardless of whether anyone sleeps there. A reed diffuser scents a table, not a floor plan — a room nobody enters gets a stale bottle, which is worse than an empty shelf.
Straight answer
What is the complete reed diffuser plan for a large home?
1. Six bottles is the standard, at ₹5,244. A Garden Bloom 130ml in the public zone, Evening Calm 50ml in the master, Mountain Breeze 50ml and Garden Bloom 50ml in the other two slept-in bedrooms, Morning Freshness 50ml in each of two bathrooms. Full detail on the count is here.

2. The public zone is one bottle or two, and the test is a straight line of sight. If you can see the dining table from the sofa without turning a corner, one 130ml, stood near the entrance, does the job. If living and dining are separated by an L-turn or more than roughly 25 feet, it is two zones and two bottles — a 130ml plus a 50ml, same scent, ₹2,098 for the pair.

3. A bedroom earns a bottle only if someone sleeps in it. A 4BHK routinely has four bedrooms and three sleepers. The fourth — home office, storage, occasional guest — does not get a bottle by default; it gets one when it starts being used, not before. Same for a stairwell, landing, corridor or balcony: none of them hold a fragrance long enough to be worth the ₹749.

4. Sizes and reeds follow the same 150 sq ft line as any smaller flat, applied to more rooms. 130ml above 150 sq ft, 50ml below it; six reeds where people pass through, three where people sleep, two to three in a bathroom. Nothing about a large home changes the physics — it just multiplies the rooms the physics applies to.

5. Eight bottles is the ceiling, at ₹7,342. That is every bedroom slept in plus a closed kitchen. Past eight, a home stops smelling of a fragrance and starts smelling of fragrance — the long version of why is here.

Alcohol-free, IFRA-compliant, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and handmade in small batches in Pune — and every purchase funds a girl's education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: a standard 4BHK takes six reed diffusers — a 130ml in the public zone at ₹1,299 and five 50mls across three slept-in bedrooms and two bathrooms — ₹5,244 in total. A genuinely split public zone adds a second bottle for ₹2,098 alone. The ceiling, with every bedroom slept in and the kitchen closed, is eight bottles at ₹7,342. Nothing goes in the stairwell, landing, corridor or balcony.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, British rose and night-blooming jasmine
The public-zone bottle
SOSA Garden Bloom · 130ml ₹1,299
British rose over night-blooming jasmine — the register that reads as a cared-for home the moment the door opens, and the scent most large homes anchor the whole ground floor to. Runs 14–18 weeks on all six reeds. If the public zone is genuinely two spaces, add a second bottle in 50ml at ₹799 for the far end rather than moving this one back and forth. Refillable glass, alcohol-free CCT base. Refills from ₹2,399.

What actually changes past a 4BHK

The first change is the public zone itself. Below a 3BHK, living and dining are almost always one continuous space you can see across in a glance, and one bottle standing on the entrance side covers it. A 4BHK public zone is frequently an L-shape, or a living room with a separate dining alcove, or two rooms joined by an archway — spaces where the far end is genuinely out of a single bottle's reach. That is not a bigger version of the same problem; it is a different problem, and the fix is a second bottle at the far end rather than a bigger bottle in the middle. Placement across a large home gets the full treatment here.

The second change is the gap between bedroom count and sleeper count. A 1BHK has one bedroom and it is occupied. A 4BHK has four bedrooms and, in most households, three people using them — a home office, a storage room, a room kept for parents who visit twice a year. Buying a bottle for every bedroom because the flat has four of them is buying for the floor plan instead of the household. The rule stays the one from the doctrine: buy per place you stop moving, and a room nobody stops in yet does not qualify, whatever the builder called it on the brochure.

The third change is doorway density. A 1BHK has perhaps two internal doors; a 4BHK routinely has six or seven, plus a corridor connecting several of them. That many doorways means a scent that drifts under one door can meet a different scent drifting under the next, in a way that never happens in a smaller flat. Below 4BHK this can be left to chance because there are only two or three scents in the whole home to begin with. Past 4BHK, with five or six bottles running, adjacency has to be planned — which is exactly what the fragrance-combination decision below is for.

The three decisions in a large home

1
DECISION ONE · ONE PUBLIC ZONE OR TWO
A straight sightline is one bottle; an L-turn is two
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser 130mlGarden Bloom 130ml₹1,299Stand at the sofa and look toward the dining table. If nothing blocks the view and the distance feels like one room, a single 130ml near the entrance covers it — the same answer as a 3BHK. If there is a turn, an archway with a step, or the dining end is genuinely a separate room off a passage, treat it as two zones with the same scent: a 130ml where guests arrive and a 50ml at the far end. That is ₹2,098 for the whole public zone rather than one bottle quietly failing to reach half of it.
The test: if you would call it "the other end of the room" rather than "across the room," it is a second bottle, not a bigger one.
2
DECISION TWO · WHICH ROOMS EARN A BOTTLE
Slept-in bedrooms and used bathrooms — nothing else by default
Every bedroom that someone actually sleeps in gets a 50ml on three reeds; every fitted bathroom gets a 50ml on two to three. A closed kitchen, if you have one, can take a 130ml in citrus because it is the one family that holds up against food. Everything else in a large home — the stairwell, the landing outside the bedrooms, the corridor connecting them, the balcony — gets nothing, because none of them are places you stop, and open or transit air does not hold a fragrance long enough to justify the bottle. A home office or a spare room used daily is a bedroom in every sense that matters here and earns its own bottle; a spare room opened twice a year does not, until it starts being used.
The rule: a door you shut regularly earns a bottle. A door you shut once a month does not — yet.
3
DECISION THREE · SIZES, REEDS AND SCENTS ACROSS SIX ROOMS
The same 150 sq ft rule, now with adjacency to manage
Sizing does not change with scale — 130ml above 150 sq ft, 50ml below it; six reeds where people pass through, three where they sleep, two to three in a bathroom. What changes is that six bottles running at once means the scent list has to be planned as a set, not chosen bottle by bottle. The structure that holds up across five and six doorways: one anchor scent for the public zone that carries some weight (Garden Bloom or Mountain Breeze), one quiet scent repeated or paired across the bedrooms so an open door between two of them never clashes, and citrus kept strictly to the bathrooms and kitchen. The full combination guide is here.

The full specification for a large home

The table below is the standard six-bottle 4BHK laid out room by room, with the extensions to five, seven and eight bottles marked, and the rooms that get nothing at all included on purpose — a specification is not complete until it says what to skip. Longevity assumes the reed counts shown and a flip every three to five days.

Bedroom two ★ Mountain Breeze 50ml — dresser, clear of the AC vent Three · 8–10 weeks ₹849
Bedroom three ★ Garden Bloom 50ml — dresser, away from direct sun Three · 8–10 weeks ₹799
Bathrooms, both ★ Morning Freshness 50ml ×2 — counter beside the basin in each Two to three each · up to 12 weeks ₹1,498
Bedroom four, once slept in (→ 7 bottles) Optional Fresh Brew 50ml — only when the room is in regular use Three · 8–10 weeks +₹849 or ₹0
Closed kitchen, the ceiling (→ 8 bottles) Optional Morning Freshness 130ml — citrus is the only family that holds against food All six · 14–18 weeks +₹1,249 or ₹0
Stairwell, landing, corridor, balcony Nothing. Open, transit or outdoor air; none of it holds a fragrance long enough to earn a bottle — ₹0
Note on the public zone: if yours is genuinely two spaces rather than one, replace the single ₹1,299 row above with a 130ml plus a 50ml, same scent — ₹2,098 for the zone. And if you want one room to change on demand for guests rather than run always-on, add a Sukoon at ₹1,899 to the standard six-bottle kit: ₹7,143 for the pair, reeds as the everyday baseline and the machine for evenings.

The large-home core — public zone, one bedroom register, the bathroom bottle
The SOSA principle
A large home is not a small home with more rooms. It is a home where the public zone can split, the bedrooms can outnumber the sleepers, and the doorways start to matter.
Plan for those three things and the bottle count writes itself — five to eight, never more.

Reeds, flipping and the four ways a large-home setup goes wrong

Start every bottle at the reed count you intend to keep. Six in the public zone, three per bedroom, two to three per bathroom, six in a closed kitchen — and give each room seventy-two hours before judging it, because the reeds are still saturating and the room has not reached a steady state on day one. With six bottles running, resist adjusting more than one room a week; changing everything at once makes it impossible to tell which change did what.

Four failures show up more often at this scale than in a smaller flat, and each has a specific fix. A draught from a ceiling fan or an AC vent strips the top notes off a bottle within days and leaves only the base behind, which reads as the scent "going off" when it has simply lost half of itself to moving air — move the bottle, not the reeds. Unflipped reeds are the quietest failure: skip the three-to-five-day flip on even one of six bottles and that single room goes faint while the rest of the house is fine, which is easy to miss when you are not paying equal attention to six rooms at once. Nose blindness is real and gets worse with more bottles running simultaneously — you stop noticing all six long before a visitor does, so judge strength on a guest's reaction after the second week, not your own. And the failure specific to a large home: the stale bottle in a room nobody enters. An unused guest room or a rarely-opened home office left running for months goes flat and slightly sour, and that smell is worse than no bottle at all because it reads as neglect rather than absence. The fix is the capped-bottle method — keep the bottle sealed with its stopper in when the room is not in use, open it two or three days before guests arrive so the reeds have time to saturate and project properly, then cap it again once they leave.

Placement across a large home follows the same physical rules as a small one, just applied more times. About a metre off the floor, clear air on both sides, out of a fan or AC draught, out of direct sun, away from the hob if the kitchen is open, and above the reach of children and pets in every room, not only the ones you visit most. The room-by-room placement notes are here if you want the surface, height and draught detail for each of the six rooms rather than the general rule.

A large home does not need more bottles than rooms you stop in. It needs a plan for the doorways between them.

What a large-home reed setup actually costs

The full arithmetic, every total checked by hand. Reed diffusers carry no electricity cost and no consumable beyond the oil, so across six bottles the running cost is still just refills — and because the glass is designed to be refilled rather than replaced, a large home's year two is considerably cheaper than its year one.

The large-home budget
Four routes from five bottles to the ceiling, plus running cost
Setup What you get Covers Total
Five bottles Garden Bloom 130ml ₹1,299 + Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 + Mountain Breeze 50ml ₹849 + Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 + Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 Public zone, three bedrooms, one bathroom ₹4,495

Seven bottles The six above + Fresh Brew 50ml ₹849 All four bedrooms slept in, two bathrooms ₹6,093
Eight bottles, the ceiling The seven above + Morning Freshness 130ml ₹1,249 Every room including a closed kitchen ₹7,342
Running cost A 500ml refill ₹3,499 (₹7/ml), or 300ml ₹2,399 500ml is ten 50ml fills — roughly ₹350 a fill, across any of the bottles above from ₹2,399
Honest notes before you buy: the duo sets — Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 — save exactly ₹50 against buying the same two bottles separately. Useful across a large home if two of your six rooms happen to match a pairing, but buy for the scents, not the fifty rupees. Reed oil is not interchangeable with the water-based Hotel Collection used in the ultrasonic Sukoon or Boond — never decant one into the other's vessel. A large home is exactly where the two lines work best together: reeds run always-on across six rooms, and one Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers the room that needs to change on demand for guests — the full comparison is here. Every bottle is oil in an open reservoir — keep it away from children, pets and any surface a spill would mark. Every purchase funds a girl's education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA reed diffuser refills
Once six bottles are running
Reed Diffuser Refills · 500ml ₹3,499
Refill at roughly 80% empty rather than waiting for the bottle to run dry, and change the reeds with every refill — darkened, saturated reeds stop wicking cleanly however much oil is left. One 500ml at ₹7/ml gives ten 50ml fills across any of the six bottles, working out to about ₹350 a fill against ₹749–₹849 for a new bottle each time. Also in 300ml at ₹2,399 for a smaller top-up.

A note from Sonal

Large-home orders used to worry me before I understood the pattern in them. Someone with a 4BHK would write in wanting to know the single biggest bottle we made, on the reasonable assumption that a bigger house needs a bigger diffuser. It doesn't. It needs the same small bottle, repeated correctly, at every place the household actually stops.

What changes past a 4BHK is not the physics of a reed — it is the geography around it. The public zone might be two rooms pretending to be one. A third of the bedrooms might be storage in disguise. And with six scents running instead of two or three, the doorways between them start to matter in a way they never did in a smaller flat. Get those three things right and the bottle count settles itself, almost always somewhere between five and eight, never past it.

If I had to leave a large-home reader with one instruction, it would be this: buy the public zone and the bathrooms first, because they are used by everyone including guests, and let the bedroom count grow only as the rooms themselves fill with people. Every purchase funds a girl's education through Nanhi Kali — not a percentage, not a quarterly cheque. Every one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best reed diffuser setup for a large home or 4BHK?
Six bottles for the standard case: a Garden Bloom 130ml at ₹1,299 for the public zone, an Evening Calm 50ml at ₹799 for the master, a Mountain Breeze 50ml at ₹849 and a Garden Bloom 50ml at ₹799 for the other two slept-in bedrooms, and a Morning Freshness 50ml at ₹749 in each of two bathrooms — ₹5,244 total. The room-by-room reasoning is here.
How many reed diffusers does a 4BHK actually need?
Between five and eight, depending on how many bathrooms are fitted, how many of the four bedrooms are slept in, and whether the kitchen is closed. Five bottles at ₹4,495 covers a public zone, three bedrooms and one bathroom; eight at ₹7,342 is the ceiling with every bedroom in use and a closed kitchen included. The full count breakdown is here.
Should the public zone in a large home have one bottle or two?
Test it by sightline. If you can see the whole zone in one glance from the sofa, one 130ml near the entrance covers it. If there is an L-turn, an archway, or the dining area reads as a separate space, use two bottles of the same scent — a 130ml and a 50ml — for ₹2,098 rather than expecting one bottle to reach both ends.
How many reed diffusers are too many for one home?
Eight is the ceiling for a large home, the same way four is the ceiling for a 1BHK and six for a 2BHK. Beyond that, a house stops smelling of a fragrance and starts smelling of fragrance — every doorway carries a slightly different note and the effect reads as air freshener rather than a considered home. The full case for the ceiling is here.
Reed diffuser or a Sukoon for a large home?
Both, run differently. Reeds are the always-on baseline across all six rooms — no power, no timer, a steady low level for months. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the machine you switch on for one room when it needs to change quickly, typically when guests are coming. Reed oil and the water-based Hotel Collection are different formulations and are never interchangeable between the two. The full comparison is here.
