Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated September 2026
Most gift guides sort by price alone, which produces lists where the same product is recommended to a partner and to a colleague at the same number. That is useless, because the same gift means different things to different people. This guide crosses the two axes that actually decide it - who the person is to you, and what you are spending - and gives one pick per cell, including the cells where the honest answer is to buy nothing.
SOSA Attar Trio gift box - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
SOSA Attar Trio · Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani from ₹1,055 →
The cell that fits the most rows on this grid. The Attar Trio, ₹1,055 for three 3ml bottles - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - works for a partner, a friend, a parent or a sibling in the ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 band, and is one band too high for a colleague. At the entry end of the same grid, a single 3ml attar from ₹379 is the one pick that suits every recipient here.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the best just-because gift under ₹500? A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 for almost anybody, or car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹499 for somebody who drives daily. Nothing below ₹379 is a standalone gift: car hanging refills at ₹399 to ₹429 only suit somebody who already owns the bottle, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is machine fuel, not a present.

How much should I spend on a gift with no occasion? Lower than you would for a birthday. ₹379 to ₹1,000 covers a partner, a friend, a sibling and a colleague comfortably. Above ₹2,000 there are only two recipients left who make sense - a partner or a parent - and only if the product genuinely fits their daily life.

What should I not buy a colleague? Anything above about ₹1,000, and anything worn. With no occasion attached, a large gift or a personal fragrance both put a colleague in the position of working out what it means. Car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 or a single reed at ₹749 is the top of that range.
The short answer
Short answer: Cross the recipient against the budget. Under Rs 500 it is a 3ml attar at Rs 379 or car fragrance at Rs 449. Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 is a 6ml attar or a 50ml reed at Rs 749. Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 is the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 or a reed duo at Rs 1,498. Above Rs 2,000, only a partner or a parent.
The pick: For the widest span of recipients: the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 upward, and a 3ml attar at ₹379 at the entry end.
Why: Those two cover most of the grid on their own, and the attar band is the only one that works for a partner, a friend, a sibling and a colleague without changing what the gift means.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
What should I buy as a no-occasion gift for each person and each budget?
Start with the budget, then check it against the recipient, because a number that is generous for a friend is loud for a colleague. Under ₹500 the answer is a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, or car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹499 for anybody who drives daily - and nothing below ₹379 is a standalone gift, so do not stretch to fill a lower band. Between ₹500 and ₹1,000 you get a 6ml attar at ₹669 to ₹699 for somebody whose scent you can name, a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 for somebody whose home you are buying for, or the car Discovery Set at ₹699 to ₹799 for a driver. Between ₹1,000 and ₹2,000 the picks are the Attar Trio at ₹1,055, a 130ml reed at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349, or a reed duo set at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 - and this band is already too large for most colleagues. Above ₹2,000 only two recipients remain sensible, a partner or a parent, and only for something that fits their actual day: SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for somebody who genuinely lives in their car, or Megh at ₹3,499 for a large household. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The budget tells you what you can buy. The recipient tells you what you are allowed to buy. Where those two disagree, the recipient wins.
The single cell that fits the most recipients: the Attar Trio at ₹1,055. Three characters in one box, right for a partner, a friend, a sibling or a parent - and one band too high for a colleague.
Attar Trio from ₹1,055

The two axes: who it is for, and what you are spending

Two axes, five recipients down one and four bands across the other. Read the band first to find out what exists at that price, then read the recipient to find out whether you are allowed to spend it.

1
The first axis
The four budget bands, and what genuinely exists in each
Under ₹500. A 3ml attar - Adaa ₹379, Ameeri ₹385, Mastani ₹389, Nawaab ₹399 - or car fragrance, Jasmine ₹449, Lavender and Sandalwood ₹479, Icy Mint ₹489, Lemon ₹499. That is the whole band. Car hanging refills at ₹399 to ₹429 are a top-up for somebody who already owns the bottle, and the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is fuel for an ultrasonic machine rather than a present.

₹500 to ₹1,000. A 6ml attar at ₹669 to ₹699, a 10ml alcohol-free perfume at ₹599, a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849, the car Discovery Set of three minis at ₹699 to ₹799, car saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949, the Boond ultrasonic at ₹899 or the body massage candle at ₹699.

₹1,000 to ₹2,000. The Attar Trio at ₹1,055, a 12ml attar at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, a 130ml reed at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349, the reed duo sets at ₹1,498, ₹1,548 and ₹1,598, a 50ml car spray at ₹1,499, or the Sukoon ultrasonic at ₹1,899.

Above ₹2,000. The Attar Trio in 6ml at ₹1,859 or 12ml at ₹3,189, 130ml reed duos at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598, reed refills at ₹2,399 and ₹3,499, Megh at ₹3,499, SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios, and SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999.
Tip: There is no meaningful band below ₹379. Say so rather than stretching a price to fill it.
2
The second axis
The five recipients, and how each one reads the gesture
A partner reads a no-occasion gift closely, because there is no date to hide behind, so size and register matter more than usual. Worn fragrance is fine here - it is one of the few relationships where an intimate format is not presumptuous - but keep it small unless you actually share a home.

A friend is the easiest recipient on the grid. Almost anything from ₹379 to ₹1,500 lands as intended, and this is the relationship where a reed diffuser works best, because you can buy for their flat without it meaning anything beyond that you have been in it.

A parent is the one recipient where spending more is genuinely easier, because the relationship already carries it. It is also the recipient most likely to drive daily and least likely to buy anything for themselves.

A sibling is the low-ceremony case: keep it cheap and specific, and lean towards the car, which is the space siblings notice and nobody buys for.

A colleague has the hardest ceiling. Above about ₹1,000 a no-occasion gift becomes something they have to think about, and anything worn is too personal by default. Car fragrance or a single reed is the top of it.
3
Where the axes cross
One pick per cell, including the cells to skip
Partner: under ₹500, a 3ml Mastani at ₹389 or Adaa at ₹379. ₹500 to ₹1,000, the 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699. ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 or a 12ml at ₹1,149. Above ₹2,000, SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 only if they genuinely drive long hours.

Friend: under ₹500, a 3ml Adaa at ₹379. ₹500 to ₹1,000, a 50ml Morning Freshness reed at ₹749. ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, a reed duo set from ₹1,498, which is the readymade version of this gift. Above ₹2,000, usually stop - past that point a no-occasion gift to a friend starts to need explaining.

Parent: under ₹500, Sandalwood car fragrance at ₹479. ₹500 to ₹1,000, a 50ml Garden Bloom reed at ₹799. ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, a 130ml reed at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 for a house that is lived in all day. Above ₹2,000, Megh at ₹3,499 for a large home or Safar at ₹3,999 for a daily driver.

Sibling: under ₹500, Jasmine car fragrance at ₹449. ₹500 to ₹1,000, the car Discovery Set at ₹699 to ₹799. ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, a car saver combo at ₹899 to ₹949 or a 50ml car spray at ₹1,499. Above ₹2,000, only Safar, and only for a real commute.

Colleague: under ₹500, a 3ml Adaa at ₹379, the least declarative of the four. ₹500 to ₹1,000, a 50ml Morning Freshness reed at ₹749 or car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549. ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 and above: skip both. The ceiling for a colleague with no occasion attached is the band below.
Tip: Two cells on this grid are deliberately empty, and leaving them empty is the advice.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
How to read the grid in four steps
  1. Pick the band first and see what genuinely exists in it. Below Rs 379, nothing does.
  2. Name the recipient and check the ceiling. A colleague stops at about Rs 1,000.
  3. Decide worn or room. Worn needs a name you can say; a room does not.
  4. Take the smaller size in the cell. A first bottle is never the biggest bottle.
The SOSA principle
A gift guide sorted only by price will recommend the same product to a partner and to a colleague, which is how people end up giving a colleague something that reads as a statement. Budget sets what you can buy; the relationship sets the ceiling.
Where the two disagree, the relationship wins, and the honest version of this guide has empty cells.

The grid, cell by cell, with one pick for each

Scent choice sits underneath the grid rather than beside it, and it only needs two rules. Rule one: for a person whose taste you can name, pick the attar that matches the thing you would say about them - Adaa at ₹379 for somebody who wears bright and green, Ameeri at ₹385 for rose and warmth, Mastani at ₹389 for evening florals, Nawaab at ₹399 for oud and formality. Rule two: for a person whose taste you cannot name, go quieter than you think - Morning Freshness at ₹749 among the reeds, Jasmine at ₹449 or Lemon at ₹499 among the car scents, and the mild hanging car format rather than the stronger spray at the same price. Every car scent comes in both, so the format is a free decision.

The SOSA gift edit
The four budget bands, read across all five recipients
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Under ₹500 · the entry band Partner: 3ml Adaa ₹379 or Mastani ₹389. Friend: 3ml Adaa ₹379. Parent: Sandalwood car fragrance ₹479. Sibling: Jasmine car fragrance ₹449. Colleague: 3ml Adaa ₹379. This band works for everybody on the grid, which is unusual and is the reason it is the default recommendation. Below ₹379 there is no standalone gift at all.
₹500 to ₹1,000 · the comfortable band Partner: 6ml attar ₹669 to ₹699. Friend: 50ml Morning Freshness reed ₹749. Parent: 50ml Garden Bloom reed ₹799. Sibling: car Discovery Set ₹699 to ₹799. Colleague: 50ml reed ₹749 or car fragrance ₹449 to ₹549, and this is the colleague ceiling. Most no-occasion gifts should land in this band or the one below it.
₹1,000 to ₹2,000 · the considered band Partner: Attar Trio ₹1,055 or a 12ml attar ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. Friend: reed duo set ₹1,498 to ₹1,598. Parent: 130ml reed ₹1,249 to ₹1,349. Sibling: car combo ₹899 to ₹949 or 50ml car spray ₹1,499. Colleague: skip. At this size a gift with no occasion starts asking the recipient what it is for.
Above ₹2,000 · the narrow band Partner: SOSA Safar ₹3,999, and only for somebody who genuinely drives long hours. Parent: Megh ₹3,499 for a large household, or Safar ₹3,999. Sibling: Safar, same condition. Friend and colleague: skip. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 belongs to a large open home or a business owner and is not a Tuesday gift for anybody.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

One structural note on the expensive end, because it is where these guides usually go wrong. The machines are real products and they are good ones, but they are not no-occasion gifts by default: Safar at ₹3,999 is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion car and travel perfume diffuser, and it only makes sense for somebody who spends real hours driving. Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer, which suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with the doors shut. And all three fluids stay separate: reed oil for the reeds, the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 for the Boond, Sukoon and Megh ultrasonics, and waterless nebuliser oil at ₹1,049 or ₹1,849 for Vaayu and Safar.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

A price band tells you what you can afford. The relationship tells you what you are allowed to spend. I have watched far more gifts go wrong on the second number than on the first.

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best no-occasion gift under Rs 500?
A 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, which suits every recipient on this grid, or car fragrance at Rs 449 to Rs 499 for somebody who drives daily. Below Rs 379 there is no standalone gift: refills at Rs 399 to Rs 429 need an existing bottle and the Rs 299 Hotel Collection is machine fuel.
How much is too much for a gift with no occasion?
It depends on the recipient more than the number. For a colleague, about Rs 1,000 is the ceiling. For a friend, Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000. For a partner or a parent there is no fixed ceiling, but above Rs 2,000 the product has to genuinely fit their daily life rather than simply cost more.
What should I buy a colleague for no reason?
Car fragrance at Rs 449 to Rs 549 if they drive, or a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749. Keep it under about Rs 1,000 and keep it out of worn fragrance, because a perfume or attar for a colleague is a personal judgement that a workplace relationship does not usually carry.
Which gift works for the widest range of people?
The 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 at the low end and the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 at the higher end. Between them they cover a partner, a friend, a parent and a sibling, and the 3ml also works for a colleague, which the Trio does not.
Is a diffuser machine a sensible no-occasion gift?
Rarely. SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 makes sense for somebody who spends real hours driving, and Megh at Rs 3,499 or Vaayu at Rs 11,999 suit a large home or a business owner. For everybody else a machine is a big object with no occasion attached to explain it.

Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent and does not remove, neutralise or purify odour, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial, air-purifying or wellbeing claim. No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by.
