Founder Diaries · Home Scenting by Home Type
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
A 4BHK is really two homes sharing a front door. There is the half that other people see — entrance, living, dining — and the half that only your household ever enters. Those two halves are scented for different audiences, and everything follows from that: a different fragrance character, a lower dose, a different time of day, and a different order of buying. Treating a large flat as one thing with five machines in it is how you end up with a bedroom that smells like a reception desk.
Quick answers — read this first
Common areas: two Sukoons at opposite ends, one house scent, four to five drops, running before and during the evening. ₹3,798.

Bedroom wing: one Sukoon per used bedroom, a quieter scent, three to four drops, one hour before the room is used. ₹5,697 for three.

The corridor between them: nothing. It is the seam, not a zone.
The short answer
Short answer: Split the flat in two. Two Sukoons and one house scent across the connected common areas — ₹3,798 — and one Sukoon per used bedroom with a quieter scent at a lower dose — ₹5,697 for three. ₹9,495 for the whole plan.
The difference that matters: Common areas are scented for arrival and for other people; bedrooms are scented for the person who sleeps in them. That means a warmer, more legible fragrance in front and a cleaner, quieter one behind, at fewer drops.
Buy in this order: Common areas first, both machines together, because that is the half that is judged and the half where under-buying shows. Bedrooms second, one at a time if you like.
Straight answer
How should you split scenting between common areas and bedrooms in a 4BHK?
1. Common areas: two machines, one scent, generous. Entrance, living and dining usually share air in a 4BHK, so they take one fragrance across two Sukoons placed at opposite ends — ₹3,798. Four to five drops per tank. This is the half of the flat that has an audience, and it should be confident.

2. Bedrooms: one machine each, one quieter scent, restrained. Every bedroom in daily use gets its own Sukoon, all running the same calmer fragrance at three to four drops. Three bedrooms is ₹5,697. Behind a closed door a small dose goes a long way, and you are lying still in it for eight hours.

3. Two scents, not five. One house scent in front and one bedroom scent behind is the entire fragrance plan. Different fragrances in each of four bedrooms produces a landing where three of them meet, which is nobody's idea of a plan.

4. Different schedules, not just different scents. Common areas run from before people arrive through the evening. Bedrooms run for the hour before the room is used and stop on the 2H timer. Running both halves on the same schedule is what makes a big flat feel institutional.

5. The corridor between them stays empty. The passage joining the two halves is a seam, not a zone. It will always smell faintly of both and that is correct — it is the transition. A machine placed there scents nobody and dilutes both halves.

TL;DR: scent a 4BHK as two zones. Common areas: two Sukoons, one warm house scent, four to five drops, evening schedule — ₹3,798. Bedrooms: one Sukoon each, a quieter scent, three to four drops, an hour before use — ₹5,697 for three. Nothing in the corridor.

270–320 sq ft covers a bedroom outright and half a large open common area, and the steady / 2H / 4H timers are what let the two halves of the flat run on different schedules from the same hardware. Ships with three 15ml Hotel Collection scents, so a zoned five-machine plan starts with fifteen bottles.

Two halves with two different jobs

The common areas of a home are performed and the bedrooms are inhabited, and once you notice that, most fragrance decisions in a large flat answer themselves. A performed space is experienced by people arriving into it — guests, family coming home, the courier at the door — and what matters there is the first thirty seconds. It wants a fragrance that is legible on entry, warm enough to read as hospitality rather than as air freshening, and strong enough to survive a room with a door opening onto a corridor and a kitchen. An inhabited space is the opposite. Nobody arrives into a bedroom; you go there to stop. The fragrance has to be pleasant at the tenth hour as well as the first minute, which means it must be quiet enough to disappear — and a scent that disappears well is a very different composition from one that announces itself well.

The second thing that follows is that the two halves should not be on the same schedule or the same dose, which is where most zoned plans quietly fail. People split the scents correctly and then run all five machines from seven until midnight at five drops each, and the flat behaves as one over-scented block again. The common areas want to be building as people arrive and finished by the time the household goes to bed. The bedrooms want an hour before use and then nothing — a bedroom is best scented before you enter it, not while you sleep in it. Getting those two rhythms right is what makes a 4BHK feel like a house that has been considered rather than a house with a lot of diffusers in it, and it costs nothing at all beyond a little attention to the timers you already have.

The three decisions in a zoned plan

1
DECISION ONE · THE COMMON AREAS BRIEF
Legible on arrival, and one scent across the whole zone
SOSA Sukoon diffuserSOSA Sukoon₹1,899Entrance, living and dining are almost always one body of air in a 4BHK, so they take one fragrance across two Sukoons at opposite ends — ₹3,798, four to five drops each, identical doses. Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome is the most reliable choice here: citrus, floral and sandalwood, warm and readable at the door. W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar if the room is formal and hard-surfaced; The St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour if you want composure rather than welcome. Run it from before people arrive, not after.
Zone cost: ₹3,798 for two machines, or ₹1,899 if the living room is a defined space under 350 sq ft.
2
DECISION TWO · THE BEDROOM WING BRIEF
Quiet, consistent, and the same behind every door
Every bedroom in daily use takes its own Sukoon — three is ₹5,697 — and they all run the same scent at three to four drops. Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity is the archetype: white tea, aloe and cedar, cool and undemanding. The Ritz-Carlton-inspired Quiet Luxury is the more polished option for a master you want to feel hotel-like; 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite suits a bedroom that doubles as a workroom. What matters more than the choice is the consistency: four doors off one landing running four different fragrances turns the landing into a muddle nobody designed.
Zone cost: ₹5,697 for three bedrooms, ₹7,596 for four — or ₹899 for a Boond in a room barely used.
3
DECISION THREE · WHAT HAPPENS AT THE BOUNDARY
The corridor is a seam, not a zone
Between the two halves is a passage, and it is the one part of a 4BHK that should be left alone. It has doorways on both sides and constant air movement, so it borrows from whichever rooms are open rather than supplying anything, and a machine placed there dilutes both zones while scenting nobody. Design the boundary instead: choose two fragrances from related families so that where they meet they blur rather than clash, keep bedroom doors shut while the common areas run, and accept that the corridor will always be the faintest part of the flat. That is what a transition is supposed to feel like.

The zoned plan

The whole plan on one page, for a 4BHK of roughly 1,800–2,500 sq ft with three bedrooms in daily use. Two fragrances, two doses, two schedules. Adjust the bedroom rows to your household — the structure holds whether you have two occupied bedrooms or four.

Master bedroom ★ Disappear well over eight hours One Sukoon · ₹1,899 Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity · 3–4 drops · one hour before use, 2H timer
Two more bedrooms The same, consistently One Sukoon each · ₹3,798 The same bedroom scent and dose
Study or fourth room Focus, or nothing at all Boond ₹899, or nothing 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite · 2–3 drops · while the room is in use

What the two zones are built from
The SOSA principle
Common areas are performed; bedrooms are inhabited. One wants to be noticed on entry, the other wants to be forgotten by hour three.
That single distinction sets the scent, the dose, the schedule and the order in which you buy the machines.

Doses and schedules, zone by zone

Common areas first. Four to five drops of Hotel Collection per tank, the same in both machines, refilled from the same bottle on the same evening so the two ends of the zone never drift apart. Both machines a metre off the floor, at opposite ends of the connected space, out of the throw of the fan or AC. Start them before the room is occupied — half an hour before guests, or when you get home rather than when you sit down — and let them finish by the time the household goes to bed. A common area still running at one in the morning is fragrance spent on an empty room.

Bedrooms second, and lighter in every respect. Three to four drops, one scent across all of them, machines on a chest or dresser two to three feet from the bedhead rather than on the bedside table. The 2H timer rather than overnight running: the aim is to walk into a room that already smells right, not to sleep inside a working machine. Keep the door shut while it runs, which is what makes a small dose effective behind a door and also stops the bedroom filling with whatever the common areas are doing.

Then the boundary, which needs one decision and no equipment. Choose your two scents from families that sit together — a citrus-sandalwood house scent in front of a white-tea-and-cedar bedroom scent, say — so the corridor between them blurs rather than jars. Leave the corridor itself unscented. If you want to change things seasonally, change the house scent and leave the bedroom scent alone; the front half of a home can take variety and the back half is better for being constant. Use filtered water in hard-water cities, rinse tanks when you switch scent, and never put raw essential or carrier oils into an ultrasonic machine.

The front of a home should introduce itself. The back of it should say nothing at all after the first minute.

What each zone costs

The plan priced by zone rather than as one number, because that is how most people buy it — the common areas now, the bedrooms over the following months. Each Sukoon includes three 15ml fragrances of your choice.

The zoned budget
Five ways to build the plan, with the real totals
Zone or stage What you buy Covers Total
Common areas ★ Two Sukoons ₹1,899 × 2 — 6 × 15ml scents Entrance, living and dining ₹3,798
Bedroom wing ★ Three Sukoons ₹1,899 × 3 — 9 × 15ml scents Three bedrooms in daily use ₹5,697
Both zones Five Sukoons ₹1,899 × 5 The whole flat, zoned ₹9,495
All four bedrooms Six Sukoons ₹1,899 × 6 Common areas + four bedrooms ₹11,394
Two scents to supply it Two 100ml refills ₹999 × 2, or a 300ml ₹1,799 for the house scent One fragrance per zone, months of running from ₹1,998
Honest notes before you buy: buying the common areas first is the right order — it is the half that is judged and the half where under-buying shows. These are ultrasonic, water-based fragrances, so they add a little humidity, welcome in a dry or air-conditioned flat and less so in a coastal monsoon. The machines (Boond, Sukoon, Megh) are imported from China; the Hotel Collection fragrances are composed and made in India. A Megh at ₹3,499 does not belong in either zone as a coverage choice — it covers 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon. The Vaayu (₹11,999) and Aangan (₹25,999) are waterless, run neat oil and cannot take the water-based Hotel Collection at all; a Vaayu can only ever serve the common-areas half, and never the bedrooms. Use filtered water in hard-water areas, rinse tanks between scents, and keep fragrance away from children and pets. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air scent diffuser
A common-areas machine only
SOSA Vaayu · waterless ₹11,999
If the common areas are one very large connected volume, the Vaayu is built for exactly that half of the flat — and for no part of the other half, because it cannot cross a closed bedroom door. It is waterless, runs neat oil and cannot use the water-based Hotel Collection at all, so a Vaayu plan means two fragrance systems in one home.

A note from Sonal

The most useful thing I ever learned about scenting a large home came from hotels, and it is not about fragrance at all. It is that a building has a front of house and a back of house, and they are designed by different rules. A home is the same. Your living room is front of house whether you think of it that way or not.

What that means in practice is that the two halves of a 4BHK should not be sized, dosed or timed alike. In front you are composing a first impression, and the fragrance can afford to be warm and confident because people meet it briefly. Behind the doors you are composing something a person will lie down inside for eight hours, and the whole skill is making it disappear. I have watched people spend a great deal on a big flat and then run the same scent at the same strength everywhere, which throws away the only real advantage a large home has.

So: two Sukoons in front at ₹3,798, three behind at ₹5,697, two fragrances, two schedules, nothing in the corridor. Buy the front half first. A portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should common areas and bedrooms smell different in a 4BHK?
Yes — two scents is the right number for a flat this size. The common areas want something warm and legible on arrival, such as Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome, at four to five drops. The bedrooms want something quieter that disappears over a night, such as Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity, at three to four drops. Use one scent across all the bedrooms rather than a different one per room.
How many diffusers do the common areas of a 4BHK need?
Two if the entrance, living and dining run together as a single 600–800 sq ft volume — two Sukoons at opposite ends, ₹3,798. One if the living room is a defined space under about 350 sq ft. A single machine in the middle of a large open zone leaves both ends faint.
Which zone should I buy first?
The common areas, and both machines together. It is the half of the flat other people experience, the half where under-buying is visible, and the half that sets the character of the home. The bedrooms can follow one at a time — each Sukoon at ₹1,899 is a self-contained purchase with three 15ml fragrances included.
Should the corridor between the two zones have a diffuser?
No. It is a transition with doorways on both sides and constant air movement, so it takes fragrance from whichever rooms are open rather than supplying them. Left alone it smells faintly of both halves, which is exactly what a boundary should do. A machine there scents nobody and weakens both zones.
Can a Vaayu handle the common areas while Sukoons do the bedrooms?
It can, if the common areas are one very large connected volume — but understand what it commits you to. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is waterless, runs neat oil and cannot use the water-based Hotel Collection, so the two halves of your home would run two separate fragrance systems. With four Sukoons behind it, that plan is ₹19,595 of hardware.
