It can, and the way to get there is to treat the building's materials as the first three notes of the composition rather than as a backdrop to it.
Quick answers — read this first
Can a signature scent work alongside stone, wood and traditional interiors? Yes, if it is chosen to sit with what the materials already contribute. Sandstone and lime plaster give a dry mineral character, old wood gives resin and dust, and textiles hold whatever has been in the room, so a dry register generally sits better than a sweet one.
Which registers fight a heritage interior? Sweet, gourmand and heavy floral registers, because they have nothing in common with the materials and therefore read as applied rather than belonging. The same is true of anything strongly synthetic and marine.
Do textiles change the decision? Yes. Carpets, drapes and upholstery absorb and slowly re-release ambient odour, so a heavily furnished room reaches a given perceived level at a lower machine setting and holds it longer. Set lower in those rooms, on a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: Treat the materials as the opening notes. Dry, mineral and woody registers belong; sweet and gourmand ones sit on top and read as applied.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for one fully enclosed public room up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume, the Aangan at ₹25,999 for a large enclosed hall, on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299. Semi-open areas are specified as nothing at all.

Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
How should a signature scent be chosen so that it complements old stone, wood and traditional interiors?
By choosing it against the materials in the room rather than against a mood board. An old Jaipur property is already contributing a set of notes, and they are quite specific. Sandstone and lime plaster give a dry, mineral, faintly chalky character, strongest in the cool of early morning. Old wood gives resin, a little dust and sometimes a trace of oil or polish. Courtyards bring in earth after watering, whatever is planted, and outside air. Textiles - carpets, heavy drapes, upholstery - absorb ambient odour and release it slowly, which makes a furnished room behave differently from a bare one. Registers that belong in that company are dry and structural: cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, tea, fig leaf, dry citrus, a restrained incense. They share a vocabulary with the building and read as though they came with it. Registers that fight are sweet, gourmand, heavy white floral and strongly synthetic marine accords, not because they are poor fragrances but because they have nothing in common with stone and wood, so the nose files them as something added. The textile adjustment is practical: a room with carpet and heavy drapes reaches a given perceived intensity at a lower machine setting than a bare stone room of the same volume, and it holds it for longer after the machine stops, so heavily furnished rooms are set lower rather than the same.Specification: a SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 per enclosed room on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, set from the doorway and locked. One line: dry, mineral and woody belong with stone. Sweet and gourmand sit on top of it.

What the materials themselves contribute
This is the one decision in the cluster where the fragrance itself genuinely matters, so it is worth being concrete about materials.
Why this works
Choosing against the materials
The machine most Jaipur heritage properties use, and only in their enclosed rooms: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38 dB, app and timer control, key-locked so the level cannot drift. Fragrance from ₹299.
Sandstone, marble and lime plaster give a cool, dry, slightly chalky character that is most noticeable early in the morning and after rain. It is a genuinely attractive base and it pairs naturally with dry woods and green notes, which is why cedar and vetiver feel native in these buildings. A sweet accord over the same base tends to separate rather than blend, and guests experience that separation as an air freshener.
Tip: Cedar and vetiver sound like the building. Vanilla sounds like a product.
02
Wood and polish
Already halfway to a fragrance
Old doors, beams, shutters and furniture give resin, dry dust and sometimes polish or oil, which is a substantial contribution that most owners never account for. In a room with a great deal of old wood the machine has less work to do than the square footage suggests, and the correct response is to set lower and let the wood carry the character rather than to cover it with something louder.
03
Textiles
They store the room's smell and give it back
Carpets, drapes, upholstery and cushions absorb ambient odour and re-release it slowly, so a furnished room both reaches a perceived level at a lower setting and holds it long after the machine has stopped. This cuts both ways: it makes low settings effective, and it means a mistake takes weeks rather than hours to leave. Which is one more reason to set low, lock it, and change registers rarely.
Tip: A mistake in a carpeted room takes weeks to leave, not hours.
The SOSA principle
The building has already written the first three notes. You are choosing the fourth.
Which is a much easier brief than starting from a blank page.

Choosing against the building, not against a mood board
If you want a single default that rarely goes wrong in these properties, a dry woody-green register at a low setting is the one that survives longest and annoys fewest people.

The SOSA commercial range
Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

Honest notes for heritage properties: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning, damp remediation or source control. On an old building the correct first step is to identify what each area already smells of and to protect or repair that; a scent laid over damp, drains or deteriorating textiles is a cover-up and is not recommended. Fragrance introduced into a semi-open or outdoor volume is carried away by air that does not stay in the space, so it is spent rather than used. This is a physical limit and not a machine limit: no output setting makes an open courtyard hold a scent. Guest preference is personal and a hotel is a crowd environment, so restrained registers are recommended and unscented areas should be available. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases bookings, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or guest spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where memory or association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it felt - and is not a commercial performance claim, nor a claim about mood, sleep, stress, calm or any other therapeutic effect. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. A note from Sonal
Jaipur is the one city where my first answer is often that the property needs less than the owner thinks. A haveli or a palace hotel arrives with a smell it has earned - old stone that holds cool, wood, lime plaster, the courtyard after it has been watered, whatever grows in it. Guests are paying for exactly that, and it is very easy to spend eleven thousand rupees covering it up.
So the sequence I use here is backwards from everywhere else. Walk the property at seven in the morning and write down what each area already smells of. Protect the ones that are lovely. Fix the ones that are not, at the source, because damp and drains and old textiles are not a fragrance problem. Only then look at the two or three fully enclosed rooms where a low background would genuinely help, which is usually reception and an indoor lounge, and almost never a corridor open to a courtyard.
The honest limits. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. SOSA is not affiliated with any hotel brand, and I make no claim about bookings, reviews or guest spend. If you run a heritage property in Jaipur and want to know which rooms are worth scenting and which are not, WhatsApp me on +91 96192 18531. Frequently asked questions
Can a signature scent work with stone, wood and traditional interiors?
Yes, if chosen against the materials. Dry, mineral and woody registers share a vocabulary with sandstone, lime plaster and old wood, so they read as belonging.
Which registers tend to fight a heritage interior?
Sweet, gourmand, heavy white floral and strongly synthetic marine accords, because they have nothing in common with the materials and register as something applied.
Do carpets and drapes change the setting?
Yes. Textiles absorb and slowly re-release ambient odour, so heavily furnished rooms reach a given level at a lower setting and hold it far longer.
Does a room full of old wood need less?
Usually yes. Old wood already contributes resin and dust, so the machine has less to do than the floor area suggests and a lower setting is appropriate.
How do I trial a register safely?
Run one enclosed room at a low setting for a fortnight before committing across the property, and keep a written note of the setting. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
