By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated September 2026
Most mentor-gift lists are organised by price, rising. That is exactly the wrong direction. The person you are thanking is usually senior to you, often paid more than you, and entirely capable of buying whatever you were about to buy — which changes what a gift from you can usefully be.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the best gift for a mentor? Something small, specific, and paired with words. Your mentor is usually more senior and better paid than you are, so an expensive gift does not read as generous — it reads as an attempt to settle an account that cannot be settled that way. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749, or a 3ml attar at ₹379, is the right size of object. The part that carries the gift is a written note naming the actual advice they gave and what you did with it. That is the thing they cannot buy for themselves.

Is an expensive gift a bad idea for a mentor? Usually, yes. Where a gift is obviously costly, the person receiving it has to work out what it is for, and senior people are practised at reading that question. Many employers also set written limits on what staff may accept, and a large present from a junior colleague, a client or a founder can put somebody in an awkward position at work. Keep the object below the level where it becomes a topic. ₹749 to ₹1,498 covers almost every honest mentor gift, and a great many good ones sit well below that.

What can I give a mentor that is not an object at all? Three things, and all of them outrank most objects. A written account of one decision you took differently because of them, with what came of it — concrete, dated, not flattering. A public credit, said where people whose opinion matters to them can hear it, or written somewhere their name is searchable. And an introduction that is useful to them rather than to you. None of those costs anything, and none of them can be bought by someone already senior and comfortable. Send a small object afterwards if you still want to.
The short answer
Short answer: Small, specific, and paired with words. A mentor is usually senior to you and can buy the object, so an expensive gift reads as an attempt to buy goodwill rather than as thanks. A 50ml reed at ₹749 or a 3ml attar at ₹379 is the right size of thing. The written account of what their advice changed is the actual gift, and it costs nothing.
The pick: SOSA Morning Freshness at ₹749 for 50ml, or SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml where you know their taste and it runs light.
Next step: Tell us how you know them, whether the relationship is still commercial, and what you want to spend. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
Small, specific, and paired with wordsYour mentor can buy the object themselvesThey cannot buy your account of what changedCostly reads as an attempt, not as thanksA room gift is easier to accept than a worn oneCheck your employer's gift policy first
Every line points the same way: spend less on the thing, and spend the time you saved writing down what actually changed.
Straight answer
What should you actually give a mentor, and why is small the right answer?
Start from an uncomfortable fact: your mentor is almost certainly more senior and better paid than you are. That single asymmetry decides most of this. In an ordinary gift, cost works as a rough proxy for care, and spending more reads as caring more. Between a junior person and a senior one it inverts. A visibly expensive present from somebody the recipient has been helping does not read as generosity — it reads as an attempt to balance a ledger, and senior people are practised at spotting that. So the object goes small and the words do the work. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749, a 3ml attar at ₹379, a 130ml reed at ₹1,249 where the relationship has run for years: that band is where a mentor gift sits comfortably, and going above it buys you nothing. Then ask whether the relationship is still live and commercial. If they invest in your company, sit on your board, employ you, buy from you, or could be asked to hire you next year, the gift has to be small enough that nobody in either organisation would have to think about it twice. Many employers publish a limit on what their staff may accept, and five minutes of checking before you buy saves a gift being handed back. Then decide room or person. A reed diffuser sits on a shelf in an office or a study, needs no power and nothing switched on, and assumes nothing about what somebody wears. A worn fragrance is personal, and choosing one presumes a knowledge of their taste you may not have. When you are unsure, give the room. Then write the thing that is actually the gift. Not a card that says thank you for everything. A specific account: the advice they gave, roughly when, what you did with it, and what happened next. That is the one item on this list a person with money cannot buy, and it is why a ₹749 reed with a real letter beats something four times the price without one. If you want a second opinion before you buy, ask us to help choose a gift.
Small object, specific words. A mentor can buy anything you were going to buy; the account of what their advice changed is the part they cannot.
The one I suggest most often is SOSA Morning Freshness at ₹749 — Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Passive, nothing to switch on, and small enough that nobody has to work out what it is for.

What to actually buy, by budget

One sizing note before the cards. There is nothing in the SOSA range under ₹300, and the 15ml bottles at ₹299 are refills for an ultrasonic machine rather than gifts. Above that line, size by the relationship rather than by gratitude: a 50ml reed suits a desk or a small cabin, 130ml suits a home, and a duo belongs to a mentorship measured in years.

SOSA Attar Trio
When you do not
SOSA Attar Trio

SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
The one that fits a senior person's desk
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus reed diffuser in 50ml (₹749) and 130ml (₹1,249). Passive - no power, no noise, nothing to switch on. Clean and ungendered, and the hardest scent in the range to dislike.

Three things that decide it

Three things to settle, in the order they actually matter.

1
First, the asymmetry
You cannot out-spend a mentor, so do not try
The whole family of mistakes here begins with treating a mentor gift like a wedding present. Cost signals care in most gifting, and between people of roughly equal standing that is broadly true. Reverse the seniority and it stops working. A senior person receiving something conspicuous from somebody they have been advising has to decide what it is for, and the decision is not a comfortable one. They may also be constrained: plenty of organisations require staff to declare or refuse gifts above a stated value, and a present that has to be logged is a present that has become admin. Small removes every one of those problems at once. A ₹749 reed or a ₹379 attar is unmistakably a thank-you and nothing else, and it leaves the relationship exactly where it was.
Tip: If your instinct says the gift looks too cheap, that instinct is calibrated for peers. Spend the difference on writing a better letter instead.
2
Second, room or person
A reed sits on a shelf. A worn fragrance sits on them
A worn fragrance is a personal object. It goes on skin, it is entirely a matter of taste, and choosing one for somebody else assumes a degree of knowledge about them that a professional relationship may never have given you. It also raises a question you cannot answer from outside, because fragrance sensitivity is real and some people simply do not wear scent. A room fragrance sidesteps all of it. A reed diffuser needs no power, makes no noise, and can be put on a desk, taken home, or quietly moved to another room without anybody having a conversation about it. That is not the lesser option. For most mentor relationships it is the appropriate one, and it is what I suggest whenever somebody tells me they are not sure.

3
Third, the words
Write the specific thing, not the general thing
Most thank-you notes to mentors say some version of thank you for all your guidance, which is warm and tells the reader nothing. The version worth writing names one piece of advice, roughly when it was given, what you did with it, and what happened. If you can manage two, write two. The reason this matters is not sentiment, it is scarcity: people who advise others rarely find out what came of it, because nobody circles back. You are in a position to close that loop and almost nobody does. Write it by hand if the relationship is personal and by email if it is not, and put it in the box with the object rather than sending it separately.
Tip: Name what you did, not what they are. An account of a decision reads better than a paragraph of adjectives about them.
The SOSA principle
A mentor can buy the object. Nobody can buy a specific, dated account of what their advice changed in somebody else's working life.
That is an observation about what is scarce, and we make no claim that any gift alters what a mentor thinks of the person who gave it.
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
The one to buy if you read nothing else: Morning Freshness — Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Passive, clean, ungendered. From ₹749.

Choosing the register

The same reasoning as a short decision list, worth reading against your own situation before you buy anything.

The SOSA plan
Choosing a mentor gift, in order
The question What it decides
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed DiffuserHow senior are they, relative to you?
The ceiling. The bigger the gap, the smaller the object should be, and the more the words have to carry.
Is anything commercial still live?
Whether an object is appropriate at all. Where money moves between you, keep it token or make it words only.
Room, or person?
A reed for a desk or a study when you are unsure; an attar only where you genuinely know their taste.
What did their advice actually change?
The content of the note, which is the real gift. If you cannot answer this, the object will not rescue it.

The business-mentor version of this question, where money is still moving between you, is handled in gift for a business mentor, and the awkwardness question has a page of its own in how to thank a mentor without making it awkward. SOSA is an independent Indian brand; nothing here is affiliated with any perfume house, designer or employer.

SOSA Adaa Attar
The smallest gift that still counts as one: Adaa, 3ml at ₹379. Bergamot, cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac. Light, and the only one of the four with no oudh.
Size it down, then write it properly
A reed diffuser from ₹749, an attar from ₹379, and a letter that costs nothing and outranks both
See the SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser Book a scenting plan
The mentor gift people regret is almost never the small one. It is the one that was large enough to need explaining, from someone who had nothing to explain.

SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser Around ₹749 to ₹849 A 50ml reed diffuser. The default. Fits a desk, needs no power, and carries no implication about the person. ₹749

SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser Around ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 A 130ml reed, for a home rather than an office, and for a mentorship that has run several years. ₹749

SOSA Day & Night Reed Duo Around ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 A reed duo — two bottles in one box. Only where the relationship is long, personal and no longer commercially live. ₹1,498

Two limits worth stating plainly. There is nothing in our range under ₹300, so if that is the budget the honest answer is a letter and nothing else, which is a real gift rather than a consolation. And many employers have written rules about gifts to and from staff, clients and advisors — check what yours allows before you buy, because a gift handed back is worse than no gift. We make no promise about delivery timing, gift wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal

I get asked about mentor gifts more than almost any other kind, and the question nearly always arrives the same way: what can I give somebody who has done a lot for me and clearly does not need anything. The instinct behind it is generous and the conclusion people draw from it is usually wrong. They decide the answer must be something impressive, and then they spend upward until the gift is large enough to feel proportionate to what they owe.

The trouble is that the gap they are trying to close is not a gap money crosses. Someone senior enough to mentor you is someone whose shopping is already solved. What is not solved, for almost anybody who advises others, is knowing what came of it. People give advice and then the person disappears into their own career and never reports back. You can report back. That takes an evening and no money at all, and there is nothing in any catalogue that competes with it.

So my advice is to buy something small and write something long. This is an ambience decision and not a claim of any kind — nothing therapeutic, nothing medical, and nothing about how a gift makes anyone feel, because what a gift means belongs to the person who receives it. No product here masks or covers a smell in a room, and the person whose desk or home it lands on decides where it goes and whether they use it. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gift for a mentor?
Something small, specific and paired with words. A mentor is usually senior to you and can buy the object, so a costly gift reads as an attempt to settle an account rather than as thanks. A 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 or a 3ml attar at Rs 379 is the right size. The written account of what their advice changed is the part that carries it.
How much should I spend on a mentor?
Less than you think, and the number matters far less than the fit. Rs 749 to Rs 1,498 covers almost every honest mentor gift and plenty sit below it. Spending more does not read as more grateful when the person is senior to you; it reads as something they now have to interpret, and possibly declare at work.
Should I give a mentor perfume?
Only where you genuinely know their taste and the relationship is personal rather than purely professional. A worn fragrance goes on skin and assumes knowledge of somebody you may only see across a table. A room gift avoids the question, including the question of fragrance sensitivity. Where you do want a worn gift, a 3ml attar at Rs 379 is a small, unfussy way to do it.
Is it better to give nothing and just write?
Often, yes, and it is never the worse option. A specific written account of what their advice changed is the scarcest thing you can hand a mentor, and it stands perfectly well on its own. The object is useful mainly as something for the note to arrive with, which is why a small one does the job as well as a large one.
Do I need to check anything before buying?
Yes. Many employers set written limits on what staff may accept, and the rules are usually stricter where a client, supplier, investor or recruiter is involved. A two-minute check of your own policy and, where you can, theirs, avoids the one outcome worse than an awkward gift, which is a gift that has to be returned.
SOSA Attar Trio
When you want to give something worn but cannot guess: The Attar Trio, ₹1,055 for three 3ml bottles. It hands the choosing back to them.
Buy small, then write properly
SOSA — Clinic Scenting for mentors, advisors and the seniors who steered your career
A 3ml attar from ₹379 where you know their taste. A 50ml reed from ₹749 where you do not, which is the default. The attar trio at ₹1,055 when you want to hand the choosing back to them. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
